StrongSide 33: No Aggregation Zone with Tim MacMahon

Guest: Tim MacMahon of ESPN and The Hoop CollectiveThe new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks is… Dusty May? The Michigan guy? We’ll talk to Tim MacMahon shortly about why May and how this came together, but for now, what’s your take on Jason Kidd’s replacement? So that’s the coach. But how do May and Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz want to build this roster? We’ve got our first glimpses on Tuesday, when the Mavs took Morez Johnson. Do you like it, and what do we think should be next?A lot of stuff is happening in hockey right now, and as more players come off the board, the harder it becomes to ignore Jason Robertson’s situation. As a refresher, Robertson is a restricted free agent who needs a new contract. The Stars have reportedly offered 8 years at $12 million annually, which is the Mikko Rantanen deal. Robertson is reportedly looking for around $14 million annually. Dallas would need to free up cap room to do either number. If another team signs Robertson to a deal and Dallas doesn’t match, they get four first-round picks to be awarded over the next five drafts. So with all of that in mind: you getting nervous about going Robo going elsewhere? And what number makes you nervous if he stays?Hey, you went to the World Cup last week! What was that experience like? 00:43 - 13:27 Mavs hire Michigan HC Dusty May13:28 - 34:05 Mavs draft Morez Johnson and 9th overall34:06 - 50:53 Will Jason Robertson get a new deal in Dallas?50:54 -01:23:32 Tim MacMahon of ESPN and the Hoop Collective—-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide. If you'd like to read even more great journalism about Dallas sports then please consider subscribing to D Magazine at dmagazine.comSubscribe to the StrongSide newsletter for weekly updates on the sports happenings in Dallas https://www.dmagazine.com/site/newsletters/Studio: Haymaker Studio in FriscoProducer: Averie Luna,Matt Czizek and Julian DeanHosts: Mike Piellucci and Mike Marshall

StrongSide Episode 31: We Are The Champions with Rick Carlisle

After years of anticipation, the World Cup is finally here. Are you into it, or has the adjoining layers of nonsense – high ticket prices, watering down the field, visas – taken some of the joy out of it?We’re gonna talk to the man himself about it shortly, but Friday marks the 15-year anniversary of the greatest moment in Mavs history. You and I met for the first time like two weeks after this went down, so I have no idea how you celebrated it. But what do you remember most from the Mavs’ title run and what stands out as the most all this time later? It’s time for another week of Mavs prospect talk – you wanna talk about a large adult son? Let’s talk Aday MaraWe deliberately held off talking about the Wings looking prettay, prettay good because we have been here before. But Dallas is 7-4 record and 3rd place in the West, and they’ve only lost to two teams. Are things actually different now? Then we're joined by a legend of the NBA, Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle. You read that right. 0:00 - 12:11 Intro and World Cup is all around you12:12 - 47:50 Mavs title memories47:51 - 56:09 Could Aday Mara be a Mav?56:10 - 1:04:00 Do we believe in the Wings?1:04:01 - 1:50:33 Rick Carlisle on the Mavs 2011 Title Run—-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide.

StrongSide Episode 30: Good Vibes and Clear Direction with Isaac Harris

The first big domino of the future homes for was the teams’ decision to split up after spending more than 30 years in the same place. Now we’ve got the second: the Mavs have picked their site, and in a mild upset, it isn’t the City Hall site. Instead, the Mavs are staying in Dallas by way of building over the old Valley View mall. The Stars are on the move to Plano as well. What a tough 24 hours for Victory Park. How surprised are you, and how screwed is downtown Dallas? Did we pour dirt on Joc Pederson too soon? Because suddenly, that dude is looking a lot like the Joc Pederson the Rangers paid for. .306avg/.639slg/1.066ops in the last 30 days. You buying that he’s back, and if so, what does that mean? Two of the NFL teams that consider themselves contenders in the NFC made huge June 1st moves. One shipped out a routinely disgruntled WR and the other added the best defensive player of a generation. Could the Cowboys be next and what do these moves say about teambuilding for 2026 and beyond? It’s time for another week of Mavs prospect talk, and I’ve gotta say, I didn’t expect it would be worth our while to talk about Kingston Flemings when we first started doing this. But more than a few mock drafts have had him slip down to the ninth overall pick, so that makes him fair game for us to chat about. Tell us about the Houston point guard. Then we are joined by the sweetest man covering the Mavs, the great Isaac Harris from  @LockedOnMavericks  to talk about the 2011 championship anniversary, the current state of the Mavs, and this crop of prospects for the 2026 NBA Draft. Follow and subscribe to all of Isaac's work or else......—-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide.

StrongSide Episode 29: In the (Spread)sheets with Slightly Biased

The Rangers managed to get themselves no-hit on Monday in spite of opening the game with three consecutive walks. Impressive stuff! Is there some larger takeaway besides a bad day at the office, and is a combined no-hitter more embarrassing than being taken down by just one guy?Story that flew under the radar this weekend: the Mavericks won their legal battle with the Stars and now control the American Airlines Center outright. The Stars will appeal, but presuming this holds, as a guy who was around for a lot of the behind-the-scenes tension, what do you expect the Mavs to do with this for the remainder of their time in the building? Speaking of the Mavericks, let’s continue our prospect series with Brayden Burries. What makes the Arizona guard a good option at 9?Cowboys OTAs are about to get underway, which means getting our first glimpse of the rookies. What is the biggest Caleb Downs thing you want to see, and who is your biggest non-Caleb Downs curiosity? Then we are joined by the coolest dude in sports media, our new best friend  @SlightlyBiased . If you aren't familiar with Slightly, what is wrong with you? He's hilarious and I think you'll enjoy our conversation about the upcoming draft and the state of NBA. StrongSide Episode 28: Team Haul Ass with Mike Sirois

The Mavericks decided to fire Jason Kidd. What now and why? The Dallas Cowboys are heading into voluntary OTAs. So, what’s still to-do and what’s worrying you the most? Which position groups could derail this season before it starts? The Rangers feel tethered to being one game under .500. It’s been a little bit since we talked about the local baseball team, so let’s do a Rangers vibe check. On the one hand, Texas is just one game out of the lead in the A.L. West. On the other, Corey Seager is now on the IL, Mackenzie Gore left his last start after an inning, and they may or may not be giving up on the idea of Kumar Rocker as a starting pitcher. So, how you feeling about this whole deal?Last week, you called your shot: you wanted to talk about Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg for our next prospect spotlight. So let’s dig into it. What makes you a big fan of this dude? Then we're joined by Mr. Golf Dr. Mike "The Sports Wizard" Sirois to talk about how to make the Byron Nelson a cornerstone event and why The Colonial rocks. Let's talk golf. —-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide.

StrongSide Episode 27: Dallas > Houston with Reggie Adetula

Well, the NBA draft lottery has come and gone and, surprise, the Mavericks had bad luck again! Seems they really did use up every bit of good juju last year getting Cooper Flagg. This time around, Dallas has the ninth pick, which is one spot lower than the projected lottery odds had them going in and outside of where we saw the sweet spot of this draft. Cool stuff. On Friday, Jim Nill addressed the media after the Stars’ playoff loss to the Wild, and he said two pretty interesting things about Jamie Benn. First, it’s up to him whether or not he wants to come back. Second, if he comes back, he’s staying the captain. Will he come back, and is it a good or bad thing for Dallas if he does? The full NFL schedule release goes down Thursday, but these being the Cowboys, we already got a sneak peek of three games on the schedule. They’ll open the season on Sunday night against the Giants, they’ll get Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro in Week 3, and then it’s Philadelphia on Thanksgiving. Which of these stand out to you the most? If you’ve been watching along with us for a while, you know that we did a whole lot of player spotlights leading up to the Cowboys’ draft. Well, it’s time to do the same thing with the Mavericks. You know the drill: every week, we’ll go deep dive a name who we think has a chance to be available when Dallas picks. Mike, start us off by telling us all about Mikel Brown. Then we're joined by Reggie Adetula of 610 Sports Radio in Houston to talk about the parallels between Dallas and Houston sports cultures. —-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide.

StrongSide Episode 26: Rizz and Confidence with Christian Clark of The Athletic

When we recorded our last episode, we both had a feeling the Stars were in trouble. Turns out our worst fears were realized pretty quickly, as they got bounced in Game 6 for their earliest playoff exit since 2022. You buying this as a one-off or do you think this is a sign of a deeper issue that needs to get fixed? The Mavericks found their Nico replacement, and it’s a pretty impressive name. Masai Ujiri, formerly of the Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets, is your new president of basketball operations. You pleased with the hire? The Rangers have a new closer, and it’s someone who was contending for a spot in the rotation not too long ago. Jacob Latz is the guy in the ninth inning, and he’s been pretty damn impressive – zero runs, one base runner, three saves in as many opportunities. Is he the solution in the back of the bullpen? Then we're joined by Christian Clark of The Athletic to talk about the Mavs hiring of Masai Ujiri and what the future holds for Cooper Flagg. —-------------------Like and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy StrongSide.
