You feel terrible after food your doctor says is fine. The question to ask next is food sensitivity vs food allergy. Bloated by 2pm. Foggy by 3. They ran an allergy test and it came back clean. But you know it is the food. You feel it in your body every single afternoon. Part of The Inflammation Epidemic series, Episode 3 In this episode, you will discover: Why a clean allergy test does not rule out a food reactionThe difference between a food allergy, a food intolerance, and a food sensitivity, and why the delay is the whole problemThe working idea of how a damaged gut lining may turn everyday foods into a slow, chronic immune response (leaky gut is a real area of research, still developing)Why immunoglobulin G blood panels are not validated for diagnosing food sensitivities, and what Harvard Health calls the gold standardA three-step process to identify your trigger foods starting this week: a two-week food and symptom journal, an optional elimination, and when to look deeperI was feeling off for a long time. Bloated. Foggy. Low energy. I was sitting at my desk at Amazon at 2pm and my body felt like it was somewhere else. My doctor kept telling me my labs were normal, it was probably just stress from work. When I asked her about running a microbiome test, an actual look at my gut bacteria, she looked at me and said, "If it's not broken, why test for it?" I ran it anyway. Out of my own pocket. The results came back with real, specific issues in my gut bacteria. I addressed them. Within weeks the bloating went down. The gas went down. The fog cleared. My experience is my own, outcomes are not guaranteed, and results may vary from person to person. That was the moment. Not the moment I felt better. The moment I understood that a test coming back "normal" is not the same thing as your body being fine. It just means nobody ordered the right test. This is education, not medical advice, and nothing here is a diagnosis. I am not a physician. Whatever you find here, bring it to your doctor and work with them, not around them. Some symptoms are not a testing project. Black or tarry stool, blood in your stool or vomit, vomiting that keeps coming back, weight coming off that you never asked for, severe or persistent abdominal pain, or low iron with no cause found: see a doctor now, before any panel. Chest pain or pressure, or fainting, is emergency care now, not a lab panel. Throat tightening or trouble breathing after eating, with or without hives, is an allergy emergency, not a food sensitivity, and not a testing project. Call 911 or your local emergency number now. If you get hives alone after eating, get seen by a doctor today, and do not start the food journal. Step two of the process, the elimination, is optional and not for everyone. Do not start an elimination without your doctor or a registered dietitian if you are under 18, pregnant or nursing, underweight, have or have had an eating disorder, take medication for diabetes or another chronic condition, or have ever had hives, swelling, or trouble breathing after eating. If there is any chance you have celiac disease, get tested for it, starting with a blood test, before you cut gluten out.
