Episode 10: A Tale of Two Kings

Episode 10: A Tale of Two Kings In this episode of Cozy Kwentos, we read and explore two classic Philippine folk tales from Philippine Folk Stories by John Maurice Miller, a curious pairing of kings whose very different characters lead to very different fates. First, we meet King Loku, a cruel and war-hungry ruler whose pride brings down karmic punishment so strange that his name still echoes in Philippine homes today. If you’ve ever heard the nighttime call of the large house lizard known as the “loku”, this story explains why. Then we turn to a gentler tale: a streetsmart fly who solves the mystery of a king’s missing ring and receives a reward that lights up the night skies. Yes, this folk story offers a charming origin for the firefly. Two kings. Two lessons. One about pride and punishment. The other about cleverness and small voices being heard. Perfect for listeners who enjoy folklore, mythology, and the strange ways stories explain the natural world. So settle in, get cozy, and join us for another kwento.Cozy Kwento is a storytelling spinoff of The Gods Must Be Crazy,  a podcast on Philippine Mythology. Episode 7: Quicoy and the Ongloc

Welcome back to Cozy Kwento, where we share Filipino folktales cozily, the way stories sound when told under warm candlelight, even when the tales themselves wander into shadow. In Episode 7: “Quicoy and the Ongloc,” we explore a classic Visayan legend from John Maurice Miller’s Philippine Folklore Stories (1904), a story once used to keep children indoors after sunset. It begins with a small accident. A mom who has had it up to HERE.  And a name spoken into the night: Ongloc,  a creature children feared long before the word “monster” found its way into our stories. What follows is a tale about caution, daring, and the strange things that can happen in a coconut grove at dusk. ⚠️ This one leans a little spooky, grown-ups, make sure you listen together with the smaller kids. Settle in, keep the lights low, and listen for the wind between the palms. Cozy Kwento is a storytelling spinoff of The Gods Must Be Crazy,  a podcast on Philippine Mythology.
