"Africans Sold Africans?" - 18th Century Black-British Abolitionism: Challenging Myths Through 'Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery' (1787) by Ottobah Cugoano

"Africans sold Africans into slavery" is a line that continues to be repeated generation after generation. But, did you know this argument was popularised in the 1700s by pro-slavery advocates to justify and defend the transatlantic slave trade? Who better to challenge these narratives than someone who was there to experience all of it? In this episode we will use the powerful writings of Quobna Ottobah Cugoano - an 18th-century self-liberated Black-British writer, activist, and abolitionist - to challenge some of today's prevailing myths about: Pre-colonial African societiesThe extent of African involvement in the transatlantic slave tradeThe presence of Black-British activism long before WindrushHe argued for the importance of reparations and restitution from European slavers, and predicted a Black revolution way before the Haitian Revolution was even a thought. Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery, published in 1787, is a remarkable, yet overlooked, piece of work that was pivotal for Black literature and abolition.
