Gunsmoke: Love of a Good Woman - When Vengeance Meets Devotion

A telegram from an old friend in Arizona warns Marshal Matt Dillon that Coney Thorne, freshly released from prison, is riding for Dodge City with murder on his mind. Years earlier, Dillon had arrested Thorne for a stage holdup he never believed the man committed - but the courts convicted him anyway, and five hard years behind bars have given Thorne plenty of time to nurse his grudge. When Thorne finally arrives, feverish and half out of his mind, it isn't a jail cell that awaits him but a sickbed - and the unexpected care of a woman with a gift for healing more than broken bodies.  Episode Quotes  "He's a good man, Marshal, but he suffered a lot being in prison the way he was... if they're given a chance, the right kind of a chance, they find their way back sometimes." - Abby Twilling  "There were a lot of things I didn't like about being a lawman, and having to face a man who was out purely for revenge was one of them." - Marshal Matt Dillon  Radio Archaeology is a Vancouver Island podcast celebrating the Golden Age of Radio through classic broadcasts including Gunsmoke, Dragnet and other timeless radio dramas while exploring the history of vintage broadcasting and storytelling. Dragnet: Big Poison - Cyanide in the Coffee Cups

Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero catch a case that starts quietly: an elderly Los Angeles couple, Walter and Kate Apperson, hasn't been seen in four days. Their next-door neighbour, barber Clarence Stokely, insists the pair never travels without saying a word - and something about the untouched house, the porch light burning for three straight nights, and a half-empty bottle of cyanide in the basement cupboard tells Friday and Romero this is more than a missing persons report. The trail leads to the Appersons’ nephew, Frank “Buzz” Apperson - a college student with a stolen car charge pending and an alibi that unravels the moment his so-called camping buddies open their mouths. Forged cheques, a fingerprint match on the cyanide bottle, and a girlfriend who unknowingly backs up his lie all tighten the net, until a long, quiet drive across the city ends at a San Pedro pier and a confession that changes everything. Episode Quotes “Come on, Buzz. You know what happened. You’re gonna have to face it sooner or later.” - Sergeant Friday “Only one thing missing, Buzz. A reason. Why’d you do it?” - Sergeant Friday Radio Archaeology is a Vancouver Island podcast celebrating the Golden Age of Radio through classic broadcasts including Gunsmoke, Dragnet and other timeless radio dramas while exploring the history of vintage broadcasting and storytelling. Gunsmoke: Old Lady - A Mother's Cold Reckoning

Marshal Matt Dillon and his deputy Chester ride past the Henry homestead one quiet morning and get a rifle shot for their trouble. Ellen Henry has never taken kindly to visitors, not since her husband Ethan died five years back and left her to scrape by alone. Her son Luther should be the one holding the place together, but he is more often found drinking away his afternoons at the Long Branch than doing an honest day's work, and the homestead shows it: three lean-tos and not a green thing growing. When rancher Karnes reports cattle stolen off his spread two nights running, suspicion falls hard on Luther. Dillon rides out to press Ellen for answers and gets nothing but a cold shoulder, then finds Ellen herself riding back into Dodge at dusk with Luther's body slung across her saddle. She claims she found him dead. But when Dillon follows her trail into the night, he uncovers a far darker truth about a mother who buried her love for her son the same day she buried her husband. Episode Quotes "I’ve been dead five years, and your time’s running short too, Cass." - Ellen Henry "It takes courage to love, to love with all of you. When the love goes, there’s nothing left but hate." - Ellen Henry "You’d be taking the coward’s way out, Ellen, if you made me kill you." - Marshal Matt Dillon Radio Archaeology is a Vancouver Island podcast celebrating the Golden Age of Radio through classic broadcasts including Gunsmoke, Dragnet and other timeless radio dramas while exploring the history of vintage broadcasting and storytelling. Dragnet: Big Actor - The One Role He Couldn't Fake

Detective Sergeant Joe Friday and his partner Ben Romero catch a narcotics detail that hits close to home: a foggy Monday morning break-in at St. Christopher's Hospital pharmacy. A young intern is found bleeding on the floor, and $10,000 worth of morphine and cocaine has vanished without a trace. No prints, no witnesses, and a nun who insists on doing a little detective work of her own before the police even arrive. The break comes when a strung-out addict named Babe Kellogg turns up with two vials of the stolen morphine, hospital serial numbers still faintly visible underneath. Rattled and unsure what city he's even in, Kellogg finally gives up his source: a small-time movie actor named Leonard Castle, currently on a soundstage playing a police detective. Episode Quotes “I don't know much about it. I'm not an actor.” - Sergeant Friday “Never heard him read better. Funny thing, though - in front of the camera, he goes to the dogs.” - Director Theodore Milton Special Thanks to our sponsor: Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca. Gunsmoke: The Old Gunfighter Nobody Believed

In Dodge City, an old man named Charlie spends his days parked outside the Dodge House, spinning yarns to anyone who'll sit still long enough to listen. His favourite subject is a legendary gunfighter called Rio Joe, a man Charlie swears he once stood shoulder to shoulder with. Most folks roll their eyes and walk on, but young Chester takes Charlie's side when a couple of toughs start pushing the old-timer around, and walks away with a black eye for his trouble. Not everyone in Dodge is willing to let a harmless old storyteller be. A local bully named Rasp decides to call Charlie's bluff once and for all, dragging him into the street in the middle of the night to make him prove he can back up his talk. Marshal Matt Dillon breaks it up, but a telegram from Washington arrives just a little too late to stop what happens next, and Dodge City learns the hard way that Charlie's stories may not have been tall tales after all. Episode Quotes "You're old enough to leave your gunfights behind you." - Marshal Matt Dillon "Don't let him put on those guns and march around till he gets himself killed." - Kitty Special Thanks to Our Sponsor Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca. Dragnet: The Big Dare - A Deadly Invitation

It was a warm September night when Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero of the LAPD Homicide Detail caught a case unlike any other on the books. Betty Dixon, a divorced mother of one, was found stabbed to death in her Los Angeles home by her sixteen-year-old son, who had come home late from a double feature his mother had insisted he stay for. There was no forced entry, nothing stolen, and no sign of a struggle beyond the body itself. Neighbours heard raised voices and a woman's strange, pleading words through the wall, but no one thought to call the police until it was already far too late. The only real evidence was a bolo knife, a torn corner of an envelope postmarked from Sonoma, and one clean set of fingerprints that matched no name on file. Weeks of patient, unglamorous detective work - checking parole records, chasing a vague description of a jealous ex-boyfriend known only as Floyd - finally led Friday and Romero to a two-time state hospital parolee named Richard Floyd Coleman. It would take the courage of his own sister, walking unannounced into a parole office, to lead detectives down a lonely stretch of Highway 66 and bring the case, and a chilling confession, to its end. Episode Quotes “She dared me to kill her. She said I didn’t have the nerve.” - Richard Floyd Coleman “You had a motive, and you haven’t got an alibi.” - Sergeant Romero Special Thanks to our sponsor: Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca. Gunsmoke: Luke’s Law - When Pride Has a Price

When old Luke Burris was beaten half to death by Smed Moley and left by the creek, his son Jess did what his father never would - he rode into Dodge and asked Marshal Dillon for help. Luke was frontier stock, the kind who had carved a life out of hard land before there was any law to speak of. He knew who had done it. He just was not about to say so. Men like Luke settled their own trouble, and he had been doing it that way his whole life. Matt Dillon could see where things were headed. Moley was bragging at the Long Branch, Luke was still talking about handling it himself, and the next visit to the Burris farm ended with young Jess shot at point-blank range. Dying, Jess named his killer with his last breath. Luke drove his boy into Dodge, buried him, and then headed south on Moley's trail. When Dillon finally caught up to him in a Texas shack, Luke had already settled the matter. Now the law - the law Luke had refused his whole life - had something to say about that. Episode Quotes “You did that all right. And your boy wouldn’t have had to die at all if you’d let me move in in the first place.” - Marshal Dillon “Nothing’s changed. We don’t need you any more than we ever did. We can take care of our own.” - Luke Burris Special Thanks to Our Sponsor Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca. Dragnet: The Big Chance - No Way Out

Officer Eugene Brewer, eight years on the force, a good record all the way, had simply disappeared somewhere along the Imperial Highway near the San Pedro cut-off. His cruiser was found idling on the shoulder, lights still on, radio still working, with no sign of a struggle, no blood, and no footprints anywhere nearby. Two truck farmers had noticed the headlights sitting still in the dark but assumed everything was fine once they heard the radio playing. Brewer had simply stepped out of his car and vanished into the night. The break came from an independent trucker named Nat Wolf, who'd helped tow a stranger out of the sand that same morning, a man who refused help with the chain and seemed determined to keep his face and his car out of view. Wolf noticed something stranger still: the man's nearly-new Plymouth had been freshly painted in cheap black paint, right down to a blacked-out license plate It led them from a stolen car to a Hollywood cashier to a packed apartment building in Las Vegas, where Mike Lupino, a paroled ex-convict, was finally cornered.   Episode Quotes "He got tough. You didn't have to kill him." - Mike Lupino "There ought to be two men in every patrol car." - Inspector Ed Backstrand Special Thanks to our sponsor: Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca.
