Journalism is at a crossroads. Can independent journalists and content creators save it? Liz Kelly Nelson, Founder of Project C, joins Natalie to discuss this and more! As public trust in journalism continues to erode at the same time AI reshapes the information landscape, and legacy newsrooms collapse, one question matters more than ever: Who do we trust to tell us the “truth?” There was a time when Americans may have disagreed on politics, policy, or ideology, but largely agreed on one thing: facts mattered. But things have changed. Misinformation is spreading faster than ethical, evidence-backed reporting. Public trust in the media has fallen to historic lows. Local newspapers are disappearing, leaving communities without watchdogs to hold those in power accountable. At the same time, generative AI is fundamentally changing how information is created, distributed and consumed, often blurring the line between what’s authentic and what’s artificially created. Meanwhile, journalists are facing mounting pressure from every direction. Newsrooms continue to shrink through layoffs and closures and billionaires and corporate consolidation are reshaping the media landscape. Reporters are increasingly targeted for doing their jobs, and debates over free speech, censorship and platform algorithms have made the information ecosystem even more fractured. Tired? Me too. So where does journalism go from here? Across the country, independent journalists are building audiences on platforms like Substack, YouTube and podcasts, creating new ways to report stories, connect with communities and sustain their work outside traditional news organizations. But independence comes with its own set of issues. Can these new models provide the accountability and editorial rigor that journalism requires? Can creators build businesses without compromising their reporting? And perhaps most importantly, can independent media help restore public trust? Today’s Facts Over Fear guest, Liz Kelly Nelson, founder of Project C, joins me to discuss this and more. Project C is an initiative dedicated to helping independent journalists build sustainable businesses while strengthening the communities they serve. Liz has spent years thinking about where journalism is headed, and not just as an industry, but as a public service. Our conversation explores some of the biggest challenges facing journalism today: • Why legacy media is struggling and whether the industry’s decline was inevitable. • How misinformation and political polarization have reshaped public trust. • The explosive growth of independent journalism and what it means for the future. • How AI could both support independent reporting and undermine public confidence. • Why today’s journalists increasingly need to be entrepreneurs, marketers and community builders, not just reporters. • What happens to democracy when local journalism disappears. • And what gives Liz hope that journalism can emerge stronger than before. If you’ve ever wondered where journalism is headed, or why it feels so different than it did just a decade ago, this episode is for you. I’d love to hear from you in the comments: Do you trust the news more, less or differently than you did five years ago? And where do you turn for information you believe?
