How Beatboxing Became Speech Therapy | Kaila Mullady

What if the thing a child is doing for fun is also the thing teaching them to speak clearly, and nobody has to tell them? Kaila Mullady is a world champion beatboxer who turned beatboxing into speech therapy. She is a co founder of the Academy of Noise, and she teaches children to make sound with their mouths while articulation, confidence and the nerve to speak in front of people arrive alongside it. Her description of the method is sneaking vegetables into a fruit smoothie. She tells the story of a student who beatboxed with astonishing clarity and was hard to understand when he spoke. She asked whether he had noticed that himself. He had. So she told him to say his words the way he beatboxes them, punching every letter. Peanut butter. He did it for a year, and came back a different kid. This is also a conversation about her own voice. Kaila lip synced through her final year of school so that nobody would hear her sing, and was once so frightened of street performing that, in her words, she would rather have eaten an old hot dog out of a bin. The person saying this is a world champion. What she wants people to take from it is that who you are now is not who you are destined to be, and the book can be closed and a new one opened at any point you decide. We talk about the man who banged the table and said he spits on a plan B, and why she now keeps a plan A, a plan A point two and a plan eight point nine million. About who your truth needs to be enough for before it needs to be enough for anyone else. About waiting for perfect information, and why that is delay rather than care. And about being your own hype person until the belief is built rather than borrowed. In this conversation Why beatboxing feels safe for a child Stop waiting and start doing Forget plan B Who does your voice need to be enough for Too frightened to street perform Be your own hype person Kaila Mullady: @kailamullady, kailamullady.com The Academy of Noise: theacademyofnoise.comArtful Impact is a long form interview series and live Talk Series hosted by the impact artist Ekaterina Sky, with artists whose work creates real impact and people creating impact in an artful way. artfulimpact.us Instagram: @artful.impact

Why Climate Science Needs Storytellers | Robert J. Dellinger

What would it look like to live for our dreams, instead of dying for them? That is the question inside Morir Soñando, a story by Robert J. Dellinger set in the Dominican Republic in the year 2100. Robert is a doctoral researcher in atmospheric and oceanic sciences at UCLA and a co-steward of Climate Futures Studio. We recorded this conversation live during Los Angeles Climate Week, at Sky Portal X Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Robert noticed that when they talked about their own research, people's eyes went down. The science was not reaching anyone. So they stepped outside statistics and into storytelling, speculative fiction and culture, and started asking who climate stories are told to, and who gets left out of them. We talk about a grandmother telling her grandchildren how the world changed. About the solutions communities already hold, down to a mother reusing the same plastic bag again and again. About Robert the scientist and Robert the storyteller, and why they are not two different people. About being told "this is science, not art", and the long line of women who taught Robert to stand firm in who they are anyway. And about why, in Robert's words, climate change is the unifying force, the one thing we all share. In this conversation Morir Soñando and the Dominican Republic in 2100 Why a scientist turned to storytelling A grandmother telling the future Learning from knowledge that has been left out Breaking the template: working outside your field Data and emotion Pushback, and standing in your truth Why the future is nowhere in particular Robert J. Painting All Five Oceans: The Art of Slowing Down | Danielle Eubank

In this episode of Artful Impact, host Ekaterina Sky sits down with Danielle Eubank, an internationally acclaimed painter and expedition artist who became the first person to paint all five of the planet’s oceans through her 20-year project One Artist, Five Oceans. Danielle shares how a series of unexpected “accidents” led her to find her voice through painting water,  a subject that is never still, never the same, and difficult to name. Through stories of falling down a mountain, living in a small fishing village, and painting beside the sea day after day, she reflects on how stillness, observation, and presence shape both art and environmental action. Together, they explore: Why water invites calm even though it’s always moving How slowing down helps us reconnect with imagination and clarity Why art must first create passion before it can inspire action The importance of collaboration between artists, scientists, and explorers How pausing in nature resets the nervous system and fuels creativity This conversation is a reminder that art doesn’t need to shout to create impact. Sometimes, its greatest power lies in helping us pause, breathe, and feel, so that meaningful action can follow.
