Episode 45: Are You Following Jesus… or Just Trying Not to Mess Up?

Have you ever felt like following Jesus became more about getting everything right than actually knowing Him? In this episode of Honey, That’s Grace, we’re talking about legalism and the subtle ways fear, pressure, performance, and Christian culture can shape the way we see God and ourselves. Legalism is not obedience. It is not holiness. It is not conviction. It is what happens when we begin to believe our standing with God depends on what we do, how well we perform, or whether we are getting all the “rules” right. This episode is not about saying obedience does not matter or that Christians should not pursue holiness. It is an honest conversation about the difference between obedience that grows out of grace and performance that tries to earn what Jesus has already given us. In Episode 45, we explore: What legalism actually is and how it differs from obedience and conviction How unspoken rules in Christian culture can shape our understanding of what a “good Christian woman” should look like Why legalism can make us anxious, judgmental, and afraid of disappointing God How believing God is frustrated with us can cause us to hide from Him instead of running toward Him Why we sometimes project our own frustration, disappointment, and expectations onto God What Scripture reveals about God as compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love Why Jesus consistently moved toward sinners, weakness, and people religious culture often pushed away The difference between obeying God because we love Him and performing because we are trying to earn His favor Why we need to compare Christian culture, traditions, and expectations with what Scripture actually says How understanding the heart of Jesus can move us from fear and performance into freedom and grace Timestamps: 00:00 - What legalism is and why it can be so subtle 02:48 - The unspoken rules of Christian culture 05:55 - How legalism affects the way we see God, ourselves, and other people 08:50 - When fear of disappointing God makes us hide from Him 09:49 - Moving from fear and performance back into grace 11:59 - Getting back to Scripture instead of Christian culture 14:24 - Why love and kindness draw us closer to God Scripture References: Exodus 34:6–7 — God describes Himself as compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love and faithfulness. Matthew 11:28–30 — Jesus describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart, and His yoke as easy and His burden as light. John 4:1–42 — Jesus meets the Samaritan woman with truth, compassion, and grace rather than avoiding her because of her story. Genesis 3:8–10 — Adam and Eve hide from God after sin, reflecting the instinct we still have to run from Him when we feel ashamed. 1 John 4:18 — Perfect love drives out fear. Romans 2:4 — God’s kindness leads us toward repentance. Episode 44: The One Where We Find Out Why We Are Like This

Have you ever taken a personality test and felt a little too seen? In this lighter episode of Honey, That’s Grace, we’re talking about our Myers-Briggs personality types and the surprisingly accurate ways they show up in our relationships, stress responses, strengths, and weaknesses. Jenn is an ESFJ, Katie is an ISFJ, and Alice is an ESFP... which explains quite a bit. This episode is not about treating four letters like a diagnosis, using personality as an excuse for unhealthy behavior, or building our identity around a test. It is a fun and honest conversation about understanding how we are wired, recognizing our patterns, and learning to give ourselves and other people a little more grace. In Episode 44, we explore: What our Myers-Briggs personality types say about how we relate to people Why being an extrovert does not mean always wanting to be around people How each of us naturally shows love, support, and generosity What happens when we become stressed, overwhelmed, or overstimulated Why functioning well does not always mean someone is actually okay How kindness, encouragement, loyalty, and responsibility can become unhealthy without boundaries The difference between understanding our tendencies and excusing our behavior How personality tools can help us ask better questions and understand one another Why our truest identity is not found in a personality type, but in Christ Timestamps: 00:00 - We took the Myers-Briggs test—and felt slightly exposed 06:30 - How each of us naturally shows love 11:42 - What our personalities look like under stress 16:08 - When our greatest strengths become unhealthy 19:52 - Personality tests, grace, and finding our identity in Christ Scripture References: Psalm 139:13–14 — God intentionally created us and knows every part of how we are wired. Romans 12:4–6 — We are different members of one body, with different gifts and ways of serving. 1 Corinthians 12:18–20 — God designed the body of Christ with different personalities, strengths, and roles that belong together. Galatians 5:22–23 — Our personality may shape how we naturally respond, but the fruit of the Spirit should shape how we live. Colossians 3:12–14 — Whatever our personality type, we are called to compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and love. 2 Corinthians 5:17 — Our deepest identity is not found in four letters, but in who we have become through Christ. Episode 43: What If God Isn’t Disappointed in You?

Have you ever felt like God loves you technically… but He is also a little disappointed in you?In this episode of Honey, That’s Grace, we’re having an honest conversation about the quiet belief many Christian women carry: grace is real for everyone else, but God must be tired of me, frustrated with me, or waiting for me to finally get it together. We talk about the difference between knowing God loves us in our heads and truly believing it in our hearts. This episode is not about minimizing sin or pretending our choices do not matter. It is about learning to receive the grace Jesus already purchased, respond to conviction without becoming buried in shame, and live from the truth that God’s love is not something we have to earn.In Episode 43, we explore:Why it can be easier to believe in God’s grace for other people than for ourselvesHow performance-based faith shapes the way we imagine God sees usWhy we sometimes avoid God until we feel more “palatable” or put togetherWhat Scripture reveals about God’s love for us while we are still sinnersWhy emphasizing grace does not mean minimizing sin or avoiding obedienceThe difference between shame that pushes us away and conviction that invites us backHow remembering our identity in Christ can ground us during anxiety and comparisonWhy receiving God’s grace changes how we see ourselves and extend grace to othersTimestamps:00:00 - Does God love you… but feel disappointed in you?06:37 - How does God actually see us?12:58 - Does emphasizing grace give people permission to keep sinning?16:22 - Living between minimizing sin and being buried in shame22:33 - What changes when we stop trying to earn God’s love?Scripture References:Romans 5:8 — God demonstrated His love for us while we were still sinners. His love did not begin after we became polished, obedient, or worthy.Romans 6:1–2 — Grace is not permission to continue living in sin. Encountering God’s grace changes our hearts and calls us into a new way of living.Romans 3:23–24 — We have all sinned and fallen short, yet we are justified freely by God’s grace through Jesus Christ.Ephesians 2:8–9 — Salvation is a gift received through faith, not something we earn through performance or good works.Hebrews 4:14–16 — Because of Jesus, we can approach God’s throne with confidence and receive mercy and grace when we need it most.Watch or listen on your favorite platform:▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HoneyThatsGrace▶️ Rumble: https://www.rumble.com/HoneyThatsGrace🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/honey-thats-grace/id1853852905🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Xh2yQLl6fjlplZyaGReqy?si=a01b49ede8b24e11&nd=1&dlsi=5e5120e19a16411dAbout Honey, That’s Grace:Honey, That’s Grace is a weekly podcast for Christian women who want to strengthen their mental and spiritual health. Have you ever gotten to the end of the day and felt like one more question might send you over the edge? You’re not alone. In this episode of Honey, That’s Grace, we’re having an honest conversation about decision fatigue, the mental load women carry, and why even simple questions can feel overwhelming when your brain has already made a thousand tiny decisions. We talk about the invisible weight of keeping up with schedules, groceries, appointments, family needs, unread texts, and all the small decisions that pile up throughout the day. We also talk about control, asking for help, delegating ownership instead of managing every detail, and learning to let natural consequences happen. Most of all, we look at what Scripture reminds us about self-control, wisdom, rest, and releasing what was never ours to carry alone. In this episode, we explore: Why one more question can feel like too muchThe mental load women and moms often carryHow control can add to exhaustionWhy asking for help is not failureHow ordinary work can become worshipWhat it looks like to delegate ownership and let go Scripture References: Galatians 5:22-23 — Self-control is part of the fruit of the Spirit, but God does not ask us to control every person, outcome, schedule, or responsibility around us.James 1:5 — When we need wisdom, we can ask God, and He gives generously.Matthew 11:28 — Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest.Colossians 3:23 — The ordinary work in front of us can become worship when done with the right heart.
