How to Tell Your Toddler That People Eat Animals (Without Traumatizing Them)

Dreading the moment your vegan kid finds out that some people eat animals? Not sure when it's the right time, what words to use, or how to keep it from scaring them? As promised, here's how it went with my three-year-old. It happened in a small-town coffee shop, over a burrito we couldn't order. But the real groundwork started months earlier with bike helmets, and then cigarettes, slowly getting him used to the idea that other families do things differently than us. I share exactly what I said, how he reacted (spoiler: he pointed at people and loudly asked if they ate animals), why I got teary, and the one thing I'd tell any parent heading into this: share what you do do before you share what you don't do. Vegan-Friendly Books for Toddlers: How I Screen What My Kids Read

Vegan-Friendly Books for Toddlers: How I Screen What My Kids Read Not sure which books are okay for your vegan toddler? Wondering what to do about farm books, milk, honey, or that random duck soup page in an otherwise sweet story? And how do you handle what you can't control, like library story time? This one's for the tiny ones, like three and under, the sponge-brain years, when whatever's in the book just becomes true. Some of you asked after my Tofu book announcement if I had other vegan-friendly kids' book recs, so here we are. I talk about how we pick books in our house, and why so many "vegan" kids' books are really built for older kids with a moral lesson front and center. And if you're wondering whether you're too strict or not strict enough, I share where I draw the line, and why it's okay if yours is different. Plus why I made a block of tofu the main character, and what Southern tofu panic had to do with it. Books mentioned Tofu Goes on Vacation by Krimsey Lilleth (that's me) Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, illustrated by John SchoenherrHow to Say Hello to a Worm: A First Guide to Outside by Kari PercivalA note on Owl Moon Pa calls the owl in and then shines a big flashlight on it, and birders today generally advise against both. Bright light at night can startle owls and mess with their night vision. So is it perfectly vegan? Maybe not. But it's a gentle, look-don't-touch nature book, and that's the kind of thing that stays on our shelf. The stuff we screen out is animals being eaten, used, or ridden as the point of the story. A flashlight moment, we just talk about it. Also mentioned Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, outside Boulder, Colorado. Find a farmed animal sanctuary near you and go say hi.Fun fact: the gender-neutral word for aunt or uncle is "pibling." Niblings and Piblings!Send me your recs Got a vegan-friendly book for little ones? Fun first, no big moral lesson, nothing weird slipped in. Send it my way and I'll check it out. If the list gets good I'll share it. krimdom.com/contact 💬 Substack and YouTube: 5dKrimsey Next episode When and how do you tell your kid that some people eat animals? I dreaded it for so long, and with my three-year-old it went… fine, actually.
