From anxious to safe: A new path forward through light, mitochondria, and quantum biology

If you or a loved one is experiencing anxiety, you need to understand that it is not just a “false alarm”. A nervous system constantly experiencing danger signals will present with anxiety it can’t be talked out of. This is why Kelli Ritter, PhD gave up her therapy license. She now practices with 5 interchangeable pillars: * Light * Water * Earth * Food * Breath These signals are all interconnected, so she teaches people how to start and move through them in the order that works best individually as not everyone will start in the same place. But when these safety signals stack up, the danger signals being sent at the cellular and quantum scale in chronic anxiety are no longer needed. And thus, the chronic anxiety can safely go away. Dr. Kelli Ritter has been teaching families how to recover from anxiety for decades, and is now turning to coaches to help even more practitioners use her framework to help their clients who are also struggling with chronic anxiety. With more people being diagnosed every day, it’s high time to focus on the signals that actually address the danger signaling happening under the surface. Listen to the episode above where I hosted Dr. Kelli, and then tune in below for the episode where Dr. Kelli hosted me! This is a public episode. Strategies for system change from inside and building new systems (case study from lactation consulting)

Do you believe the current systems can improve? While it takes work, I do believe it is possible for systems—even large scale ones—to improve. And, I also know in some cases it is necessary (+ faster and more effective) to build new systems outside of the ones that exist. Watch Christine Staricka of Evolve Lactation and I chat about her strategies for improving the field of lactation through both of these methods. I invited her to have this conversation to learn what opportunities she saw for getting circadian rhythmicity integrated into lactation support. After all, we know breastmilk is one of the strongest cues for entraining a baby’s circadian rhythm—thus, good lactation support could reach the next generation when they are most vulnerable and help set them up for better circadian rhythms for life! Even if you don’t care about the field of lactation, there were translatable insights for other fields that suffer similarly from having grown cumbersome over years of additions, and yet still lack integrated knowledge of circadian rhythmicity where it is needed. If you resonate with Christine’s work, please subscribe to her publication (link below) to learn more and join her community for those who love moms and babies. She is a wealth of information about breastfeeding, breast health, and the field of lactation consulting. Thank you Kate Saffle, Andréa St.Jules, Selene Taylor, and many others for tuning into this live video with Christine Staricka! RSVP for my next live video through the community calendar here. If you enjoyed this interview, here are few posts I’ve shared about breastfeeding and babyhood: * Your mother gave you your circadian rhythm * Quantum Breastfeeding class (video) * Circadian Babyhood class (video) * Weaning, circadian style * Support for tandem breastfeeding * Lactational amenorrhea and circadian prolactin This is a public episode. 4. How circadian rhythms affect your period (And how morning light reversed Rachel’s PMDD)

    12/13/2025

How circadian rhythms affect your period (And how morning light reversed Rachel’s PMDD)

“I wouldn’t wish PMDD on anybody, but I’m profoundly thankful for my journey.” ~Rachel den Otter, founder of 5th Vital Nutrition In Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), disruptions of circadian rhythms are known in recent literature. But most practitioners don’t make the connection between the menstrual symptoms their clients report and the circadian disruption in their lives from artificial light at night, mistimed eating, and lack of daylight and darkness. Thankfully, we have a growing field of new practitioners, like Rachel den Otter, who are integrating circadian rhythm wisdom into the powerful work they do. Rachel is a certified health coach, Board Certified Holistic Nutrition (candidate), with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, who also understands the science of circadian biology and how it plays out in disrupted menstrual cycles. Not only does she have a strong health and wellness background, but direct personal experience with how horrible life can be with a dysfunctional menstrual cycle. By making a few changes to her routine, she reversed her PMDD! This was after a) her progesterone treatment had backfired in a shocking way, and b) she had done intensive nutritional healing that was helpful, but didn’t fully resolve her symptoms. Living with PMS or PMDD is a huge challenge, and one she hopes other women will likewise discover a way out of. Since healing, Rachel actually enjoys being a woman—a gift we hope this story imparts to women of any age who are still navigating complicated menstrual cycle problems, whether PMS, PMDD, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or infertility. All of these conditions are correlated with poor circadian health. Here’s a quick description of how it works: * The circadian rhythm is programed by light/dark cycles, feed/fast cycles, and connection to the earth via grounding and regulates the endocrine system * The endocrine system controls the hormonal surges that lead to the full completion of the menstrual rhythm each cycle * Flattened or weak circadian rhythms, which often result from lack of amplitude in the day/night cycle (ie, dim days and bright nights), makes it so the endocrine system doesn’t know when to surge which hormones * Disrupted circadian rhythms = disrupted endocrine rhythms = metabolic and reproductive challenges * Restoring circadian health is a quick way to stabilize and strengthen these rhythms, especially for women who are doing everything else “right” with regard to nutrition and exercise but who still suffer from painful or irregular periods But there’s much more to be said about this topic (and especially for what the specific day-to-day changes are that help balance infradian and circadian rhythms for women). In this episode of the Brighter Days, Darker Nights live podcast you’ll hear about: * how morning light and grounding was the key that put Rachel on a healing path * the devastating side effects of the progesterone treatment she was prescribed for her PMDD * the nutrition and exercise decisions that eased her symptoms (though not fully healing them) * the mistakes made along the way—and importantly, how she corrected course * Rachel’s mission to help other women also have easy periods like she now enjoys Connect with Rachel on her website for her 6 week program, and on IG for occasional free information about how she regulates her cycle and the changes you can make to improve your nutrition and daily rhythms. Thank you to everyone who tuned in live with us! Upcoming events with Nikko: * Join my next live video with Sarah Kleiner on December 29th, 2025 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET to learn even more about circadian rhythms, hormones and metabolism. * If you are exploring the possibility of becoming a circadian- and quantum-informed practitioner or in conducting circadian/quantum research and case studies under my mentorship (alongside other expert faculty, including Leland Stillman, MD, Dr Sara Pugh, and Sarah Kleiner) at the Institute of Applied Quantum Biology, we are hosting an info session on December 17th, 2025 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Winter Wisdom from the Far North: Thriving in the Dark at 52° Latitude

I field a lot of questions about extreme latitudes. What if the sun doesn’t rise until 9 AM? What about minus 40 degrees and many months of darkness? To answer these, I invited Musings of a WiseWoman—a birth worker and quantum biology practitioner at 52° north in Saskatchewan—to share what actually works for truly extreme winters. How to thrive in the cold and dark winter The sun in the high latitudes rises at 8:30 AM right now, heading toward 9 AM by solstice (or later for those even more North). Historically, humans thrived in these climates. Today? Polar latitudes correlate with type II diabetes, menstrual dysfunction, mood disorders and cancer. We breezed past these issues in this conversation, but if you want to dig deeper into why all these things are so important, I recommend some of Musings of a WiseWoman’s deep dives: What changed after the industrial revolution that life at the poles is now so difficult? Historical studies show human sleep naturally becomes biphasic in short photoperiods—first sleep, wake period, second sleep. Musings of a WiseWoman is one of the rare people still living this traditional (and biological) way. Chatting with her personally was another reason I invited her on the show, as I have found the circadian polyphasic unlock to be truly amazing, but have blessed few people to share about it with. What Circadian Polyphasic Sleep Can Look Like Musings of a WiseWoman stumbled into this sleep pattern naturally last year by: • Sleeping in • Eliminating artificial light after sunset • Embracing cold exposure Here’s how she described her routine, and doesn’t it sound so cozy? The sun sets at 4 PM. I come home from work at 2, sit with my cat, and fall asleep. Ninety minutes later, I wake naturally, make dinner, go back to bed later—no trouble. Musings of a WiseWoman The key? Awareness of natural sleep and productivity cycles. No overstimulation. No TV. No LED lights signaling tropical noon. Where biological night lasts 15+ hours, using bright artificial light to fight sleep is not a winning battle. Here’s some more of that science: The Melatonin-Vitamin D Dance I actually didn’t know we’d end up talking about Vitamin D supplementation, but I’m glad we did because it is such a big topic these days. I was surprised to hear she has never routinely supplemented vitamin D, and neither did her parents, because these days it seems like everyone I talk to has at least tried it. I loved how she explained the dance of season and hormones like this: “Melatonin and vitamin D are like two little buddies” So simple, but really profound in the science. In winter, your body can shift certain vitamin D functions to melatonin pathways—if you let it. Sunlight also provides benefits completely independent of vitamin D, and foods containing Vitamin D also contain cofactors not found in supplements. This is why you need actual sun and actual food, not just supplements. Winter foods? You’ll have to listen to the whole recording, but we chatted about fatty fish, wild mushrooms, organ meats, and slow cooked and roasted meats. Foods northern populations always ate. Not 50,000 IU bolus doses of isolated Vitamin D that interfere with natural storage and recycling! Birth in the Dark Since she attends birth in hospitals, at home, and as a birth keeper, I asked what she has noticed about how birth unfolds depending on the light environment. It’s rare to meet a birth worker who not only attends such diverse situations, but who is also aware of the impacts of light on birth physiology. She said she’s noticed women timing contractions with apps in early labor sometimes stay there for days! Could it be the blue light flash from their phones shutting down the hormonal cascade? In hospital births, Jenel immediately turns off all lights, covering LED indicators with towels. In home births? There’s never any light. And it seems like women in darker environments show completely different pain tolerance, energy, and labor progression. I can definitely attest to that, too! Cold Exposure for Beginners Even through we were focused for this conversation about winter, we couldn’t help but stray into talking about summer extremes, too. Saskatchewan swings from super low winter to super hot in the summer. The seasons provide natural counterpoint for this lifestyle: No air conditioning in summer. Progressive cold exposure in fall. By winter, your body is prepared for the cold. But what if you are trying to start all of this mid-winter? A few ideas we talked about: When starting out with cold acclimation, look for that rush of warmth as mitochondria fire up—not prolonged shivering that deplete you and cause stress. For example, you could try: * Hand in ice water for two minutes * Window open while driving * Head and hands exposed taking out garbage Ok, we covered a lot more than this, but you’ll just have to listen in to hear more about the realities of circadian rhythms with a teen, the inspirations from history, more about birth keeping, and why ketogenic diets matter so much more at the Poles than the Equator. For now: Two Take-homes for Tonight: 1. Candlelight dinners Watch the children take their time and eat everything. Hear your family actually talk. No probing or cajoling required when you set the ambiance up right. “If you’re going to do one simple thing—this.” I actually shared about this in one of my earliest posts ever (wow, four years ago!): 2. Snow angels Mammals without houses maintain cellular resources by laying on winter earth. Snow conducts energy. It’s why igloos worked. Plus: hello, fun! I look forward to our first snow fall so we can get out there for this. Anyways, I hope you all really enjoy this conversation. I really can’t wait to hear more about @musingsofawisewoman’s upcoming snow fort! And hibernation retreat. I’m so grateful she made time to share her insights with us. Perhaps I’ll have to invite her back for the endless summer edition of this talk. If her approach resonated with you: Connect with Jenel: for consultations, northern living wisdom, and her annual December hibernation retreat. And make sure you are also subscribed to my work for research-backed quantum biology protocols and more expert guests like this. TLDR: Winter isn’t something to survive. It’s something to remember how to live inside of—and it can even be fun. Also, thank you Eva, Caitlin Deane, and many others for tuning into this live video with Musings of a WiseWoman! 6. Primitive Reflex Integration for Birth Prep with Amanda Conta Steencken

Primitive Reflex Integration for Birth Prep with Amanda Conta Steencken

You can never go back to your past, but so many of us want to for one reason or another. “If I could do it all over again… [insert how we would avoid a mistake or pain from the past here]” It happens in every field, whether it’s wanting to change something that went wrong in our childhood, our labor, or how things went with our baby or maybe breastfeeding journey. What if you could have a re-do? Or, even better, smoothen things out from where we are now? I think our current culture is somewhat obsessed with the idea of “RE”, whether it’s re-birthing, re-wilding, re-villaging, or re-what-have-you. We all have some way we’d like to re-imagine what is possible for ourselves and our families. In this chat with the absolutely generous and amazing powerhouse Amanda Conta Steencken, she taught me so much about the specifics of how our earliest movements reside in the subconscious of our nervous system—either dormant, or activated. I may not have all the language and detail exactly right, but here are a couple ideas that came to mind for me based on what Amanda shared today: For a baby having trouble getting going, movement and activation of these reflexes may help them more successfully breastfeed or make it through their other milestones. For an older child or adult, finishing or re-doing the process by which these same reflexes go dormant may help them move into their next developmental milestone or act with a more mature nervous system response. A reflex is something that happens in response to a stimulus—and of course we are all bombarded with all sorts of stimuli each day! I was so excited to have this conversation because of how much working with Amanda during my 5th pregnancy helped me make it through my 3rd trimester with less pain. Work with Amanda Conta Steencken I hope you enjoy the conversation! Make sure to connect with Amanda if her methods resonate with you for support with your nervous system, or if you suspect activated primitive reflexes. Amanda teaches monthly, with sessions beginning with rhythmic movement training exercises, then going deeeep into fascinating quantum health topics. Here’s where you can join the Founding tier of her Substack to join the monthly masterclasses. Or, if you prefer to work with her directly, she has generously offered us 30% off individual sessions (use code NIKKO30SINGLE here) and packages (use code NIKKO30 here). Blood glucose, weight loss, nutrition, ketosis, slow living, fertility with Dr. Chesica Jones

Here in the Northern hemisphere, the days are already noticeably shorter as the weather turns toward Fall. This is the time of year many people start getting drastically more artificial light compared to sunlight in terms of light exposure. Given that metabolism and fertility are both under the influence of the circadian endocrine system, it’s very important for anyone doing pre-conception work at this time of year to be mindful not only of their diet, but also their light diet. In this talk, my friend Dr. Chesica Jones and I focused in on metabolism and circadian rhythms from the everyday perspective of slow living. While we certainly looped in some heady science, we also focused on some really practical ways it can be applied in every day life. I hope you enjoy it! Let us know what you think in the comments.
