Welcome to the Memories Podcast. I'm your host, Jackson Nguyen, and I am a biochemistry senior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. I am also a trained community representative of the Massachusetts chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Memories is a podcast/interview series that features in-depth, one-on-one conversations with leading global experts across a wide range of fields to explore Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia from numerous lenses. Through these conversations, I hope to deepen public understanding of AD and share the voices of those working to make a difference around the world. Memories is a personal passion project of mine where I hope to engage in fruitful conversations with experts to learn more about Alzheimer’s and spread awareness of its devastating condition to my community.     Episode 11: Early Diagnosis, Lasting Identity - Insights from Dr. Anila Medina, Internist and Geriatrician at UMass Memorial Medical Center

    In today's episode, I had the pleasure to speak to Dr. Anila Medina, a board-certified internist and geriatrician from UMass Memorial Health. This episode was very meaningful to me as I was able to first-hand learn from a physician and hear about her unique insights and perspectives regarding dementia care, a field I am longing to pursue. Dr. Medina shared with us her remarkable journey into medicine and geriatric care extending all the way back from Pakistan. She highlighted the existing stigma surrounding dementia care, and the importance for our society to work together to reduce that stigma. She also emphasized the importance of early dementia diagnosis as that could open our door to numerous diagnostics, testing, and treatment options. Last but not least, she offered us numerous healthy and lifestyle changes to take better charge of our brain health today!   It is incredible physicians like Dr. Medina that inspires and gives me so much hope for the future of geriatric care.     Episode 6: Are Pills Always the Best Solution: Insights from Dr. Allen Power, Geriatrician and International Educator in Dementia Care

    Recently, I had the delightful opportunity to sit down and chat with the renowned Dr. Allen Power, a geriatrician, published author, and clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester. Our conversation challenged the status quo regarding the current culture of care and how pills, such as antipsychotics, are currently used as a bandage approach to manage symptoms associated with dementia. Dr. Power shared his 40+ years of experience in geriatric care and dementia, advocating for an experiential approach that prioritizes well-being of individuals. We discussed how a systemic change is needed to truly transform our existing institutionalized model of care to ensure all patients receive the dignity, respect, and positive quality of life they deserve.     In today's episode, I had the honor to speak with Julie McMurray, the senior manager of the Central MA Region of the Alzheimer's Association. As the title suggests, no patient living with dementia is alone on this journey. We discuss the importance of understanding dementia, recognizing warning signs, and the impact of stigma on diagnosis. We discuss the empowerment that comes with early diagnosis and the need for effective communication strategies in caregiving. Our conversation also highlights the significance of community support, healthy habits for brain health, and the vital role of the Alzheimer's Association in providing resources and advocacy. 📌 The Alzheimer’s Association has a 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900) that offers support and guidance to those living with dementia, caregivers, and families at free of charge.
