    My Side of the Mountain

As we move closer to our Lord, we can't help but move closer to the other people who are ascending. Even if we are on completely opposite sides of the mountain, the closer that we get to the peak, the closer we get to each other.  The same is true in the spiritual life: the closer that we get to God, the closer we get to each other. Now, in our journey up this mountain, there are people who are not going the same direction as us. Maybe they're going sideways. Maybe they're going backwards. These are the occasions for us to love our neighbor, the people that cross our paths as we are ascending the mountain.  It is not at all a hindrance or a distraction. The fact that somebody cuts across our path is an opportunity to love them. We take the path that we've been given, and we love the people that cross that path.     Common Ground

It might be visiting in a new city for a work event, or being out of the country, whether it was on our honeymoon or on pilgrimage to World Youth Day. When you’re in these situations, there is an observed phenomenon that often happens. You find a person that shares some common ground. Maybe they went to a rival high school, maybe you have a mutual friend, maybe the connection is that you’re both Americans visiting Europe. That common ground anchors you to each other, in a sense it grounds you.  It struck me recently how we have this in the Eucharist: if you receive the Eucharist and I receive the Eucharist, we are united in a beautiful way. No matter where we are in the world, or even if we're just at our neighborhood supermarket. The same Christ who dwells in me, dwells in you.  I think sometimes we can be too quick to assess and judge the human side of the people in front of us instead of the part of them that is our Lord.     Editor for Life

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— A friend of mine is working on his first book, and he shared an advance copy with me. It's a beautiful story, and I'll probably talk more about it one day.  Seeing the early version of it, you can see why an editor is so important. That's not at all a knock at my friend. It’s just the reality, you sometimes need an outsider’s perspective. In writing and in life, you have a lot of raw material. You have thoughts, ideas, words, even actions and beliefs. You need a trusted outsider who can come in, and speak into it, who can say things like, "I see what you're trying to say, but you need to say it differently." Or, "This path you're going down, this train of thought, needs to be rethought." Or, quite simply, "You're saying too much. You're doing too much." We are in our own story, we are so zoomed in that it can be hard to see the full picture. Now, where do we find such editors for our lives? A spiritual director or a spiritual mentor is probably the most direct example, but a spouse can certainly help here. I would also say the saints. Reading through the writings of the saints, you can kind of see what was going through their mind and use that as a reflection on the story you're living. Finally, we can pray to God for this insight. We can ask through the intercession of our guardian angel, who knows us more intimately than any human being on Earth.  Let us pray. Heavenly Father, You are the true author of our lives. You see where our story goes. Send us the people we need to live Your story. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Keep fighting the good fight.     Creating a Star

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— I recently had a flashback to my childhood years, when my brother and I would play video games usually sports like basketball, baseball, or football. We’d play as Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, or Tom Brady, but what was relatively new at the time was this idea of creating your own player. You name him, you decide I want him to be 6'3", 225 lbs., with 90th percentile speed, 95th percentile power, and on and on. It’s something that of course only exists in a video game. Because in the real world, those aren’t the rules.  God did and does want you to be a certain way, He desires you to be a certain person, different from the other players on the field.  God created each of us, not as a final product, but as the beginnings of something.  He gives certain gifts, talents, virtues, but He doesn’t give them out of the box – they’re just the seeds.  We can look at our lives right now and we can say, "I am not this or that,” but maybe one day we could be.  Let us pray. Heavenly Father, You created us out of nothing for a purpose. You formed us in the womb, give us the grace to be the person You desire us to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Keep fighting the good fight.     The Gap in the Garden

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— The Gap in the Garden Take a moment and imagine God, the Creator of the Universe, arranging this moment like a garden. Think of your own life and everything that has led up to now. Think of the people around you. God placed them all there. One by one, he put them in time and in space, in this moment. At some point in creating and arranging, He looked at everything He had, and He realized that there was a gap. There was a space for one more thing, and that thing was you. Maybe in the garden there were some more sensitive plants that needed protection from the wind, so our Lord needed one more plant to help be a shield. Maybe there were some plants that couldn't have too much sun, so He needed one more that could help take the brunt. Maybe He realized that over time the soil would be depleted, so He added one more that could enrich it. God planted you exactly where you are, exactly when you are, because He wanted your help. And now, there are people around you, people whose lives you touch, who depend on you. They depend on you to correspond with God's grace. That means different things for each of us, but at the end of the day, it's that: there are people who are depending on you to correspond to God's grace. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, You are all good and the creator of all good things. Grant us the grace to turn to You, to serve You, to love You and those around us. In Jesus’ name.     When the Lord Asks

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— When the Lord Asks Before the Incarnation, before God was made man, before Christ came to Earth taking on human flesh, He asked Mary.  He asked for her willingness to be a part of His plan. He asked for her yes to taking on the life of Christ within her.  And believe it or not, today he's asking you the same thing. He's asking you if you will be a part of His plan. He's asking you for your permission for Him to act in your life. He's asking you to take the life of Christ within you and to bring that forth into the world.  Just like Mary, we could say no. The unfortunate reality is that many days we do say no. Sometimes it's explicit. Other times it's through indifference. Not deciding is, in fact, a decision. Not answering our Lord is, in fact, an answer.  So today, when the Lord seeks, when the Lord knocks, when the Lord asks, what will we do? Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we turn to the example of Your Most Blessed Mother Mary. We ask through her intercession for the grace to say yes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.  Keep fighting the good fight.     Live the Life

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— When we consider how to bring more people into the church, how to evangelize, we often think apologetics. We think of the faith as a set of teachings, as dogma, as doctrine to be shared. When we only look through this lens we miss something. We miss that the faith is a way of life, or to use modern language, it’s a lifestyle. This isn’t actually anything groundbreaking. Plenty of saints and spiritual writers talk about it. Even our Lord says that “He is the way, the truth, and the life”. Two of those, the way and the life, don’t really imply a set of teachings. I think the truth covers that. We need the dogma, we need the doctrine, we need the teaching, but let us not neglect that our first tool in the mission of evangelization might well be just how we live our lives. Let us pray. Lord, we believe that You are the way, the truth, and the life. Give us the grace to follow Your way, to embody Your truth, to live Your life. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Keep fighting the good fight.     The Peripheries

    Get the written version in your email inbox every morning by subscribing for free at TheVictorsCrown.com ---— At least once a day, I walk downstairs for a cup of coffee. With a mug in hand, I walk back through the kitchen, through the living room, up the stairs, down the hallway, through my daughter’s bedroom, and through the ¾ door that goes to my office above the garage. And my goal is to not spill a drop. The secret to success is focusing on the cup, and letting everything else fall into the peripheries. Of course, a stray LEGO piece or doll house chair might throw me off. But it doesn’t work to do it the other way – to focus on what’s in front of me and let my coffee be in the periphery. There’s an apt metaphor here for the grace we receive in prayer. Each morning, we have the opportunity to fill our cup with God’s graces, insights, little lights that He sends our way. And then our task is to live our day without spilling the cup. With our eyes focused on God, we can let everything else fall to the peripheries. And when we do this, far from ignoring the things in front of us, we actually see them in their proper place. The reality is that most of us live in the world. There are times where we metaphorically have to set the cup down to complete a task. That’s okay. Simply pick it up again. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, every day you offer us Your graces. Teach us to cherish them, to hold on to them, to return to them. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Keep fighting the good fight. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.
