Joy as RESISTANCE: The Power of Queer As Funk

What if joy itself could be an act of resistance? In this debut episode of Third Space., host Megan te Boekhorst sits down with Jocelyn Macdougall, Alison Gorman, and Cat Hiltz of Queer As Funk — Vancouver’s hottest (and queerest) funk band — to explore the radical power of joy, friendship, and belonging. From Pride stages to small-town community halls, Queer As Funk transforms music into connection and celebration. Together, they talk about how art builds belonging, why queer joy matters now more than ever, and how showing up in full colour is both healing and political. In this conversation, we explore: How Queer As Funk became a movement for connection and community The balance between celebration and advocacy in queer spaces — if such a thing exists What it means to bring joy, visibility, and music to rural communities Why joy — especially queer joy — is a radical act of love This episode is an invitation to dance, to listen, and to remember that joy isn’t just a feeling — it’s a form of resistance. Listen now and discover how belonging sounds when it’s turned all the way up.
