When the Threat Is a Familiar Face: Domestic Violence and Church Safety

Domestic violence does not always stay behind closed doors. It can follow someone to work, to school, and even into the church. In this episode, we look at what church leaders and safety ministries should consider when a victim warns that an abusive spouse or former partner may show up. From stalking and protection orders to children’s ministry concerns, confidentiality, and the danger of forcing reconciliation, this conversation focuses on how churches can respond with wisdom, compassion, and practical awareness. The person creating the danger may not be a stranger. They may be a familiar face, a former member, or someone the congregation already knows. That is why these situations must be taken seriously, handled carefully, and never dismissed as private relationship drama. When the Service is Over, but the Watch Isn't: Lessons from St. John's Lutheran Church

On July 5, 2026, church security at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham, Illinois, contacted law enforcement about a suspicious vehicle and a suspicious man inside the church during a time when no worship service was taking place. In this episode, we look at what has been publicly confirmed, what remains unknown, and why this incident matters for church safety ministries. The lesson is not about speculation or assigning motives. It is about vigilance during the moments many churches treat as downtime: before services, after services, between services, during Sunday school, and in the parking area. A church does not become inactive simply because worship has ended. People are still present, entrances are still being used, and the safety ministry’s responsibility may not be finished just because the sanctuary is emptying. Standing in a Moment Frozen in Time: Crosspointe Church, One Year Later

Nearly one year after the attempted mass shooting at Crosspointe Church, I returned—not to revisit the headlines, but to conduct safety-ministry training. Afterward, Jay Trombley walked me through the areas where the incident unfolded. I stood near the place where the shooter was stopped, saw the marks left behind by bullets striking the interior brick, and learned that the team member who was shot is still using crutches nearly a year later. In this off-the-cuff episode, I reflect on what it feels like to stand in a place where a few violent moments seem frozen in time. The incident may have lasted only minutes, but the physical and emotional aftermath continues long after the police leave, the news moves on, and the church resumes its normal routine.
