You Can Win Games and Still Fail Kids | Coach Don Kelley on Coaching & Fatherhood

Winning football games doesn't always mean you're winning at life. What if the greatest coach your child ever has never wins a championship? In Episode 76 of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait sit down with high school football coach and biology teacher Coach Don Kelley for an honest conversation about youth sports, fatherhood, leadership, discipline, faith, and the responsibility of developing young men beyond the football field. Coach Kelley has spent years working with student-athletes from different backgrounds, learning that the true measure of a coach isn't always found in the win-loss column. Sometimes success means helping a struggling teenager find direction, teaching accountability, or becoming the positive male influence a young man desperately needs. What makes a great coach? And how much responsibility do parents have in helping coaches develop their children? Throughout this conversation, we explore: Winning vs. developing character: Why an undefeated season doesn't automatically make someone a great coach. Parents and coaches: Why mutual respect matters and how parents can unintentionally undermine authority. Discipline and accountability: Teaching young athletes to accept consequences, overcome adversity, and take responsibility. The transfer portal and college recruiting: How changes in college football are affecting opportunities for high school athletes. The sacrifices of coaching: Long hours, personal relationships, burnout, and the challenge of finding work-life balance. Faith and leadership: Learning to trust God when your career and personal life don't go according to plan. The power of mentorship: Why the words of a coach can stay with a young man long after his playing days end. Coach Kelley also shares personal stories about the players who changed his perspective, the importance of apologizing when you're wrong, and why creating a productive member of society matters more than producing a great athlete. During our Minute With God, we discuss trusting God's promises, overcoming doubt, and developing childlike faith through scripture. Whether you're a father raising a young athlete, a youth sports coach, a teacher, or someone trying to become a better leader, this episode challenges you to think differently about success. Because the real victory isn't just building better athletes. It's building better people. 🎙️ New Dad Order Podcast | Episode 76 Hosts: Ray & Jerrard Parfait Guest: Coach Don Kelley Follow Coach Kelley: Instagram: @DonnyBravo45 X/Twitter: @CoachDeeKay Follow New Dad Order: YouTube: @NewDadOrder Instagram: @newdadorderpodcast1 Business inquiries: rbelvin91@gmail.com 👍 Like this episode, subscribe, and share it with a parent or coach who needs to hear this conversation. Are You Actually Smart… Or Just Confident? #smart #confidence

What if the thing making you feel intelligent is actually keeping you from getting smarter? And how do we raise kids who are confident enough to lead—but humble enough to admit when they're wrong? In this episode of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait get into a conversation about intelligence, confidence, experience, wisdom, self-awareness, parenting, discipline, and learning how to admit when you're wrong. It starts with a simple question:How smart do you actually think you are? That leads to an even better debate. If you could only choose one—experience, confidence, or education—which would you take?Ray chooses confidence.Parfait isn't so sure.Because confidence can help someone walk into a room, take chances, communicate and lead. But confidence without self-awareness can also convince somebody that they're right when they're completely wrong. And that's where the conversation gets interesting. How many times have we argued with someone who speaks with absolute confidence—but doesn't actually know what they're talking about?More importantly:How many times have WE been that person?Ray and Parfait talk about being humbled by people who knew more than they did, political arguments and social-media echo chambers, learning to listen, recognizing when someone else has better information, and why intelligence isn't simply about being the smartest person in the room. The conversation eventually comes back to fatherhood. How do we raise children with confidence without creating arrogance? How do we give them experience while allowing them to fail? How do we teach them to think instead of simply telling them what to think?Ray and Parfait also get personal about discipline, spanking, mistakes they've made as fathers, things they planned to do differently as parents, and what age and experience have taught them about raising children. The episode begins with a discussion of self-control and biblical wisdom, including the reminder that real growth requires control over what we think, say and do.Maybe intelligence isn't knowing everything.Maybe wisdom is having enough confidence to speak—and enough humility to realize you could be wrong.👇 JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIf you could only choose ONE:Confidence, Education, or Experience?Tell us which one you're choosing and WHY in the comments.Subscribe to the New Dad Order Podcast for conversations about fatherhood, faith, marriage, youth sports, discipline, leadership and raising the next generation.✦ Sponsored ByBurns Estate Planning & Wealth AdvisorsPresident & CEO: Ernie M. Faith, Discipline & Fatherhood: Raising Kids Who Know Their Worth! #faith #discipline

What does it take to raise successful children without making their success the center of your family?Marshall Graves helped raise three Division I athletes—including 2026 NBA first-round draft pick Allen Graves—but his biggest lessons have very little to do with basketball. They’re about FAITH, FATHERHOOD, DISCIPLINE, FAMILY, and learning when your child needs to be pushed…and when Dad needs to back off.In this episode of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait sit down with Marshall Graves: husband, father of three, grandfather, business owner, longtime school bus driver, community leader, and founder of Love Is the Key Community Outreach.Marshall opens up about raising highly competitive children, the mistakes he made as a young father, and the moment his wife challenged him not to repeat the patterns of the past. That conversation changed the way he approached fatherhood.Instead of simply demanding more from his children, Marshall learned to listen.Instead of making every bad game a lecture, he learned to ask, “How do you feel about that?” Instead of measuring everything by points, wins, rankings, stars, or scholarships, the focus became EFFORT, ATTITUDE, PREPARATION—and then moving on to the next game. The Graves family’s basketball story is remarkable. Marshall discusses the different personalities of his children, the competitive environment they created at home, the lessons he learned from AAU basketball and recruiting, and Allen Graves’ journey from an overlooked high school prospect to Santa Clara, accepting a role off the bench, becoming Sixth Man of the Year, reaching the NCAA Tournament, and ultimately becoming a first-round NBA Draft pick.Marshall talks about building a personal relationship with God instead of simply “going to church,” surrendering control as a father, balancing business and family, allowing children to respectfully express themselves, teaching kids to know their worth, and creating a home where siblings compete with each other without rooting against each other. We also dive into Marshall’s decades of work through Love Is the Key Community Outreach, where he has mentored young people from different backgrounds and circumstances. And for sports parents, Marshall answers one of the hardest questions we face:When should you push your child—and when should you back off?His answer may completely change the way you handle the ride home after the next practice, game, tournament, bad performance, or tough loss. It's about raising children who know who they are when basketball, football, baseball, scholarships, rankings, trophies, money, and applause are taken away.Welcome to the New Dad Order. To contact Marshall Graves:loveisthekeyoutreach@gmail.comfacebook-Love Is The Key - Community Outreach Instagram-https://www.instagram.com/loveisthekeyoutreach?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&stkn=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==Graceful Grains-graceful-grains.square.site✦ Sponsored ByBurns Estate Planning & Wealth AdvisorsPresident & CEO: Ernie M. From Teacher to Entrepreneur: Finding Purpose Through Service! #service #leadership

What if the greatest impact you make in life has nothing to do with being a parent—and everything to do with being present? On this episode of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait sit down with educator, strategist, entrepreneur, community leader, and content creator Tim San Filippo for a conversation about mentorship, faith, purpose, leadership, creativity, service, and discovering your “why.”From teaching and mentoring young people to doing mission work in Haiti, helping with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, serving his Louisiana community, helping build a Christian school, organizing charitable races, working in marketing and communications, and launching his own creative projects. One of the most powerful lessons from this conversation is also one of the simplest: young people don’t always need adults to fix their problems. Sometimes they need an adult who is willing to be present, listen honestly, and help them discover potential they may not see in themselves.Tim shares why helping young people “find their why” has become such an important part of his work as an educator and mentor. We discuss the difference one adult can make simply by giving a young person an opportunity, believing in them, and allowing them to grow.He takes us inside his time doing mission work in Haiti, where seeing extreme poverty changed his perspective on gratitude, entitlement, faith, and what really matters. He also explains how those experiences unexpectedly prepared him for Hurricane Katrina and the massive relief effort that followed in St. Bernard Parish.Tim shares stories from living and working around a Katrina relief center, helping coordinate volunteers and supplies, and witnessing firsthand what happens when a community is devastated—and people decide to show up anyway. We also explore Tim’s career in education, marketing, graphic design, communications, entrepreneurship, and content creation. He explains how his professional journey eventually led him to TSF Strategies and Pop Nakaro, his Louisiana-based platform focused on the people, places, creators, collectors, and passions that shape culture. The conversation also dives into entrepreneurship and the reality of pursuing a passion project. Tim also discusses artificial intelligence and creativity, including how he uses AI as a tool for research and productivity without allowing technology to replace the human creativity, experience, and relationships behind meaningful work. And throughout the episode, one theme keeps resurfacing:Be present.Whether you’re a father, coach, teacher, mentor, business owner, Christian, community leader, or simply someone trying to positively influence the next generation, you don’t need to have every answer.Sometimes you just need to show up.Contact Tim San Fillippo:Websites: www.popakaro.com and www.tsfstrategies.comSocial media: @popnakaro on youtube, facebook and instagram✦ Sponsored ByBurns Estate Planning & Wealth AdvisorsPresident & CEO: Ernie M. From the Army to Addiction Recovery: Coach Ken's Powerful Story! #fatherhood

What happens when the man everyone depends on finally admits that he needs someone to pour into him?In Episode 70 of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait sit down with Coach Ken Richardson—a husband, father of two, military veteran, youth coach, and night supervisor at Restoring Freedom, a 28-day addiction recovery facility in Amite, Louisiana. What begins as a conversation about youth sports and coaching becomes an honest discussion about fatherhood, addiction recovery, military service, discipline, faith, vulnerability, marriage, raising athletes, and the pressure men carry when everyone expects them to be strong.Ken shares how his wife challenged him to stop criticizing youth coaches from the stands and get involved himself. That decision eventually turned into years of coaching and mentoring young people. But one of Ken's most important lessons as a sports dad is simple: he's trying to raise a young man, not just an athlete. The conversation goes much deeper when Ken discusses his military service, including deployments to Kosovo, Kuwait and Iraq, and his own past struggle with alcohol. Today, he works directly with men battling drug and alcohol addiction and has witnessed what happens when pride, denial, pain and isolation prevent men from asking for help.Ken explains why recovery requires more than simply telling someone to "have discipline," why men need purpose, why grace matters, and why sometimes the first step toward helping someone is simply getting them in the car and having a conversation.Ray and Parfait also discuss the complicated line between pushing your child toward his potential and trying to live through him, coaching your own children, knowing when to step back, protecting your peace, and learning to listen when your child tells you something you may not want to hear. Then the conversation takes an unexpected turn.Ken reveals that his own faith is being tested by a serious health uncertainty. After spending years encouraging athletes, fathers and men in recovery to keep fighting, he acknowledges that he is now the one who needs encouragement:"I'm still gonna be encouraging. Now it might be time for y'all to pour into me."That's what this episode ultimately becomes—a conversation about strong men allowing themselves to be supported. If you're a father, husband, coach, veteran, Christian, mentor, or someone dealing with addiction in your family, this conversation is worth hearing.Subscribe to New Dad Order for honest conversations about fatherhood, faith, marriage, youth sports, discipline, leadership, family and becoming the men our families need. Should Pro Athletes Be Allowed to Return to College Football? #football

College football has changed forever. NIL money, the transfer portal, player eligibility and professional opportunities have blurred the line between college athlete and professional athlete. But has the NCAA actually prepared for any of it?And if an athlete leaves college to turn pro, doesn't make it, and still has eligibility remaining—should he be allowed to come back?In Episode 69 of the New Dad Order Podcast, Ray and Parfait debate a question that quickly becomes much bigger than one college football player.Ray initially believes that once an athlete decides to turn professional, that decision should be final. You left, someone else worked for the opportunity you gave up, and coming back could mean taking a roster spot from another player. But then comes a different question:What if it were you?If a student leaves college for a professional opportunity in technology, medicine or another career and later realizes he isn't ready, we wouldn't prevent him from returning to school. So why do we view athletes differently? That debate leads Ray and Parfait into the much larger problem facing college athletics.NIL. Player compensation. Eligibility. Scholarships. Conference realignment. TV contracts. The transfer portal. NFL player development. Universities assuming the risk of developing athletes. And an NCAA that often appears to react to changes instead of preparing for what's coming next. The guys also discuss how emotionally connected fans become to college programs, why college sports feel different from professional sports, the NFL's relationship with college football, and whether major college football eventually needs to separate from the traditional NCAA structure entirely. The episode begins with a lesson from Proverbs about responding to criticism: don't simply reject criticism because you don't like hearing it. Consider the wisdom and character of the person giving it, determine whether it's meant to heal or hurt, and be willing to learn when the criticism is justified. That lesson becomes especially relevant when examining the NCAA itself. What do you think?Should an athlete who declares for the pros ever be allowed to return to college athletics if he still has eligibility?Drop your answer in the comments.Subscribe to the New Dad Order Podcast for conversations about fatherhood, faith, family, sports, discipline, leadership and the issues affecting today's dads and their kids.Time Stamp00:00-In this episode clips1:27-Open with a minute with God bible study3:30-Podcast topic Cut Pros returning to NCAA Football6:56-Thirdzy Ad8:06-Example of leaving-getting experience-then coming back!10:45-Why the example is and or is not comparable?11:29-Is Major league baseball drafting highschool kids, comparable?12:47-Can doors open if a highschooler leaves early, can they return?13:53-Now we cast blame on the NCAA.14:40-NCAA run like the government!?!19:31-The analogy of fiefdoms in the NFL and NBA22:27-The NCAA is taking the risks-while the NBA and NFL pick up a polished product!31:00-Should conferences leave the NCAA?38:32-Do you Know the Answer?✦ Business Inquiries📧 rbelvin91@gmail.com✦ Podcast HostsJerrard Parfait📧 jmparfait@gmail.com📱 Instagram: @itsparfaitRay Belvin📧 rbelvin91@gmail.com✦ Partners & Discounts💤 Sleep & RecoveryMelatonin-Free Sleep SupportPromo Code: NDOZZZ🔗 https://thirdzy.com/⚡ Energy BoostDubby Energy — Discount Applied Automatically🔗 https://www.dubby.gg/discount/NEWDADORDER?ref=fhfcqotb✦ New Dad Order — Official Links📸 Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/newdadorderpodcast1🎧 Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/4Zi2b2lmVbAr1m8mhHhjOK🎵 TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@newdadorder🍎 Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/new-dad-order/id1849310124🎙️ Amazon Musichttps://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ba418c03-7313-46c7-ae75-8dc55122a082/new-dad-order
