    OLD SLAVERY AND MODERN DAY SLAVERY IN THE US

    The historical roots of slavery in the United States and examine how its legacy continues to shape modern day systems, opportunities, and economic realities. We begin by briefly exploring the origins of slavery and why it began, the methods used to capture and control African people and others, the economic and political motives behind it, and how long the institution of slavery lasted. We also touch on the Emancipation Proclamation, its timeline, and the lasting impact of Jim Crow laws on generations that followed. Then we shift the conversation to the present. What does “modern day slavery” look like in today’s society? Are there systems that continue to limit opportunity and advancement for Black and Brown communities and even others?  We examine issues such as generational wealth gaps, systemic discrimination, access to technology and innovation, and whether legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, DEI initiatives, and Affirmative Action have helped level the playing field. This episode also asks the difficult but necessary questions: ·       Are the effects of slavery still present today? ·       How do racism and discrimination impact economic mobility in America? ·       What role does policy, education, and opportunity play in shaping outcomes? This is not just a historical conversation, it is a conversation about today’s economy, today’s systems, and today’s future. If we want to understand spending, wealth, ownership, and opportunity in America, we must understand the past and how it connects to the present.
