    Grandma and Them Be Knowing

Proverbs 13:14Grandma and them be knowing.I just got back from Wild Goose in North Carolina—shout-out to my Wild Goose family! A highlight was Jaki Shelton Green’s workshop. She’s been North Carolina’s poet laureate since 2018.She invited us to close our eyes, feel our cells and imagine the lineage they carry—the lives of our ancestors. Now, I’m the average American male. My emotional acuity hasn’t been sharp, but I’m working on it! So I sat, eyes closed, an obedient but wild goose, leaning into something a little “woo-woo.”But baby, I was there for it.My father’s family comes from the Carolinas. Sitting there in North Carolina, listening inwardly, something felt familiar. Low-key creepy—but curiously strong. And no, this ain’t an Altoids commercial. So, were my ancestors speaking through my cells? You might say I can’t prove that, but poetically? I’d say, “ABSOLUTELY.”Thank you, Jaki Shelton Green—you got a new fan for life!It reminded me how close inherited wisdom can be.Before Google answered everything, Grandma and them already knew. They could eye a situation and say, “Don’t fool with that.” No search bar. No tutorial. Wisdom tested by living and offered before we knew enough to ask.Proverbs 13:14 says:“The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.”Wisdom doesn’t merely give information. It becomes a fountain—something living that bubbles up from within, refreshes us and redirects us.Age alone doesn’t make anybody wise, and every inherited idea isn’t sacred. Some family patterns need healing, not handing down. But when wisdom is shaped by God, tested through life and passed on in love, don’t overlook the fountain because it didn’t come with a hyperlink.Your progenitors—the people before you—may have left more than a name. Their prayers, warnings and lessons may help you recognize snares. Maybe the algorithm is already in your cells. All you gotta do is learn how to regularly tap in.Honor the wise voices God placed in your life. Ask questions. Listen closely. Keep going back to the fountain. It may be closer than you think. All of sacred texts say the Divine is “closer than close.” The Qur’an says: “closer than the jugular vein” (50:16). The Bible: “the word is in your mouth and in your heart” (Romans 10:8). Even the Chandogya Upanishad says God dwells in the heart’s sacred lotus” (8.1.1). So, yea. Closer than blood. Closer than breath. Maybe even in our very cells.REMEMBERKeep returning to the fountain; its wisdom travels in your cells.PRAYERGod, help me receive and carry life giving wisdom today.TODAY’S CHALLENGECall an elder. Ask, “What did life teach you before I was born?” Record the answer and carry it forward. Get full access to Hey Fred Lynch! at heyfredlynch.substack.com/subscribe

Proverbs 12:15 says:“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”Today's Episode: Check The ReplayAt the U.S. Open, one ball can land so close to the line that half the stadium sees it in and the other half sees it out.The player is certain. The opponent is certain. The crowd is certain. And somehow everybody saw a different ball! That’s why you check the replay. Not because your eyes were deceived—your angle just limited what you could see.Proverbs 12:15 says:“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”Did you catch what makes foolishness so dangerous? The fool’s way doesn’t look foolish to the fool.It seems right. That’s the power of self-deception. You’re not always knowingly choosing what is wrong. Sometimes, from where you’re standing, wrong looks right.Self-reliance becomes self-deception when “I trust myself” quietly turns into “I cannot be questioned.”And that’s when we need enough humility to say something uncomfortable:If I’m not paying attention, I can destroy myself. Not because I’m evil. Not because I should hate or distrust myself. But because I’m capable of misreading my own life.I can mistake applause for confirmation.Busyness for purpose.Avoidance for peace.A closed door for rejection. And if I refuse to even consider another angle, I can keep making the wrong call with complete confidence. But the wise listen to advice.Listening doesn’t mean surrendering your discernment or handing somebody else the remote control to your life.Wise counsel is not control. It’s replay. It gives you another angle before you make the final call. That advice should come from people who have earned the right to speak—people with wisdom, honesty, love and enough courage to disagree with you.And ultimately, we bring every angle before God and test it against Scripture, the character of Christ and the fruit it produces. So before you defend the call, check the replay. Before you say, “That’s just who I am,” check the replay. Before you end the relationship, quit the assignment, send the text or make the purchase—check the replay. You may still reach the same decision. But wisdom isn’t embarrassed when another angle confirms the call—or overturns it.Everybody wants to be right.Wisdom wants to get it right.🔥 REMEMBERYour viewpoint may be honest without being the whole court.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, reveal my blind spots and teach me to listen.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEReplay one decision from this week. Name what you saw, then ask God and one trusted person what your angle may have missed.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. A City Still Standing

Proverbs 11:11“Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.”Today's Episode: A City Still StandingTwenty-five years ago today, New York City took a wound the whole world could see.The towers fell, lives were stolen, families were changed forever and a nation stood tunned.Today, we remember the victims, the families carrying names and empty chairs, and the first responders and ordinary people who ran toward danger. And we remember this: destruction spoke loudly that day—but it did not get the last word.Proverbs 11:11 says:“Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.”One wicked decision can wound a city and leave its people asking, “How could anybody choose to bring this much pain upon everyday workers, fathers, mothers and children?”Destruction can happen in a moment. But a city rises through a thousand blessings. My good friend, Dr. Thomas Grassano—a beloved pastor who has served the Bronx for decades—took me to the nine eleven Memorial. I’m telling you: if you ever get the chance, go. Standing in that holy place, you feel the weight of the countless stories preserved there:A firefighter climbing the stairs.A stranger carrying another stranger.A chaplain sitting with somebody in the dust.A neighbor opening a door.Somebody looking at the rubble and saying, “We’re still here.”That’s what made New York special to people everywhere: the city took the hit, but the hit did not become the city’s identity. When a city or school campus is wounded, we put its name beside the word strong.New York Strong.Dallas Strong.Texas Strong. We aren’t pretending it doesn’t hurt. We are blessing a wounded place with courage to stand.Maybe today you need to put your own name there.Fred Strong.Maria Strong.Your name—strong. Not because you’re invincible. Not because you’re untouchable. Because destruction may have touched you—but it don’t get to name you!Saying, “Your name—strong,” doesn’t deny the pain or worship the self. It agrees with the life God is still cultivating in you.A city is people, not merely a skyline. What we carry into it matters.Cynicism corrodes.Cruel speech tears us all down. But truth-telling, service, courage and ordinary neighbor love lift a city.Today, watch what your mouth builds.Bless your city.Bless your neighbor.Bless yourself—tend the wounded places in your own story.Destruction may speak loudly—but blessing gets the last word.🔥 REMEMBERWhat we carry into a city helps shape what it becomes.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, make my words and service a blessing to cities.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGESpeak one specific blessing over your city today, then embody it through one act of neighbor love.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Are You Coachable?

Proverbs 10:17“Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.”Everybody loves the highlight reel.Nobody posts the film session where the coach rewinds the play and says, “Freeze it. Right there. You missed your assignment.”Because applause is easy…we all want to hear it, receive it and give it.But correction? Whew. Correction will show you what you’re made of.Proverbs 10:17 in the NIV says:“Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.”Notice, the verse doesn’t say whoever never makes a mistake shows the way to life. It says whoever heeds discipline. The dividing line isn’t perfection. It’s coachability. Can somebody tell you you’re wrong without you turning them into an enemy? Can somebody question your decision without you questioning their loyalty? Can the Holy Spirit interrupt your patterns before you finish defending them—your precious patterns? That’s where self-deception gets dangerous.Self-deception never introduces itself by saying, “Hello, I’m here to lie to you about you.”If it could confess, it might say:“Oh, you won’t detect me easily. I use your voice, your memories, your justifications—your version of the story. You’ll think I’m you.“I borrow your favorite strength, too. Confidence becomes arrogance. Conviction becomes stubbornness. Discernment becomes suspicion. Independence becomes isolation.“Then I surround you with echoers until agreement feels like accuracy. Meanwhile, I feed on your energy, your opportunities and your life.“Mwah-ha-ha-haaa!”Okay, the laugh is extra—but the danger isn’t.Every strength casts a shadow when it refuses correction. But Scripture pulls the mask off: ignoring correction doesn’t only mislead you; it leads others astray.Self-deception is never completely solo.Somebody is watching your leadership, repeating your language and learning your blind spot.So let me say it plainly: correction is not rejection.God doesn’t correct you to decide whether to love you. God corrects you because love refuses to leave you lost.A good coach studies the play, identifies what broke down and helps you return to the field wiser. The Holy Spirit does that in us—not humiliating us, but forming us.So when truth stings today, don’t swat it away too quickly. Mull it. Pray it. Test it against Scripture. Ask, “Is there something here I need to see?”Everybody who corrects you isn’t right. But if nobody can correct you, something is wrong.Stay teachable.Keep truth-tellers close. And when Wisdom rolls the film, don’t argue with the replay.Be coachable.🔥 REMEMBERThe dividing line isn’t perfection. It’s coachability.🙏🏽 PRAYERHoly Spirit, expose my blind spots and keep me coachable.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEAsk one trusted person, “What is one thing I may not be seeing about myself?” Listen without explaining or defending.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Play the Long Game

Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. All posts are free, but all donations help spread the message. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious…thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.Football is back, baby, and everybody loves a kickoff. The lights come on, the crowd erupts, the ball goes flying—and for a moment, beginning feels like winning. But nobody wins the season at kickoff.Kickoff gets the attention. Wisdom plays the long game.Mae West famously said, “It’s not the men in my life; it’s the life in my men.”Now, let me borrow the rhythm without borrowing “her men” to make a point. It’s not merely the years in your life. It’s the life in your years that can put better years in your life.Proverbs nine eleven says in the New International Version:“For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.”Wisdom is concerned with longevity—but not merely calendar longevity. It teaches us to build a kind of life that can hold the years God gives us.Because you can be breathing and still not be living. You can add candles without adding character. You can grow older without growing wiser. But wisdom puts something inside the years: direction, discernment, boundaries, patience and purpose. Now let me put a theological guardrail right here: Proverbs gives us a general pattern, not a guaranteed contract.Faithful people sometimes die young. Foolish people sometimes live a long time. This verse isn’t saying wisdom makes you untouchable. It’s saying God’s wisdom keeps steering life away from paths that cut it short—and toward habits, relationships and decisions that make life more whole. That’s the long game. The fool wants the big play right now.Wisdom will take four yards and keep moving. The fool burns tomorrow to feel good today.Wisdom asks, “Will this decision still bless me when the crowd goes home?”That’s where years are added—not only to your life, but inside your life.So don’t just ask God for more time.Ask God for more life in the time.More love in it.More truth in it.More presence in it.More purpose in it.Kickoff is exciting. But the blessing is becoming the kind of person who can stay on the field, read the defense, protect what matters and finish strong.Play the long game.🔥 REMEMBERDon’t just add years to life; let wisdom add life to your years.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, fill my years with wisdom, purpose, presence and life.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEBefore one decision today, ask: “Will this add life to my years—or merely add motion to my day?”About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Let Wisdom Breathe

Proverbs 8:6“Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.”Today’s Episode: Let Wisdom BreatheHave you ever heard somebody read a whole paragraph like punctuation personally offended them? They blow past every comma, run every stop sign and hit the period completely out of breath. You’re sitting there thinking, “Breathe! Please…breathe!”Sometimes that’s how we live.Rushing through conversations. Listening just long enough to reload our response. Scrolling past words before they get a chance to settle. We leave no room for wisdom to breathe. Then Proverbs eight six says in the New International Version:“Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.”Did you catch the first word?Listen. Before Wisdom asks us to speak, Wisdom asks us to stop. Her lips open, but our ears have to open too.Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”Nature isn’t stuck in slow motion or rushing in go motion. Nature moves in grow motion.Roots take their time. Fruit shows up when it’s ready.Maybe wisdom works like that. Give truth time to take root before you demand fruit.Let it finish the sentence.Let it challenge what you assumed.Literacy helps us sound the words out. Wisdom helps us live the words out.But let me put a guardrail right here: letting Wisdom breathe doesn’t mean treating every thought floating through your head like it came from God.Not every inner voice is wisdom. If it contradicts God’s character or God’s Word, it isn’t a fresh revelation. It’s just noise wearing church clothes. The wisdom speaking in Proverbs says trustworthy things. When she opens her mouth, what is right comes out.So before you send that hot text—breathe. Before you repeat what you haven’t verified—breathe. Before you make a permanent decision in a temporary emotion—breathe.Slow down long enough to ask, “Is this true? Is this right? Does this sound like the wisdom of God?”Silence isn’t always empty. Sometimes it’s where wisdom finally finishes talking. Then, when it’s time for you to speak, don’t just add more noise.Open your lips and give somebody something trustworthy.Something healing.Something right.Let wisdom breathe in you—and then let wisdom breathe through you.🔥 REMEMBERWisdom needs an open ear before it uses an open mouth.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, quiet my rush and teach me to hear wisdom.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGERead Proverbs eight six slowly three times. Sit quietly for one minute, then write down one trustworthy thing you need to hear, live or say today.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. Freeze the Frame

Proverbs 7:25 (Berean Standard Bible)"Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths."Freeze the frame!Proverbs seven has been moving like a movie.A young man leaves home, drifts toward the wrong corner, meets the wrong woman and listens to words that sound right coming from the wrong mouth. Before long, he follows her like an ox going to slaughter. You already know this movie isn't ending well. Then, right when the scene ought to fade to black—Freeze!Everybody stops moving. The voice of wisdom steps out of the scene, turns toward the camera and starts talking directly to us.Proverbs seven twenty-five says in the Berean Standard Bible:"Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths."Wisdom just broke the fourth wall! This isn't just about what happened to him. It's about what can happen in us.And notice where the warning begins. Not with his feet. With his heart. The feet stray only after the heart turns.By the time everybody sees the mess outside, the heart may have been turning for a while. That's how self-deception works. It rarely announces, "I'm about to ruin my own life."It says, "I'm only looking.""I deserve this.""I can handle it."And the one that seals the deal for many of us: "Nobody will know."Those little explanations keep the scene moving until one sober thought finally breaks the spell. And hear me: you can clock out without checking all the way out.Rest is a gift from God. Take some time to chill. Just don't give your discernment the day off. Here's the grace in this passage: God doesn't wait until the wreckage to speak. Wisdom interrupts the scene because another ending is still possible. So before the next questionable turn, freeze the frame.Ask yourself: Where is this taking me? What am I calling harmless because I want it? Who can see something here that I can't?Don't wait for the final scene to tell you where the path was headed.Change your route while your heart is still deciding.🔥 REMEMBERYour feet follow paths your heart has already begun choosing.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, interrupt my drift before my heart chooses the path.🎯 TODAY'S CHALLENGEIdentify one place where you've been explaining away a warning sign. Pause, name what your heart really wants, tell one trusted person and change one step in your route today. Get full access to Hey Fred Lynch! at heyfredlynch.substack.com/subscribe

    It’s Alive!

Proverbs 6:22“When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will speak to you.”“It's alive!”I remember being a preteen, eating popcorn and watching Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein—excuse me, “Fronkensteen.” If you know, you know. Lightning flashes. The lab starts shaking. Something that looked dead suddenly moves, and the mad scientist screams, “It's alive!”That's dramatic—but have you ever had Scripture do that? You've read a passage—maybe even a familiar one—several times. Then one morning, those same words hop off the page, look you dead in the eyes and start reading you!Proverbs six twenty-two says it this way in the Berean Standard Bible:When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will speak to you.And that “they” matters. It points back to the commands and teaching faithful parents pass down. Wisdom learned. Carried. Remembered.Walk. Sleep. Wake. That's your whole day! This wisdom ain't stuck in your quiet time. It moves with you, rests with you and wakes up talking. It gets off the page and into your pace. Now, let's be clear: the Bible isn't a magical object. Putting it under your pillow won't make wisdom leak into your head overnight. The power isn't in paper and ink. The living God speaks through His Word, the Holy Spirit brings it back to mind, and we respond by doing what it says. That's why a verse you learned years ago can catch up with you in traffic. It can interrupt an argument before your mouth gets reckless. It can steady you at two in the morning when anxiety tries to hold a meeting. It can wake up with you and say, “We're not going back to that old way today.”See, God's Word doesn't come alive merely because it gives us goosebumps. It comes alive when remembered truth becomes practiced wisdom. When the verse starts guiding your feet.Guarding your rest.Governing your response. That's when what you read begins reading you.So don't rush past the familiar passage today. Slow down. Sit with it. Ask, “God, what are You showing me right now?”Because the Word you think you already know may have fresh work to do in the life you're living today.Remember: God's Word comes alive when remembered truth becomes practiced wisdom.Prayer: Living God, make Your Word alive in how I walk.Today's Challenge: Read Proverbs 6:22 aloud three times. Write down one word or phrase that stands out, then act on it today. Share it with somebody and say, “This came alive for me today.” Get full access to Hey Fred Lynch! at heyfredlynch.substack.com/subscribe
