AASP 2026 Recap: Psychological Flexibility, Athlete Ownership, & Why Credentials Matter

Jess and Kiley just got back from the annual conference of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). They learned alongside about 1,400 professionals who work with Olympic, professional, collegiate, and youth athletes. In this quick recap episode, they share the three themes that kept coming up session after session: - You don’t have to feel good to perform well. Psychological flexibility means you can feel nervous, frustrated, or full of doubt and still choose actions that match your values. Accepting an emotion doesn’t mean agreeing with it. It means you stop fighting it. Letting go of “mental perfectionism” frees athletes to compete through the hard moments. - Athlete ownership and taking the ego out. The AASP president compared the role to being the crew for an ultramarathon runner: you’re there for every mile, but you don’t get the medal. Jess and Kiley talk about guiding athletes instead of handing them answers, and why autonomy builds more confident, independent athletes. That lesson applies to coaches and parents too. - Why the CMPC matters. They explain what it actually takes to become a Certified Mental Performance Consultant: graduate coursework, 400 hours of mentored applied experience, a certification exam, ethical oversight, and continuing education. They also explain how mental performance work differs from mental health counseling, and what questions to ask before choosing someone to work with you or your athlete. Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or parent, this episode will leave you with fresh perspective and practical reminders for the season ahead. cognelite.net | jess@cognelite.net | kiley@cognelite.net | @cognelite

Back to School & Back to Better Habits: Helping Athletes Build Routines That Help Them Thrive

The start of a new school year brings excitement, new goals, and a lot for student athletes to balance. Between classes, homework, practices, competition, relationships, and recovery, it can quickly feel like athletes are simply trying to survive each week. In this episode, Cognelite founder Jess Hanson and mental performance consultant Kiley Smith discuss how athletes can build realistic habits and routines that support both performance and overall wellbeing. They explore how to turn big goals into small, repeatable actions, prioritize intentional practice over simply doing more, protect sleep and recovery, create healthier boundaries with screens, and return to routines without judgment when life gets in the way. Jess and Kiley also share practical ideas for morning, pre-practice, homework, and evening routines, along with ways parents can provide structure, encourage independence, praise the process, and recognize when their athlete may be carrying too much. Whether you’re an athlete navigating a packed schedule or a parent wondering how to help, this episode offers practical strategies for making the school year feel more manageable, intentional, and sustainable.
