Herefordshire Hearsay

Two friends, one podcast, & plenty of local chatter. We shine a spotlight on Herefordshire’s people, stories, and quirks with plenty of conversation, laughter and a few cheeky features. We'll be doling out some Dear Herefordshire agony aunt advice to those of you with a dilemma (anonymously of course, with lots of nonsense and teasing) and playing your community shout-outs and messages. Plus we'll be gathering the gossip from the Shire in our 'Word on the Street' feature and interviewing some local legends for our Story Seat too. We can't wait to bring you a snapshot of life in our wonderfully weird part of the country. Follow us on socials @herefordshirehearsay #herefordshire #podcast

Damp Squids, Pinheads & Granny Squares

🎙️ 𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗢𝗗𝗘 𝟭𝟳: 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗗𝗦, 𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗦 & 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗬 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗦 Welcome back to another gloriously unfiltered episode of 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘆 – where sensible conversation comes to die, random facts are enthusiastically discussed and words occasionally emerge that have never before existed in the English language. 😂 This time we're recovering from the absolute mayhem of Lakefest, risking our eyesight during a solar eclipse, celebrating left-handers, wondering where all our brain cells have gone, discussing suspicious cats, discovering the surprisingly complicated world of granny squares and celebrating the friendships that spring up when people get together and have a laugh. Oh… and we meet Num𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗼𝗻. No, we hadn't heard of him either. 🤣 🎪 𝗟𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧: 𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗟 & 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗭𝗘 𝗦𝗠𝗨𝗚𝗚𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗦 What. A. Week. 😳 We kick things off with our adventures volunteering at 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁 – five days, two gates, 21 brilliant volunteers, scorching temperatures and one enormous hill that appeared to have been designed specifically to finish us off. Walking down it? Fine. Walking back up it? 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗦 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗬𝗪𝗔𝗬? 🥵🤣 We discover that people who stop halfway up to admire the “lovely view” are actually saying, “I can't breathe and if I take another step I may die.” There's dust, mini tornadoes, moisturiser-related disasters, giant ice creams, bananas, sunflowers and some very inventive attempts to smuggle booze through security. 🍺🍦🍌 One unfortunate festival-goer even gets publicly congratulated when security discovers his hidden alcohol. 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘, 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘. 😳😂 And after several exhausting days, things get so bad that makeup is very nearly removed with 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. Possibly taking the eyeball with it. Next year we're taking a caravan. 😂 🌒 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗡 𝗘𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗦𝗘 Apparently there are special glasses for watching a solar eclipse. Who knew? 👀 Instead, we investigate alternative viewing methods before somebody does the one thing you're absolutely not supposed to do… 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗟𝗬 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗡. ☀️😳 Cue temporary splodges, mysterious shapes appearing around the garden and a period of pretending everything is absolutely fine when you can't actually see properly. We also hear how ancient tribes allegedly used their knowledge of eclipses to convince other people they could make the sun disappear – which, frankly, is some impressively advanced marketing. After all the excitement, the verdict on the eclipse? 𝗔 𝗕𝗜𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗔 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗗. 🦑 Yes. Squid. We're sticking with it. ✋ NU𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗢𝗡 & 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗙𝗧-𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗗 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗦 It's been 𝗟𝗲𝗳𝘁-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, so we're celebrating the creative geniuses who apparently favour their left hand. Albert Einstein. Leonardo da Vinci. Paul McCartney. Julius Caesar. And, of course… NUMP𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘. 🤣🤣🤣 Napoleon has officially been renamed. We also discover that kangaroos tend to favour their left paws and around 90% of parrots apparently use their left foot to pick things up. 🦘🦜 Educational content? On this podcast? Steady on. 🧠 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗦 𝗚𝗢𝗡𝗘? We return to the subject of brain cells and ask what actually makes somebody intelligent. Is it education? Genetics? Life experience? Emotional intelligence? The ability to retain endless trivia? Or is the brain basically an overloaded computer that occasionally needs to 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲? 💻🧠 Our theory is that as you get older, you haven't necessarily forgotten everything – you've just got a much bigger library to search through. Unfortunately, sometimes the librarian appears to have gone for lunch. The conversation then takes the entirely natural scientific leap from intelligence to… 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗦𝗜𝗭𝗘. 😂 Festival bucket hats reveal that there may be several members of the 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 among us. And there's even a perfectly reasonable explanation for headaches: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁. 🤯 🐈 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗦: 𝗝𝗨𝗗𝗚𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗟, 𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗧 & 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗬 𝗧𝗪𝗢-𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨 Are you a cat person or a dog person? We're firmly leaning towards dogs. Dogs look at you and you know roughly what's going on. Cats look at you as though they're reviewing your performance and will be submitting their findings to management. 😾 One minute they're being affectionate. The next? 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗖𝗞. 🐾 We discuss the mysterious cat spotted attending Lakefest in a pram, cats supposedly absorbing negative energy and the story of 𝗗𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶, the resident cat from The Falcon Hotel in Bromyard, who disappeared before eventually being found eight miles away. Then there's Bear – a cat who appears to have discovered the ultimate cost-of-living hack by simply living with several different families and eating dinner at all of them. 😂 Forget nine lives. This one had multiple mortgages. 🧶 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗬 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗦: 𝗡𝗢 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 It's 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆! Which sounds considerably more exciting once you discover the names of the crochet patterns. There's the 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘆. The 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘆. And, our particular favourite… 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗗 𝗡𝗢-𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗬. 🧶🤣 Apparently there are beginner, intermediate and advanced levels to granny squares – something we were blissfully unaware of until now. We also ponder the ultimate fate of the lovingly crocheted blanket that somebody has spent months making for you. You admire it. You thank them. You treasure it. Then eventually… 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗜𝗧. 🐕😂 Granny Square Day has officially entered our brains… …and immediately cleared the cache. 💬 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧𝗦𝗔𝗣𝗣 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗦 & 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗚𝗚 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗥𝗦 Among all the silliness, there's something rather lovely about this episode too. ❤️ Our Lakefest WhatsApp group brought together people who didn't necessarily know one another beforehand, and over five days of working, laughing, sharing photos and surviving Hamburger Hill together, genuine new friendships were formed. And that leads us nicely to one of our fantastic listeners, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸, and his carp-fishing gang, the 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀. 🎣 Started in 2019, the group has brought together men and women with a shared passion for carp fishing – but it's about far more than catching fish. They're a community, they organise trips together, share tactics, help one another out and even have their own merchandise. 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬'𝗩𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗧 𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗘. We really need to get our finger out. 🤣 Best of all, Mark listens to 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘆 while he's out fishing. So Mark and the Snagg Warriors – this one's for you! 🎣🎧❤️ 🎭 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗘: 𝗙𝗟𝗢𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 & 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗖𝗞-𝗔𝗡𝗗-𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 Finally, we're back out and about around Herefordshire. ❤

🎙️ Herefordshire Hearsay – Episode 13 🚲 Skydives, Stories and Summer Solstice ☀️ Buckle up (or perhaps strap on a parachute!) because Episode 13 takes us from the skies above Swansea to mysterious crop circles in rural Herefordshire, with a few giraffes, bicycles and builders thrown in for good measure. Here's what's coming up... 🪂 Taking the Plunge! We hear about nervous jumpers, incredible views and a fundraising total that left everyone smiling. Would you do a skydive? We’re still not entirely convinced... 🦆 Come Dine with Pauline A candlelit dinner sparks memories of one of Pauline's most memorable culinary disasters involving duck fillets that mysteriously transformed into something resembling conkers! The conversation turns to entertaining friends, dinner parties and why good company is often more important than good cooking. 🚲 National Bike Week (A Bit Late!) We may have missed National Bike Week by a few days, but that doesn't stop us chatting about childhood cycling adventures, scraped knees, bike proficiency tests and those ever-popular Beryl Bikes that seem to appear in the strangest places. Plus, we celebrate some fantastic local cycling initiatives. 😂 Tongue Twisters & Barry from Watford A simple mention of a bicycle museum sends the conversation spectacularly off course and into the wonderfully bizarre world of Barry from Watford and Clinton Baptiste. Expect laughter, dodgy impressions and plenty of confusion along the way. 🏡 Pauline's Patio Project Pauline's garden makeover continues as she introduces two local tradesmen who have transformed her patio area. We chat bricklaying, landscaping, learning new skills and why finding reliable local tradespeople is worth celebrating. 🦒 World Giraffe Day Why is World Giraffe Day celebrated on the Summer Solstice? From creative writing courses to murder mysteries and mysterious characters who wander off the page, it's a fascinating glimpse into the creative process. 🌞 Summer Solstice Shenanigans Things take a decidedly strange turn when reports emerge of a mysterious Summer Solstice gathering near Stoke Lacey. There are crop circles. There are rumours. There may be aliens. And apparently, clothing is optional. Eurovision, The Lost Tapes & a Very Heavy Mattress

🎙️ Episode 10 – Eurovision, The Lost Tapes & a Very Heavy Mattress This week on Herefordshire Hearsay, things spiral beautifully out of control as we discuss donuts, Eurovision fever, trapped limbs, rescued seagulls and mysterious old videotapes. Basically… business as usual. Grab a coffee (and possibly a caramel custard donut) because this episode is packed with laughs, nostalgia and wonderfully random Herefordshire chaos. 🍩 Donuts, Cake & Dangerous Levels of Custard We celebrate National Donut Week in the only way we know how — by aggressively taste-testing caramel custard donuts from Greggs and nearly entering another dimension. Meanwhile, Kerry heads off to the gorgeous Aymestrey Patisserie where her husband makes a bold two-cake decision he may later regret… and she ends up playing fetch with the world’s cleverest collie dog carrying THREE tennis balls at once. Also featured: ✨ Millionaire shortbread ✨ Fancy coffee ✨ Dog admiration ✨ Full custard facial incidents 🍳 The Great Baked Bean Debate at Docklow We head out on location to Docklow Pools Fisherman’s Arms for a breakfast expedition and immediately get pulled into the great national crisis: Should beans be on the plate… or in a pot? Pauline threatens legal action over beans touching eggs, how bizarre! While Kerry quietly removes all beans from existence entirely. Plus: 🥓 Excellent breakfasts ☕ Lakeside walks 😂 National Laughter Day 💚 Lovely chats with Jackie & Keith 🎡 Lakefest Excitement! We talk all things Lakefest and our brilliant interview with Lee from Lakefest for an upcoming Story Seat special. Without giving too much away… it was emotional, inspiring and filmed in a very unexpected location. Honestly, what a lovely human being. 🛏️ Rug Escapades Pauline vs The Mattress Possibly one of the greatest stories in podcast history. Pauline buys a giant rug for her bedroom and attempts to move an impossibly heavy bed entirely on her own. What follows includes: ⚠️ Being trapped under a mattress ⚠️ No phone nearby ⚠️ Exhaustion sandwiches ⚠️ A triumphant rug victory Against all odds… the rug ended up perfectly square. 🐦 Meet Ralph the Seagull Yes. We’ve named a seagull. Pauline tells the incredible story of rescuing baby Ralph after he fell off the roof, nursing him back to health, chasing him up the road with a net, and eventually watching him return years later demanding broccoli quiche at the back door. He now taps on the roof every morning for breakfast. Frankly, Ralph may now own the house. 🎤 Eurovision Fever Arrives Eurovision season is here and emotions are running high. We chat about: 🎶 ABBA 🎶 Dana 🎶 Mary Hopkin 🎶 Dressing up for Eurovision parties 🎶 This year’s wildly chaotic UK entry Can Britain finally win? Probably not. But we remain emotionally committed. 📼 The Lost Tapes Pauline uncovers ancient VHS recordings of her sons pretending to be a rock band in the cellar during the glorious long-haired teenage years. Expect: 🎸 Fake band documentaries 🎸 Mobbing “fans” 🎸 Ghostly dressing gown appearances 🎸 Accidental family commentary preserved forever Somewhere between Spinal Tap and complete disaster. 👽 Bromyard Aliens & Pentagon Files Doug from Bromyard is BACK with more UFO theories… and annoyingly, current events may actually support him this time. We discuss: 🛸 Pentagon UFO file releases 🛸 Crop circles 🛸 Cashpoint aliens 🛸 Whether Doug should be banned from phoning in forever The truth is out there. Unfortunately, so is Doug. 🌿 Out & About in Herefordshire This week we also chat about: 🌱 The Cart Shed Plant Fair at Garnons 🦉 Herefordshire Wildlife Trust 🥕 Riverford organic veg boxes 🚂 Waterworks Museum steam days 📚 Hay Festival excitement 🐂 The return of the Hereford Bull Trail There’s always something happening in Herefordshire… even if half of it involves cake or wildlife. 📢 Coming Next Time… In the next episode we’ll be talking about: 🛁 Towel Day - in memory of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams. 🧛 World Dracula Day 🛸 More crop circle nonsense 🎉 A brand new competition …plus whatever else happens when we leave the house unsupervised.
