Productive Lives

Productive Lives

Life can be hard and we’ve all faced those moments that seem to stop us dead in our tracks. But what if those moments of difficulty—the 'bad news'—could actually be a springboard for something greater? I’m Cam Garven, and each week, I’ll bring you stories of extraordinary resilience and conversations about lives and ideas that are productive. This is The Productive Lives Podcast.

Stories from the Navajo Nation | Carlton Yazzie

Recorded on-location during a recent missions trip to the Navajo Nation in Arizona, host Cam Garven sits down with 21-year-old Carlton Yazzie. Though raised on the reservation among the Navajo community, Carlton belongs to the Paiute tribe. Having lost his birth parents at ages 14 and 15, Carlton shares how growing up surrounded by horses and a loving adopted family taught him early lessons in resilience, hard work, and determination. Today, Carlton operates his own entrepreneurial business as a horse trainer on the reservation, taking on wild horses, breaking them, and working with multiple horses a day. He draws a vivid parallel between breaking horses and facing life's hardships: when you get thrown off or life knocks you down, you get right back on and keep building.  Note: Just days after this recording, Carlton received the tragic news that his uncle, who helped raise him, was killed in a car accident. Please keep Carlton and his family in your prayers. Stories from the Navajo Nation | Bessie Charlie

In this episode, Cam interviews Bessie Charlie, a 76-year-old Navajo grandmother who has lived on the reservation her entire life and is currently raising her teenage granddaughter, Starlight. Through a touching moment of shared vulnerability, Bessie and Cam bond over mutual experiences of parental grief and loss. Bessie shares captivating memories from her youth—including background acting roles in classic Hollywood Westerns filmed at Lake Powell—and opens up about traditional Navajo lore, skinwalker folklore, and how her lifelong faith in God provides ultimate protection and peace. Recorded live on location during a recent short-term missions trip to Arizona, host Cam Garven sits down for an intimate conversation on the Navajo Nation—home to over 400,000 members of the largest federally recognized Native American tribe in the United States. Partnering with Hidden Springs Bible Church to run a Vacation Bible School for local youth, Cam highlights how the community on the reservation is not merely striving to survive, but actively working to thrive through deep faith, family resilience, and local ministry.
