Medicine or Placebo? Joette Calabrese Makes the Case for Homeopathy After 200 Years of Controversy

What is homeopathy, does homeopathy work, and why is it still so controversial 200 years later? Is it an overlooked healing tradition, a misunderstood complement to modern medicine, or simply a placebo effect at work? In this episode of Bay Area Innovators, host Steve Ispas sits down with Joette Calabrese, founder of The Academy of Practical Homeopathy, to explain how homeopathy works, why scientists and skeptics dismiss it, and why millions of families in Europe, India, and the United States still use homeopathic remedies today. Calabrese breaks down the founding principle of cures, such as how homeopathic remedies are prepared through repeated dilution, and how homeopathy differs from herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. She shares her own path from conventional medicine to homeopathy, the years she spent observing clinics in Kolkata, India, and why she now teaches families rather than practitioners. The conversation does not avoid the criticism. Steve raises the placebo objection directly, and Calabrese offers her response. She also discusses the history most Americans never learned, including the roughly 100 homeopathic hospitals operating in the United States before the 1940s, and the role she believes market forces and patent law played in homeopathy’s decline in American medicine. Watch the full episode for a candid conversation about homeopathy, its critics, and what the debate reveals about trust, choice, and the future of healthcare.

Inside Al-Qaeda's Decade-Long Nuclear Weapons Hunt

What happens when a former prosecutor writes a book so sensitive that the government bans it outright for six years? In this episode of Bay Area Innovators, host Steve Ispas sits down with Mike Lebowitz, combat veteran, former Guantanamo Bay war crimes prosecutor, and author of “Second Wave,” the story of Al Qaeda's plot to smuggle nuclear materials into the United States through the port of New York. Lebowitz walks through how Osama bin Laden's vision of an American Hiroshima led Al Qaeda to recruit Saifullah Paracha, a wealthy and well-connected New York businessman with a green card, ties to the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, and the maritime shipping expertise the group desperately needed. The conversation covers the manhunt that followed, the clash between the FBI and CIA over interrogation tactics, and why key questions about how far the plot actually progressed remain unanswered to this day. Beyond the historical account, Lebowitz explains why he believes American counterterrorism is quietly backsliding toward a pre-9/11 posture, how congressional investigators smuggled radiological markers across both U.S. borders using fraudulent paperwork, why the Al Qaeda offshoot JNIM consolidating territory across West Africa may be the most under-reported threat today, and what the coming race for quantum computing means for national security. Watch the full episode for a rare insider account of terrorism, intelligence, and the threats that most Americans have never heard about.
