BAUS' commitment to a greener future

Sustainability has become a defining priority across the NHS in recent times, and urology has an important role to play in reducing its environmental impact while continuing to deliver the highest standards of patient care. Operating theatres, equipment use, travel, and waste disposal all contribute significantly to the carbon footprint of healthcare, making it vital that the specialty takes proactive steps towards a greener future. BAUS is committed to supporting its members in embedding sustainable practices at every level of urological care. Our work aligns with the wider NHS ambition to achieve net zero, recognising that change will be driven both by individual action and collective innovation. BAUS Trustee, BAUS Sustainability Lead and a Urologist at Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Tharani Nitkunan and Joe John, a Urology Registrar at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust discuss all things sustainability in urology and recent updates from across the sector.  Alongside this, sits discussions around BAUS' recently published 10-point plan - which sets out practical actions to be implemented over the next three years, with the aim of making sustainable practice part of everyday business.  This includes measuring and reducing our carbon footprint, supporting members to adopt greener models across outpatient, surgical and emergency care, and working with partners to achieve shared goals. So why not have a listen as Tharani and Joe chat greener urology and how best to reduce our impact on the environment through making more considered and sustainable actions both within the urology field and outside of the theatre on a personal level.
