    Hunting in Coastal South Carolina: Public Land, Private Access & Finding Your Way In EP#24 We know our Coastal South Carolina area is always depicted with beaches, golf courses, palm trees and hi-rise condos. But there is another equally important part of our landscape and ecosystem — woods, rivers, swamps, fields, timberland, wildlife, and a strong outdoor culture that includes hunting. Between Horry and Georgetown Counties, there are roughly 1.25 million acres of land. Of course, not all of that land is huntable. But it helps explain why outdoor recreation is a very meaningful part of life for many people in this region. Those who've hunted elsewhere might hear about this "land of opportunity" in Coastal South Carolina, but figuring out how to identify a respectful path into a world that likely runs on relationships and trust can be a learning process. Where can you hunt? Do you need private land? What is a Wildlife Management Area? In this episode of Coasting, Celia talks with Matt Mitchell, Chief of Operations with The Corban Collective, about hunting in coastal South Carolina. Matt has hunted deer, dove, duck, alligator, bear, wild hogs, and more. He has also been involved in invasive species control, including wild hog work connected to the Waccamaw Refuge. Celia brings the curious non-hunter perspective while guest co-interviewer Rob Woodul joins the conversation as someone who hunts and has introduced his daughter to the outdoors. His story is one of finding home in a place he did not grow up, but one that helped shape the life he is building now. G.K.’s story starts in Conway. A Conway native, former Conway High standout, and member of Coastal Carolina’s 2016 College World Series championship team, he knew early that he wanted to play baseball at Coastal. After playing professionally, he returned home, started a business, and continues to speak with deep pride about the town he loves and what Conway has become. Then, in the second segment, Celia talks with Mariah Faith, American Idol finalist and singer-songwriter, about growing up in Conway, being encouraged by a teacher who saw something special in her, feeling embraced by the community during and after American Idol, and continuing to call Conway home even while creating and collaborating in Nashville.     Loris, SC: Big Bog Energy! Chicken Bog, Growth and Small-Town Flavor EP#21

    Loris, South Carolina may be one of those places people have heard of, driven through, or only recently discovered when they realized their new home address says “Loris.” But this small town in northern Horry County has a story worth knowing. In this episode of Coasting, Celia heads to Loris for a conversation about railroad roots, small-town pride, major growth, and one very important local dish: chicken bog.
