Lessons in Freedom

Julia Chalmers

If you’re an educator who wants more - more income, more impact, more confidence, and more freedom - you’re in the right place. Lessons in Freedom is the weekly podcast for educators who want to monetise their skills, start a side business, or scale the education business they’ve already built. Whether you’re dreaming of your first $1,000 or you’re ready to grow beyond the ceiling you’ve hit on your own, this podcast will show you the next step. My journey started in the classroom, overwhelmed and burnt out, creating resources simply to cope. Sharing them turned into my first $50… and eventually into multiple education businesses - one that grew to seven figures and another that reached well beyond six. Along the way, I’ve supported hundreds of thousands of educators globally to feel less overwhelmed in their classrooms, mentored hundreds more to monetise their skills, and become a sought-after speaker sharing my story to inspire educators to stop asking for permission and step into who they’re becoming. I’ve done all of this while raising a young, neuro-spicy family, and learning how to build a business that supports my life instead of swallowing it. And because I remember so clearly what it felt like to do it all without a road map, without a mentor, and without anyone saying “you can want more”… This podcast is the support that I needed but never had, and now it’s yours. Hosted by Australian educator, multi-business owner and mentor - Julia Chalmers delivers solo episodes that blend mindset, money, business strategy, and the identity shifts that help educators break their income ceiling, find clarity, and build a life anchored in freedom. New episodes drop every week. Follow the show so you never miss an episode.

Ep 34 - Eden Lisa on Branding Beyond Logos. Dream Clients, Messaging, and a 12-Week Content Framework.

Most service-based founders think branding is about looking good, but a beautiful logo means nothing if your messaging doesn't immediately communicate that you understand your dream client's problem. In this episode, I'm sitting down with Eden Lisa, former teacher turned brand strategist and designer, who built and sold a Teachers Pay Teachers business in 2024 and now helps service based founders in the family and education space build brands that actually attract the right people: How Eden went from teaching herself Adobe Illustrator and selling the inspired $2 alpaca craft to running a waitlisted, travel-based branding business, Why branding is about messaging first and visuals second, and the exercise that helps you define your dream human with clarity, and The 12-week content framework built around four key problems that takes the guesswork out of showing up consistently. (You'll want to take notes on this one!) IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN How Eden left teaching mid 2022 after burnout, lockdown, and being told she could no longer share classroom content, and what she built instead Why branding is far more than visuals and how the right messaging signals to dream clients that you truly understand their problem The "dream human" exercise that helps you get specific about who you're speaking to and what they actually need to hear How Eden's 12-week content plan works, built around four key problems with a mix of educational, storytelling, and promotional posts How to navigate imposter syndrome as a founder using a proof list that reminds you how far you've already come Eden's vision for a waitlisted, travel-based business, and what freedom actually looks like when you build it intentionally   LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED Find Eden Lisa on Instagram Eden's 12 Week plan Eden's Business Reboot 3-Pinned Post Free Guide   Send me a DM @JustJuliaChalmers to have a chat if you'd like to know more about making your income dreams become a reality. Ep 33 - From Side Hustle to CEO - Part 3

Join Education Business School or Dm me @JustJuliaChalmers. Build a Brand That Gets Chosen... From Side Hustle to Real Business Part 3.  Most educators building a side hustle are trying to appeal to everyone, but a brand that tries to please everyone ends up pleasing no one. Being chosen means also being not chosen, and that takes bravery.  In this final episode of my three-part series on what separates side hustles from real businesses, I'm breaking down why a strong personal brand is the piece that ties everything together, and what it actually takes to build one that gets you chosen:  Why visibility requires bravery, and why the scrutiny that comes with being seen is a sign you're doing it right, How to identify your niche, your dream human, and your "villain" to build a brand with a clear and compelling point of view, and Why community, collaboration, and ongoing investment are the common traits of every education business that's genuinely growing.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN   Why a brand isn't your logo or your colours, it's what people say about you when you're not in the room How trying to appeal to everyone makes your brand bland, and what to do instead to stand out How to deeply understand your niche through real conversations, and why this research changes everything about your messaging What a brand "villain" is, how to identify yours, and how to take a clear stance without manufacturing drama How AI can help you amplify your voice and stay consistent once your brand has a clear point of view Why the education businesses that are growing all have community, collaboration, and investment in common   LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED  Julia's weekly planning system with Claude: juliachalmers.com/claude Grow your Education Business in Education Business School Instagram @JustJuliaChalmers   Website Mrs Chalmers Cherubs   TPT Mrs Chalmers' Cherubs   ENJOYED THIS EPISODE?  If this episode made something click for you, take a screenshot and share it to your Instagram stories. Ep 32 - From Side Hustle to CEO - Part 2

From Side Hustle to CEO. Using AI to Save Time, Scale Impact, and Protect Your Magic  Most educators are either worried about AI taking over, or they're using it to pull ahead. And right now, the gap between those two groups is growing fast. In this episode, Part Two of my series on what separates side hustles from real businesses, I'm breaking down how I use AI to run a multiple six-figure business in around 15 hours a week, without losing the human magic that makes my work irreplaceable:   Why AI is the transport, not the map, and why that distinction changes everything about how you use it, The practical systems I use week to week to reduce mental load and automate the repetitive stuff, and How to use AI to help your clients get results faster, without replacing the connection that keeps them coming back.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN  Why businesses are splitting into AI worriers and AI winners, and how to make sure you're on the right side How to adopt a CEO mindset that leverages AI without diluting what makes your work distinctly yours The weekly planning system I use with Claude to stay on top of a growing business in fewer hours How automating your podcast-to-email workflow and analysing coaching call transcripts can sharpen your offers and marketing The bigger opportunity most educators are missing.. using AI to help clients get results faster through bots, self-assessments, personalisation, and apps  Why your real protection from AI is your human connection, your community, and your love for your work, and how to start building on that today   LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED  Julia's weekly planning system with Claude: juliachalmers.com/claude Grow your Education Business in Education Business School  Join the next round of the Made for More Mastermind    ENJOYED THIS EPISODE?  If this episode made something click for you, take a screenshot and share it to your Instagram stories. Ep 31 - From Side Hustle to CEO - Part 1

Most educators with a side hustle are trading time for money... but very few have built something that keeps selling while they're at a two day event, picking up their kids, and living their actual life. In this episode, I'm kicking off a three part series on the levers that separate thriving education business owners from those stuck in side hustle mode, and we're starting with digital products. Because they're not dead. Not even close: Why educators are sitting on "magic" they haven't packaged yet, and how to turn it into a product that solves a real problem, What makes a digital product distinctive instead of generic and easily replaceable, and How to connect your products into pathways and automate delivery so your business works without constant manual effort. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN What actually separates a side hustle from a real business, and which side of the line you're currently on Why digital products are far from dead and how sales can keep coming in even when you're completely offline How to identify the unique "magic" you have as an educator and package it into a product with a clearly defined dream customer Why generic, easily replicated products feel redundant to buyers, and what to build instead How connecting your digital products into pathways creates consistency and compounds your income over time  What automating delivery and discovery actually looks like, and why it's the shift that takes you from hustle to freedom Listen to Episode 14 - The Year Where Everything Broke     Send me a DM @JustJuliaChalmers to have a chat if you'd like to know more about making your income dreams become a reality. Ep 30 - Turning on the Income Tap

Turning the Income Tap On. Money Mindset and Cash-Injection Strategies for Educators  Most educators know they want to earn more… but very few have a clear strategy for turning the income tap on when they need to, or a mindset that makes space for money to actually flow. In this episode, I'm diving into the conversation that gets the most engagement in this community… Money.  Whether you're chasing a big picture level shift or you just need a cash injection right now, this one's for you:   How to uncover the skills and offers you already have that could make you an extra $100, $1,000, or $10,000, Why mindset and strategy have to work together, and what happens when you lean too hard on just one, and The practical moves for generating quick cash without building something from scratch.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN  The difference between big-picture money goals and short-term cash need, and why both require a different approach How asking yourself one simple question unlocks income ideas you didn't know you already had What a "freedom figure" and a "f*** yeah figure" are and why knowing both changes how you set income goals The micro habits…like calendar gratitude notifications and tracking every gain that shift your focus from the gap to abundance  How to build a cash-injection offer for your warm audience without starting from zero Why pre-selling before you build is one of the smartest ways to validate demand and reduce risk.     Send me a DM @JustJuliaChalmers to have a chat if you'd like to know more about making your income dreams become a reality. Ep 29 - Locked Out of My First Event

Most people only share the highlight reel, but behind every sold out event is a venue booked further away than expected, a chair-count panic, and a smart-door that had other ideas. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on my first Perth event... the wins that surprised me, the wobbles that tested me, and the mindset that got me through all of it: Why I missed a podcast episode and why that was actually the right call, The moments from the day that reminded me why live, in room connection is something I want to keep building, and How I handled everything from delayed access codes to negative commentary on social media, and came out the other side. In this episode you'll learn: The "rubber vs glass balls" framework for deciding what to drop when life and business collide Why seeing attendees define their dream lives in the same room is something no online event can replicate  How to recognise that your everyday knowledge, like business ecosystems and using AI tools like Claude, isn't common knowledge at all  What it means to choose integrity over a standard high-ticket pitch, and how to tell the difference between alignment and fear The five wobbles from the day (venue, access codes, chairs, a smart-door, and social media) and the contingency mindset that handled every one of them How to claim a new identity in your business, and why calling yourself someone who runs events matters more than you think Thank you to everyone who attended the event!
