Black and White Movie Night

Brittany, Brendan

Oh, no! Another unnecessary but thoroughly enjoyable movie review podcast? Yep. Black and White Movie Night is hosted by Brendan (white) and Brittany (black). We choose a new theme each month and discuss (and often argue about) all the things we like, love, hate, and can't believe about the films we select. Do we have a film studies degree? Absolutely not. Do we work in the industry? If you count background acting and writing movie reviews for a local newspaper over 15 years ago...absolutely yes. Deep dives and spoilers always included. New episodes every Tuesday.

  1. Blue Valentine: Real-Life Relationships and Dirty Bathrooms

    2D AGO

Blue Valentine: Real-Life Relationships and Dirty Bathrooms

ep. 21: Housewife Brittany would take absolutely no shit about her cooking. Brendan doesn't appreciate a good bird caw when he hears one. And FYI, it's called a melodica flexible tube. The next film for February's Unhappily Ever After theme is Blue Valentine (2010). P.S. For your viewing pleasure, the dirty toilet scene is around 32:18 in the movie. And upon further investigation, it looks like she's sitting on top of the lid with a pee sound effect added in post. What do you think? You can e-mail us at hello@blackandwhitemovienight.com. FEB 10

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Romance, Regret, Repeat

ep. 20: Brittany's not as impulsive as she thinks. Brendan's a true believer in love at first sight. And do you remember why The Mandela Effect is called The Mandela Effect? Neither did we. It's another episode chock-full of Brittany's mispronunciations as we discuss the next film for February's theme of Unhappily Ever After, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).   You can e-mail us at hello@blackandwhitemovienight.com. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?: Toxic Wordplay, Toxic Marriages

ep. 19: Brittany can't get past having strangers over at 2 a.m. Brendan doesn't buy the lack of drunken behavior. And they both don't understand the movie's (old) hype. Our first film in February for "Unhappily Ever After" is Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). You can e-mail us at hello@blackandwhitemovienight.com. JAN 27

Interstellar: Holes Full of Ghosts, Love, and Amazing Visuals

ep. 18: Brittany is too "slow in the mind" to understand the time slippage. Brendan has seen this movie 20 plus times and it shows. Buckle up, y'all, Brendan couldn't help himself so this is a delightfully long one. Our final film for "Our Favorites-Part 1" theme and the month of January is Interstellar (2014). 5. Apocalypto: Zero Wolf Should Watch Peaky Blinders

    JAN 20

Apocalypto: Zero Wolf Should Watch Peaky Blinders

ep. 17: Brendan's survival skills are unrivaled. This movie somehow reminds Brittany of The Little Mermaid and Peaky Blinders. There's a big, huge, earth-shattering disagreement about a movie prop that prompts Brittany to ask listeners to weigh in. And FYI, quicksand is real; stay calm and lighten your load. Continuing "Our Favorites" theme for January is Brittany's next pick, Apocalypto (2006). -Music by Brendan and Brittany -Credits for the movie being reviewed: Writer(s): Mel Gibson, Farhad Safinia Director(s): Mel Gibson   Chapters: (00:00) Surviving In the Wild (04:48) January Theme and Film (05:43) Separating the Art from the Artist (Me Too Non-Supporters) (16:44) The 6-7 Synopses (19:34) A Short and Very Incomplete History of The Maya (24:53) Hollywood's Responsibility for Historical Accuracy + Christopher Nolan's Odyssey  (30:13) Movie Cast and Credits (33:17) Like, Love, Hate, Can't Believe (42:23) Plot Discussion: Deep Dive and Film Analysis Starts Here (51:20) The Pouch Argument (1:10:00) Swinging from Vines (2:19:35) Animals In Movies + Tiger Pee + Parks and Rec (2:31:32) A Sticky Podcast Episode (2:53:47) The Brittany Scale (3:00:45) Closing Thoughts + Next Week's Film   Sources: Suicide Prevention (988 Lifeline) Apocalypto (2006) (IMDb listing) Yucatec Language (article/excerpt from EBSCO Research Database, maayatʼaan pronunciation) Maya (Brittanica Encyclopedia entry) Apocalypto - Making Of (by Mel Gibson - 2006) (video) "Leaf-Cutter Ants in Wound Closure" (article from Wilderness & Environmental Wellness via Sage) Peaky Blinders s3e6 (IMDb listing) Is Quicksand Real (Wildland Trekking blog post) Pluribus s1e7 "The Gap" (IMDb listing) 'Racist' Apocalypto Accused of Denigrating Mayan Culture (article) Retorno a Aztlán/Return to Aztlán (1990) (IMDb listing) You can e-mail us at hello@blackandwhitemovienight.com.
