The Commanders Have A MAJOR Problem On Offense

The Washington Commanders lost to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, but Sean Anderson has identified several winners and losers from the game after going back through the film. There were some legitimate positives despite the loss. Amik Robertson is Sean's first winner. Washington's defensive backfield has looked very different than expected entering the season, but Robertson has emerged as one of the team's most important cornerbacks. His physicality, ability to break on the football and recovery speed have helped him consistently make plays, and Sean believes his attitude and confidence are helping elevate the rest of Washington's defense. Ethan Cowley is another major winner. After Marcus Mariota went down with an MCL injury, the rookie quarterback was forced into action against Indianapolis. Cowley completed 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking a sack. Sean was impressed with his willingness to take deep shots and believes Cowley showed enough to prove that he can be a legitimate NFL backup quarterback. That becomes particularly important with the possibility that Cowley could be forced into action again against the New York Giants. Treylon Burks is another winner. Burks continues to make an impact as a deep threat and has started to separate himself within Washington's wide receiver room. Sean believes that if Washington can get a deep touchdown from Burks every couple of weeks, that would provide tremendous value for the offense. But there is one major loser: The running back room. Washington faced a Colts defense that had been allowing more than 140 rushing yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry entering the matchup. The Commanders still managed just 100 rushing yards on 22 carries. Austin Ekeler had four carries for 29 yards. Merritt had nine carries for 15 yards. Craig Reynolds had two carries for four yards, including a fourth-and-one play that Sean heavily criticizes. Ron Allen had three carries for one yard. Marcus Mariota was actually Washington's leading rusher before his injury. Sean believes somebody in the running back room has to step up because Washington cannot continue getting minimal production from every back. Chigoziem Okonkwo is another loser. After missing time with injury, Okonkwo returned but caught just two passes for five yards on four targets. Sean believes the athletic tight end needs to become much more of an X-factor in Washington's offense, especially if Terry McLaurin is unavailable. And then there are the pre-snap penalties. Washington has committed seven offensive pre-snap penalties over the last two games, and Sean believes that is unacceptable. While having a third-string quarterback creates some complications, these penalties are still killing drives and giving opponents opportunities. Sean believes that responsibility falls on both the players and the coaching staff. With Jayden Daniels' status still developing, Washington now turns its attention to the New York Giants. Could Ethan Cowley be forced to start again? Can Washington finally find production from its running back room? Will Amik Robertson continue his breakout season? And can Treylon Burks become a consistent weapon for the offense? Sean Anderson breaks down the biggest winners and losers from Washington's Week 4 loss to Indianapolis. The Washington Commanders head to London for a huge Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, and Sean Anderson breaks down his optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for the game. Washington enters this matchup looking to build on its impressive Week 3 win over the Seattle Seahawks and get back to .500. Sean believes a Commanders win is a very realistic outcome. But what would Washington need to do to make it happen? First, Sean wants to see the Commanders' defense hold Indianapolis to 20 points or fewer. Washington's defense made significant strides against Seattle, and Sean believes this is an opportunity to continue building momentum. The second key is the rushing attack. Sean's optimal outcome is 150 rushing yards against a Colts defense that has allowed more than 140 rushing yards per game. Even if Washington doesn't reach that number, he believes running for 100 yards would give the Commanders a strong chance to win. Marcus Mariota is another major key. After an impressive performance against Seattle, Sean wants Mariota to contribute at least two touchdowns without turning the ball over. A significant regression from Mariota could create a much more difficult situation for Washington. Sean also wants the Commanders to start fast. He believes Indianapolis is a patient team that wants to use Jonathan Taylor and the running game to gradually wear opponents down. If Washington can score early and force the Colts into a one-dimensional offense, the Commanders can put themselves in control. But there are several things that could go wrong. Washington cannot afford to sleepwalk through the first quarter in London. The Commanders also cannot allow the Colts' struggling defense to suddenly have its best performance of the season. And perhaps most importantly, Washington cannot allow another tight end to dominate its defense. The Commanders have already surrendered five touchdowns to tight ends this season, and Tyler Warren is one of the most athletic tight ends Washington has faced. Sean's realistic outcome is a Washington victory that gets the Commanders back to .500 and potentially sets the stage for Jayden Daniels' return. He also believes Stefan Diggs and Antonio Williams could have big games against Indianapolis' secondary, while Tyler Warren finding the end zone once is a realistic possibility. Could Daniel Jones also use his legs to score? Can Washington's defense continue its improvement? Will Marcus Mariota deliver another strong performance? And can the Commanders run the football against one of the NFL's weakest rushing defenses? Sean Anderson breaks down everything Washington needs to do to beat the Colts in London. Commanders vs Colts Week 4 Preview: Matchups & Prediction

The Washington Commanders head to London for a huge Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, and Sean Anderson breaks down the Colts' offense, defense and the biggest matchups Washington needs to win. After Washington's impressive victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Sean believes the Commanders have a favorable opportunity against Indianapolis. In fact, he believes Washington should win this game. The Colts have played some difficult competition, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, but Sean believes Indianapolis has struggled badly on defense and doesn't present the same level of challenge Washington just faced against Seattle. The biggest problem for Indianapolis could be Daniel Jones. Sean explains why he believes Jones can give Washington opportunities to create turnovers and why the Commanders' defense should be looking to take advantage. Washington has already created two interceptions after a strong defensive performance against Seattle, and Sean believes the Commanders can continue that momentum against Jones. Jonathan Taylor is the biggest threat on Indianapolis' offense. Sean believes Washington needs to make Taylor beat them while relying on its massive defensive line to slow down the Colts' rushing attack. The Commanders' defensive line has been one of the most impressive units on the team this season, and Sean believes the size Washington has added up front gives the team a legitimate chance to control the line of scrimmage. Josh Downs is another player Washington needs to account for. Sean believes Downs is one of the better young receivers in the NFL, but he doesn't see much depth behind him in Indianapolis' receiving corps. Tyler Warren could also be a problem. Washington has struggled against tight ends at times this season, and Sean believes Warren is athletic enough to test the Commanders' defense. On the other side of the ball, Indianapolis has some talented individual defenders, including Sauce Gardner, DeForest Buckner and Arden Key. But Sean believes the Colts' defense is nowhere near the level Washington just faced against Seattle. That could create opportunities for Marcus Mariota and Washington's running game. Sean also identifies a potential matchup to watch involving the Colts' rushing defense, which is allowing 141.3 rushing yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry. Could Washington's running backs have a huge game in London? Can Marcus Mariota take advantage of Indianapolis' struggling defense? Will the Commanders force Daniel Jones into turnovers? And can Washington's defensive line slow down Jonathan Taylor? Sean Anderson breaks down everything Washington needs to know before taking on the Colts in Week 4. The Commanders SHOULD NOT Play Jayden Daniels This Week

Jayden Daniels could potentially return for the Washington Commanders' Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, but Sean Anderson has a very different question: should he? Dan Quinn said Jayden Daniels traveled with the team to London and will have his participation limited during the week. Marcus Mariota is currently listed as the starter, but Washington will evaluate Daniels throughout the week before making a decision that is expected to come Friday. Daniels is wearing a brace on his injured left arm after suffering a dislocated elbow against the Dallas Cowboys. But Sean isn't interested in speculating about Daniels' physical condition or pretending to know whether he is medically ready to play. Instead, the question is simple: Can Marcus Mariota beat the Colts? Sean believes the answer is yes. Mariota delivered one of his best NFL performances against Seattle, helping Washington beat the defending NFC champions despite playing in difficult weather conditions. Sean doesn't expect Mariota to duplicate that performance every week, but he believes the matchup against Indianapolis gives Washington an excellent opportunity to win without putting Daniels back on the field prematurely. The Colts have struggled defensively through the first three weeks of the season. Sean breaks down Indianapolis' defensive numbers, including its points allowed, yards allowed, yards per play, rushing defense and passing defense, and explains why he believes the Colts are the weakest opponent Washington has faced this season. Indianapolis is allowing 30.3 points per game and 417 yards per game, while opponents are averaging 6.5 yards per play against the Colts. The Colts are also allowing 4.9 yards per carry and 276 passing yards per game. That creates an opportunity for Marcus Mariota, Washington's running backs and the Commanders' offense to have another productive afternoon. Sean also explains why Washington doesn't need to rush Jayden Daniels back simply because he may be physically capable of playing. The Commanders have already shown they can win without Daniels. If Mariota can help Washington beat Indianapolis, the team can then use the next several weeks to determine when Daniels is fully ready to return. Sean also discusses Indianapolis' offense, including Daniel Jones, Jonathan Taylor, Josh Downs and Tyler Warren, and explains why he isn't particularly concerned about the Colts' ability to consistently move the ball. So should Jayden Daniels play if he's medically cleared? Or should Washington give him another week to recover and allow Marcus Mariota to start? Sean Anderson makes the case for why the Commanders should take the cautious approach against Indianapolis. Let us know what you think in the comments. The Commanders Just Found Their NEXT Superstar

The Washington Commanders just picked up one of the biggest wins of their 2026 season, and Sean Anderson breaks down the biggest winners and losers from Washington's Week 3 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Spoiler: there aren't many losers. Washington entered the game with almost every reason to fold. The Commanders were without Jayden Daniels, dealing with injuries across the roster and facing the defending NFC champions in brutal weather. Instead, Washington won. Now Sean is breaking down the players and coaches who deserve the most credit for one of the team's most impressive performances of the season. Marcus Mariota is the first major winner. After stepping into the starting quarterback role, Mariota delivered a tremendous performance and showed exactly why having an experienced veteran behind Jayden Daniels is so valuable. Sean discusses Mariota's leadership, his ability to operate the offense and the way he repeatedly made plays when Washington needed them most. Then there is Sonny Styles. The rookie defensive star may be the biggest winner of them all. Styles has exceeded expectations through his first three NFL games and is already making game-changing plays all over the field. Sean explains why Styles' versatility is allowing Washington to maximize his unique athletic ability and why he believes the rookie could become one of the most important players on the Commanders' defense for years to come. Sean also gives Dan Quinn major credit. Quinn entered the season facing questions about his future, but Sean believes the way he rallied Washington's team for Sunday's game says a lot about his ability to be a head coach. Washington played with tremendous effort despite the difficult circumstances, and Sean believes Quinn deserves significant credit for getting his players ready. David Blough and defensive coordinator Durante Jones are also winners. Sean breaks down Blough's play calling, including the tunnel screen that has generated attention online and the decisions that kept Seattle's defense guessing throughout the game. On defense, Sean praises Jones for finding ways to use Sonny Styles across the defense without limiting his impact. Washington's secondary has been dealing with injuries, yet the defense continues to find ways to prevent opponents from completely taking over games. As for the losers? Sean doesn't really have one. The only loss he identifies is Leo Chanel's injury. Chanel suffered a fractured neck during Sunday's game and is expected to undergo season-ending surgery. Sean emphasizes that Chanel is a team loss rather than a “loser” after the linebacker had begun establishing himself as an important piece of Washington's defense. Sean also discusses the offensive line, which continued to hold up against one of the NFL's strongest defensive fronts. The Commanders now turn their attention to the Indianapolis Colts. At 1-2, Washington has a huge opportunity to get back to .500 and continue building momentum while Jayden Daniels works his way back. Could the Commanders be 2-2 after Week 4? Has Washington found a future star in Sonny Styles? Can Marcus Mariota keep the team afloat? And is Dan Quinn proving he deserves more credit than he received entering the season? Sean Anderson breaks down all of the biggest winners and losers from Washington's massive Week 3 win. The Washington Commanders have a huge Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, and Sean Anderson breaks down his optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for the game. Before getting into the prediction, there is major news surrounding Jayden Daniels. Adam Peters announced that Daniels will not be placed on injured reserve after further evaluation of his dislocated left elbow. After consulting multiple specialists, Daniels is considered week-to-week, giving Washington and its fans renewed optimism that the season is still on track. Now the focus shifts to keeping the season alive against Seattle. Sean believes this is a massive game for Washington. After narrowly missing an opportunity to beat Philadelphia in Week 1, the Commanders need to find a way to steal a win against another difficult opponent. The first question: Can Marcus Mariota give Washington enough offense? Sean's optimal outcome is simple: Mariota contributes two touchdowns, either through the air or on the ground. Washington's rushing attack has shown it can be effective at times, and Mariota's ability to make plays with his arm and legs could be critical against Seattle. The second question: Can Washington finally create turnovers? The Commanders have yet to intercept a pass this season, and Sean believes that needs to change. Against a quarterback like Drew Lock, Washington has an opportunity to create extra possessions and improve its turnover margin. Sean also breaks down the biggest defensive concern: Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Sean believes Washington cannot allow JSN to dominate the game and believes a 200-yard performance from Seattle's star receiver would essentially end Washington's chances. The Commanders don't need to completely shut him down, but they cannot allow him to take over the matchup. On the other side, Sean believes Antonio Williams is a realistic breakout candidate. The rookie wide receiver has shown flashes throughout the season, and Sean believes a strong performance against Seattle's talented defense could be another sign that Washington has found a legitimate offensive weapon. Then there is the quarterback matchup. If Drew Lock starts, Sean believes Washington's pressure packages can create problems. If Sam Darnold returns, Seattle becomes a much more difficult matchup because of his ability to limit mistakes and operate the offense. Ultimately, Sean believes this game is extremely difficult to predict. Seattle is the slight lean, but Washington has a legitimate path to victory. Marcus Mariota, the defense and Washington's young offensive weapons all have opportunities to make the difference. Sean's realistic expectation: A one-score game. Can Washington keep its season alive? Can Marcus Mariota deliver another strong performance? Can the Commanders force turnovers? Can Washington contain Jaxon Smith-Njigba? Sean Anderson breaks down his full Commanders-Seahawks Week 3 prediction. The Commanders Have A HUGE Problem Against The Seahawks

The Washington Commanders face one of their biggest challenges of the young 2026 NFL season when they take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. Sean Anderson breaks down the Seahawks and identifies the biggest threats Washington needs to account for heading into the matchup. Seattle is a dangerous football team, but Sean believes there is one potential weakness Washington can attack: Drew Lock. Lock has stepped into the starting quarterback role for Seattle after Sam Darnold's absence and has played well through the first two weeks. He enters this matchup with 422 passing yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. But Sean believes Washington's defense needs to pressure Lock and force him into the kind of mistakes that can change a game. That means getting Lock uncomfortable with pressure, forcing difficult decisions and making him prove that his strong start is sustainable. The biggest problem for Washington, however, may be on the other side of the ball. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has emerged as an elite weapon and is the player Sean believes Washington absolutely cannot allow to take over the game. Washington's secondary has already dealt with injuries, and Sean believes the Commanders need to use their veteran defensive backs against Smith-Njigba while finding ways to prevent him from becoming the deciding factor. Seattle also has a strong rookie running back in Darian Price and an offensive line that Sean believes can create problems, particularly on the left side with Charles Cross and Grey Zabel. Then there is Seattle's defense. Sean believes the Seahawks don't have an obvious weakness on paper. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy and Jarran Reed give Seattle a talented defensive front, while Ernest Jones leads a deep linebacker group. Devin Witherspoon is another major problem for Washington. Sean believes Witherspoon is one of the best young defensive players in the NFL and emphasizes how important it will be for Washington to know where No. 21 is at all times. The Seahawks have also been extremely disciplined under head coach Mike Macdonald. Through two weeks, Seattle has allowed just 8.5 points per game while Washington has allowed 30.5 points per game. Washington will need to find a way to move the ball against a defense that has been extremely difficult to run against, while also preventing Seattle from establishing its physical rushing attack. Can Marcus Mariota keep Washington competitive? Can the Commanders pressure Drew Lock into mistakes? Can Washington's secondary contain Jaxon Smith-Njigba? And can Washington find a way to score against one of the NFL's best defenses? Sean Anderson breaks down everything the Commanders need to know before facing Seattle in Week 3. Why Marcus Mariota Gives The Commanders A Chance

The Washington Commanders are preparing for life without Jayden Daniels, at least temporarily, and Sean Anderson breaks down what Marcus Mariota can bring to Washington while the team waits for more information on its franchise quarterback. Daniels underwent an MRI on his dislocated left elbow following Washington's Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Dan Quinn said Daniels will consult with specialists over the next few days as the Commanders determine a plan for his recovery. There is still no definitive timetable for Daniels' return, and Quinn indicated that Washington may not have another significant update until Thursday or Friday. That uncertainty leaves the Commanders in a holding pattern. But Sean Anderson believes Washington has reason to remain optimistic. Marcus Mariota stepped into the game against Dallas after Daniels was injured and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. Sean believes that performance, combined with Mariota's veteran experience, gives Washington a much more stable situation than many teams would have if they suddenly lost their starting quarterback. Sean breaks down what Mariota does well and what Washington can expect from him if he starts against the Seattle Seahawks. Mariota brings experience running an NFL offense, the ability to extend plays with his legs and a willingness to attack the deep sideline shot that has been a signature part of his game throughout his career. There are also concerns. Sean discusses Mariota's tendency to occasionally force throws into tight or double coverage and make decisions before the play develops. But he believes the positives outweigh the negatives when evaluating Mariota strictly through the lens of a backup quarterback stepping into a difficult situation. Sean also explains why Washington should continue evaluating the season one game at a time. If Mariota starts against Seattle, he will be going up against Drew Lock rather than Sam Darnold. Sean believes Washington has a legitimate opportunity to win that matchup. The next stretch gets interesting. Washington could face Seattle, Indianapolis and the New York Giants before its matchup with San Francisco and the bye week. Sean explains what Mariota would need to do in each of those games to keep Washington competitive while the team waits to see whether Jayden Daniels can return. Sean also discusses Dan Quinn's comments about continuing to use play action in David Blough's offense and why Marcus Mariota could be particularly well suited for that part of the offense. Could Washington also incorporate read-option concepts to take advantage of Mariota's athleticism? And most importantly, can Marcus Mariota keep the Commanders afloat while Jayden Daniels recovers? Sean Anderson breaks down everything you need to know about Washington's quarterback situation heading into Week 3.
