EP 81 - Beneath the Labels: Who Are You Really? | Who Am I Really? (Part 5)

Who are you when everything else falls away? When the title disappears, the applause stops, the pain loses its grip, recovery is no longer the center of your story, and nobody needs anything from you—who are you then? In the fifth and final episode of the Who Am I Really? series on UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth brings together the four identities explored throughout the series—trauma, performance, recovery, and calling—to confront the question underneath all of them: What remains when the labels you've used to define yourself can no longer carry the weight of who you are? Labels aren't always bad. The problem begins when they become foundations. Pain can become the broken one. Performance can become the provider, leader, or successful one. Recovery can become the survivor or recovering one. Even calling can become the pastor, speaker, ministry person, or helper. But every one of those labels describes only part of a person. How identity quietly forms around experiences we never choseWhy trauma can turn something that happened to you into something you believe you areHow performance ties worth to usefulness and productivityWhy recovery can become home instead of a doorwayHow even calling can become another identity to protectWhy labels simplify people while God continues developing themWhat Jesus' baptism teaches us about being loved before being usefulWhy your identity doesn't depend on your circumstancesWesley's own experience moving from recovery into writing, speaking, and podcastingThe question underneath the entire series: Who are you when every label falls away? The goal isn't to erase your story. Your pain matters. Your accomplishments matter. Your recovery matters. Your calling matters. But none of them get to define the whole person. You are not your worst season. You are not your failures. You are not your title. You are not your achievements. You are not your addiction. You are not your recovery. You are not your trauma. You are not your performance. You are not your role. You are deeply known by God, deeply loved by God, and still becoming. Before this episode ends, Wesley challenges you to consider three questions: What identity have I been protecting? What label feels hardest to let go of? What would remain if every title disappeared—and would that person still be enough? This is Part 5 of Who Am I Really? Part 1: Trauma Identity — When Pain Becomes Your NamePart 2: Performance Identity — When Achievement Becomes WorthPart 3: Recovery Identity — When Healing Becomes the Whole StoryPart 4: Calling Identity — Who Did God Create You to Be?Part 5: Beneath the Labels — Who Are You Really? Ep 80 - When Willpower Fails: Rand Timmerman on Addiction, Surrender & Faith

Rand Timmerman spent decades proving he could handle whatever life put in front of him. He survived combat in Vietnam, built a successful 40-plus-year legal career, raised a family, and prided himself on strength and endurance. But behind the success, alcohol had become something he couldn't defeat through determination alone. His turning point came at 7 a.m. on a stranger's doorstep, waiting for the liquor store to open, when he finally admitted three words that changed everything: "I need help." In Episode 80 of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth sits down with Rand for a raw conversation about alcoholism, buried trauma, surrender, faith, brotherhood, and what happened when a man who didn't believe in God became desperate enough to pray anyway. Rand returned from Vietnam carrying experiences he had been taught to bury. Years later, nightmares and memories began resurfacing, and alcohol became a way to sleep, numb the pain, feel confident, and maintain the different masks he wore in different areas of his life. After repeated attempts at recovery and repeated relapses, Rand finally encountered a man named Billy Cook who understood exactly what he was facing. Billy took him to the hospital, stayed beside him, and eventually challenged him to pray to the God he didn't believe in. Rand did. Nearly 12 years later, he hasn't picked up another drink. But sobriety wasn't the end of his story. At 72, Rand joined his brother, a fellow Vietnam veteran grieving the death of his wife, on an attempt to hike the roughly 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail. Rand completed 1,863 miles, and what began as a physical challenge became a spiritual experience that reshaped his understanding of God and recovery. How buried Vietnam trauma resurfaced decades laterWhy alcohol became Rand's way of sleeping, coping, and hidingHow professional success can mask addictionWhy willpower repeatedly failed himThe morning Rand finally admitted he needed helpWhy someone told him to pray to a God he didn't believe inWhat changed after surrender replaced self-relianceHow Rand approaches sobriety nearly 12 years laterWhy he attempted the Appalachian Trail at 72What hiking 1,863 miles taught him about faithWhy recovery requires community and accountabilityThe importance of taking life one step at a timeSometimes strength isn't proving you can handle everything yourself. Sometimes strength begins when you finally admit you can't. EP 79 - Calling Identity: Who Did God Create You to Be? | Who Am I Really?

Who are you when every label falls away? Not your job, your title, your achievements, your pain, or even your recovery—who are you underneath all of it? In Episode 79 of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth continues the Who Am I Really? series by exploring calling identity and why discovering your calling begins with understanding who God created you to be. Calling isn't simply a job, ministry position, platform, or title. Roles change. Assignments end. Calling runs deeper. Through the stories of Moses, David, Joseph, Gideon, and Jesus, Wesley examines a pattern Scripture repeatedly reveals: identity comes before assignment. God isn't waiting for a more accomplished, healed, productive, or useful version of you before He loves you or begins working through your life. Why calling is bigger than your occupation or ministry roleThe difference between a role and your identityWhy Moses' calling exposed what he believed about himselfHow God establishes identity before assignmentWhy you are loved before you are usefulHow old identities can make stepping into calling uncomfortableHow Wesley's own recovery opened the door to writing, speaking, and podcastingWhy discovering God's calling often happens layer by layerMaybe the question isn't simply, "What am I supposed to do?" Maybe the better question is, "Who am I becoming?" Your pain isn't your identity. Your performance isn't your identity. Your recovery isn't your identity. And your calling isn't something you have to earn. Episode 79 is Part 4 of the five-part Who Am I Really? series. Follow UNMASKED so you don't miss the final episode, Beneath the Labels, where we bring trauma, performance, recovery, and calling together to answer the question at the center of the series: Who are you when every label falls away? EP 78 - From Ego to Obedience: Mark Osborne's Journey Back to God and Marriage

What happens when a desire to improve yourself slowly becomes a pursuit of validation? After becoming an empty nester and suffering a mild heart attack, Mark Osborne committed to changing his life. What began as a journey toward better health soon became an unhealthy pursuit of attention, recognition, and ego—bringing him dangerously close to losing his marriage. In Episode 78 of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth sits down with Mark for an honest conversation about identity, insecurity, marriage, obedience, and learning to rely on the Holy Spirit instead of personal achievement. For more than 40 years, Mark faithfully attended church while remaining in the background. But through brokenness, repentance, and God's grace, he discovered that obedience often begins where comfort ends. Today, Mark leads worship, hosts The Valiant Forge Podcast, and encourages men to pursue authentic faith—not perfect performance. In this episode: How self-improvement became an ego trapWhy success nearly cost Mark his marriageThe dangers of drifting emotionally at homeHow confession and repentance rebuilt trustWhy every man needs authentic biblical communityThe importance of small steps of obedienceLearning to hear and follow the Holy SpiritWhat it means to move from passive faith to courageous leadershipNo matter where you are in your walk with Christ, this conversation is a reminder that God specializes in restoring what pride nearly destroys. EP 77 - Recovery Identity: When Healing Becomes the Whole Story | Who Am I Really? (Part 3)

Recovery changes people. Healing changes people. Freedom changes people. But what happens when recovery itself becomes your identity? In Episode 77 of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth continues the Who Am I Really? series by exploring recovery identity—the subtle temptation to define ourselves by what we've survived instead of who God is calling us to become. Recovery is one of God's greatest gifts. It provides hope, honesty, community, and a place where healing can begin. But recovery was never intended to be the finish line. It was always meant to be the doorway into a new life. In this deeply personal episode, Wesley shares how Celebrate Recovery became the beginning of his own transformation. What started as a journey toward freedom from addiction became something much greater as God began shaping a calling through writing, speaking, and the UNMASKED podcast. Looking at Israel's journey out of Egypt and Paul's words in Philippians, Wesley challenges listeners to move beyond simply surviving and begin embracing the future God is building for them. In this episode: Why recovery is meant to be a doorway—not a destinationHow survivor identity can quietly keep us stuckWhat Israel's journey out of Egypt teaches about familiar painWhy healing should always point toward purposeWesley's personal recovery story through Celebrate RecoveryThe difference between surviving and becomingQuestions to help you step into God's calling for your lifeHealing matters. Recovery matters. But surviving was never meant to become your final identity. You are becoming who God created you to be. EP 76 - How Childhood Trauma Shapes Identity | John David Gregory

Content Advisory: This episode includes thoughtful discussion of childhood sexual abuse, trauma, pornography, shame, and emotional healing. While no graphic language or explicit descriptions are used, these topics may be sensitive for some listeners. Some wounds don't end when childhood does. They quietly shape how we see ourselves, how we build relationships, and whether we believe we're worthy of love, freedom, or grace. In this episode of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth sits down with John David Gregory for an honest conversation about childhood sexual abuse, hidden shame, pornography, identity, and what healing actually looks like. Rather than offering quick answers, this discussion explores why so many men suffer in silence, how trauma affects adulthood, and why bringing hidden wounds into the light is often the first step toward lasting freedom. In This Episode: Why childhood trauma often shapes adult identityHow shame keeps people trapped for decadesThe connection between trauma and pornography addictionWhy many men never tell anyone what happened to themHow faith becomes part of genuine healing and restorationHealing doesn't begin by pretending the past never happened. It begins when we stop carrying it alone. EP 75 - Performance Identity: When Achievement Becomes Worth | Who Am I Really? (Part 2)

What happens when your title changes? When the work slows down? When the kids move out, the ministry role ends, or no one needs you for a while? Who are you when you stop producing? In Episode 75 of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth continues the Who Am I Really? series by exploring performance identity—the subtle belief that our worth is determined by what we accomplish. While performance often looks responsible, successful, and even spiritual, it can quietly become the foundation of our identity, leaving us exhausted, anxious, and constantly striving for approval. Using the story of Martha and Mary's encounter with Jesus, along with Jesus' own baptism, Wesley explains the difference between living for acceptance and living from acceptance. This episode challenges listeners to rediscover an identity rooted in God's grace instead of their achievements. In this episode: Why performance identity often hides behind successThe difference between purpose and performanceHow achievement becomes a substitute for identityWhat Martha's story teaches about strivingWhy Jesus received affirmation before His public ministry beganHow grace frees us from constantly trying to prove ourselvesPractical questions to help uncover performance-based identityYour value was never meant to rise and fall with your productivity.
