You want to read more books, but work keeps you busy. You have books waiting on your shelf, yet somehow you never find the time — or the energy — to open them.Have you ever felt this way?In Episode 49 of Kokorozashi Radio, we launch a new series: “The Kokorozashi of Books and Language.”Starting with the question raised by the Japanese book Why Can’t We Read Books When We’re Working?, we explore the relationship between work, reading, and the mental space we need to think for ourselves. Is the problem simply a lack of time?Work can occupy more than our schedules. It can also consume our attention and become the center of our lives. When we are exhausted, we may gravitate toward information that is immediately useful, quick answers, and easily digestible content — leaving less room for long texts, unfamiliar ideas, and questions without simple answers. But reading is about more than gathering information. It can introduce us to perspectives we never expected to encounter. It can challenge assumptions we have taken for granted and expand the way we understand the world. In this episode, we also discuss Tools for Conviviality by Ivan Illich, a book that had a significant impact on Tanaka’s life and thinking.Drawing on his experience in social welfare and care, Tanaka reflects on what happens when people become too dependent on institutions, systems, and professional frameworks — and when tools designed to support human life begin to shape the way people live instead.Smartphones and AI can expand our possibilities. But as these tools become more convenient, how do we ensure that we do not give up our own ability to think, choose, and make decisions? We also explore the importance of having multiple roles and places to belong — through family, community, hobbies, learning, and work — rather than placing our entire identity and sense of purpose in a single job.Reading should not end when we close the book.We can reflect on three simple questions:What is the author trying to say? What reasons or evidence support that argument? What do I think about it in my own words? This process helps turn what we read into something we can genuinely understand and apply to our lives. We also discuss reading and learning among children. Rather than focusing only on how many books they finish, we consider the value of giving them time to pause over unfamiliar words, exchange thoughts with others, and discover books whose importance they may not recognize until years later. The episode also introduces Life Story Books, which document the lives of older people in the local community. Their stories remind us that meaningful lessons can come not only from famous historical figures, but also from the people living around us.

AIWhen we hear about AI, we often think of Tokyo, major corporations, or global technology companies. But what about rural communities?Labor shortages, aging populations, transportation challenges, healthcare access, disaster preparedness, agriculture, and the growing burden on local governments are already serious issues in many parts of Japan. That is why rural communities may have an especially important reason to use AI.In Episode 46 of Kokorozashi Radio, we continue the series “The Kokorozashi of AI and Humanity” with the theme:“Why Rural Communities Need AI.”The purpose of using AI in local communities should not simply be greater efficiency or maximum profit. It can also be about:Protecting essential services with limited human resources.Keeping people safe during disasters.Supporting older people and those with limited mobility.Helping local industries and traditions reach the next generation. We explore how AI could be used in areas such as:Disaster prevention and evacuation supportHealthcare and elderly careLocal transportation and autonomous drivingAgriculture and fisheriesTourism and regional dataSmall and medium-sized businessesLocal government services and applicationsProtecting personal and regional dataBut there is another important question:What happens to human relationships when AI makes everything more efficient?Neighborhood watch programs, PTA activities, festivals, community meetings, and simply taking the time to listen to someone may look inefficient from a purely economic perspective. But these activities can create trust, connection, safety, and culture. So perhaps AI should not be used to eliminate these “inefficient” parts of community life.Instead, it could be used to reduce the burden of the work around them so that people have more time to connect with one another. For example, AI could help organize documents and contact lists, while people protect the time they spend meeting face-to-face.We also discuss why local communities should not simply depend on technology brought in from outside.People who understand the local culture, economy, challenges, and everyday life need to learn how to use AI themselves. The goal is not simply to “introduce AI.”The first question should be:Whose problem are we trying to solve, and what do we want to change?Starting small, measuring the results, listening to residents and frontline workers, and improving the system over time may be more important than purchasing a large AI system all at once.AI does not have to make rural communities look like big cities. It can help rural communities remain themselves while facing the challenges of the future. The AI rural communities need is not AI that simply imitates the cities. It is AI that protects local lives, supports people, strengthens communities, and helps pass the future on to the next generation. How should AI be used in Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, and other local communities across Japan?Join us for the conversation.#AI #RuralJapan

AI can now create fake videos that look remarkably real.Social media platforms can also use AI-driven systems to decide what each person sees.So what happens if, just before an election, a video suddenly spreads showing a candidate making an outrageous statement? Is it real? Was it created by AI?And how can we know what to trust? In Episode 45 of Kokorozashi Radio, we continue the series “The Kokorozashi of AI and Humanity” with the theme:“Can AI Destroy Democracy — or Could It Help Democracy Evolve?”We explore the growing impact of AI on our information environment, including deepfakes, social media algorithms, echo chambers, political advertising, misinformation, and information manipulation. In the past, people often assumed that “seeing is believing.”Today, that assumption is becoming much harder to maintain. But the problem is not simply that fake information is increasing.AI can also create a situation in which people begin to believe that nothing can be trusted — even genuine information can be dismissed as fake.Democracy requires more than majority rule. It also depends on people having access to relevant information, understanding opposing views, and being able to question those in power. So how can these foundations be protected in the age of AI?We also discuss AI and national security.AI may help with intelligence gathering, image analysis, cybersecurity, and other areas of security. At the same time, faster AI-assisted decision-making may create new risks, especially when decisions involve conflict or human lives. In politics, AI can also be used to deliver highly personalized messages to individual voters.Using AI to explain policies more clearly may be valuable. But what happens when AI is used to analyze people’s fears or vulnerabilities and deliver different political messages to different individuals?Where should the line be drawn between communication and manipulation? At the same time, AI may have the potential to strengthen democracy.AI could help organize large numbers of opinions, make minority viewpoints more visible, identify areas of agreement and disagreement, and lower barriers to participation for people who cannot easily attend meetings or express themselves in writing. The key may not be asking AI to make the final decision.Instead, we could use AI to create a “map” for human dialogue — helping people understand different perspectives before making decisions together. We also share three simple questions that citizens can ask when they encounter emotionally powerful information online:Who is the source? Is there another reliable source confirming it?Does this really need to be shared right now?The future of democracy may depend not only on our ability to detect fake information, but also on our ability to listen to people who disagree with us, verify facts, and work together toward better answers. Can AI destroy democracy?Or can humans choose to use AI to build a stronger one?Join us for the conversation.

子どもが学ぶべき本当の力【ココロザシラジオ#44】Is ChatGPT Bringing an End to Education? What Should Children Learn in the Age of AI? | Kokorozashi

What happens to education when ChatGPT can write essays, solve problems, and explain almost anything in seconds? If AI can provide the answers, do we still need homework?Do we still need teachers? And most importantly, what should humans learn in the age of AI? In Episode 44 of Kokorozashi Radio, we continue our series “The Kokorozashi of AI and Humanity” with the theme: “Is ChatGPT Bringing an End to Education?” We imagine a future in which, by 2041, every child has an AI tutor who can adapt lessons to their individual level and explain concepts as many times as necessary. AI could make personalized learning more accessible and reduce teachers’ workloads by helping with educational materials, test analysis, and learning records. But does that mean teachers will become unnecessary? Quite the opposite. As AI takes on more of the role of delivering answers, teachers may become even more important in helping children discover their potential, develop meaningful questions, build relationships, understand the purpose of learning, and recover from failure. We also discuss the importance of reading comprehension, drawing on Noriko Arai’s research into whether AI could pass university entrance exams and her book AI vs. Children Who Cannot Read Textbooks. In an AI-driven world, basic literacy may become even more important. Children need to be able to accurately understand written information, identify conditions and relationships, verify evidence, and distinguish facts from opinions and assumptions. We explore how schools could use AI not simply as a tool for getting answers, but as a learning partner: “What is the evidence?”“Is there another point of view?”“Can you explain it with a simple example?”“And finally, what do you think?” We also discuss AI and children’s privacy, educational data, family rules for using AI, the importance of failure, and why schools may become even more important as places where people learn together. AI can provide answers. But humans still have to decide what questions are worth asking. Education in the age of AI may not be about finding answers faster. It may be about learning how to question, verify, think, communicate, imagine, and learn together. What should education become in the age of AI? Join us for this conversation. #KokorozashiRadio #AI #ChatGPT #Education #AIinEducation #GenerativeAI #ArtificialIntelligence #Learning #FutureOfEducation

Act 7: AI and Human Ambition — Episode 2: "Will AI Take Our Jobs?" In this episode, we tackle a question on everyone's mind: "Will AI take our jobs?" We begin with a thought-provoking scenario: "If AI becomes ubiquitous and wealth is distributed without the need to work, will humans truly be happy?" From there, we dive into the deeper value of work—how it shapes our sense of belonging and gives life meaning. Rather than entire professions disappearing overnight, we are entering an era where tasks are being unbundled and reorganized. Instead of scrambling to find niches AI cannot touch, we explore the distinct roles humans should lean into while collaborating with AI, along with a practical framework for auditing your own daily workflow starting tomorrow. 人間にしかできないこととは|AIの正体をわかりやすく解説【ココロザシラジオ#42】 Is AI Our Enemy or Our Ally? What Only Humans Can Do | Understanding AI in Simple Terms

What is AI, really? Is AI our enemy, or can it become a powerful ally? In this episode of Kokorozashi Radio, we take a step back and ask a fundamental question: What is artificial intelligence? From the history of AI and its three major boom periods to machine learning and generative AI such as ChatGPT, we explore how AI works and why it does not necessarily “think” in the same way humans do. We also discuss some of the challenges surrounding AI, including bias in training data, fairness, accountability, and the risks of giving AI poorly defined goals. The important question is not simply whether AI is good or bad, but how humans choose to design and use it. AI can be a powerful tool for supporting our work and solving problems. At the same time, human judgment, responsibility, and purpose remain essential. AI is neither an enemy nor a friend. What makes AI our enemy or our ally is the human “Kokorozashi” — our purpose, values, and vision. What should humans do in an age of AI?
