    She's Sailing Solo Around the World on a 27-Foot Boat

    She's halfway through a solo circumnavigation on a 27-foot Grinde, with no fridge, no radar, no autopilot, and a wind instrument that's been broken for most of the trip. In this episode we talk to Holly of Wind Hippie Sailing about how she bought her boat Gecko with a broken arm and no sailing budget, refit it herself in a Maine barn, and has been sailing solo since 2018 with little more than a phone, a Garmin inReach, and her parents' weather updates. We cover what she actually uses for navigation and communication at sea, how she manages sleep on long solo passages including a 41-day Panama to Marquesas crossing, what she's learned about sailing without a working engine, and the advice she'd give anyone waiting to feel "ready" before they go cruising.     Seakeeper: Beyond the Gyro

    Does a $17,000 gyroscope actually make sense on a 23-foot center console? I put that question straight to Seakeeper. I'm Maryline Bossar, co-founder of Current Yachts, and on this episode of Full Displacement I sat down with Kelsey Barrett, Seakeeper's Director of Brand and Creative, to get the real answers: how the gyro actually works, what it costs at every size, what it costs to refit and maintain, what to check before buying a used boat that has one, and the newer product most boaters haven't heard of yet: Seakeeper Ride. Stabilization used to be something only a 60-foot yacht had. Seakeeper built that market from a garage in Solomons, Maryland, starting in 2002, and now it's standard on more than 300 boat brands. We get into how they got there, what nearly killed the idea during the 2008 recession, and why the company's own advice is: don't buy the boat until you understand where it's going.     The yacht commission lawsuit isn't over. It just got bigger.

    Most boat sellers pay 10% to sell their boat and never ask where that number came from. Four sellers are now asking a federal court, and last month the case they brought came back from the brink twice the size it started. We are Maryline Bossar and Amanda Haley, the principals at Current Yachts, a licensed yacht brokerage in the state of Florida. In this episode we sit down with antitrust law expert Hannibal Travis, Professor of Law at FIU College of Law and a nearly 30 year antitrust lawyer and scholar, to read the amended complaint in the yacht brokerage commission class action and explain, in plain language: what it says and how industry practices are being challenged and what it means for buyers, sellers, and brokers. IMPORTANT: Everything discussed in this episode comes from public court filings. All allegations are unproven and none of them have been decided by a court. Nothing here is legal advice. Current Yachts is referenced in the latest filing. We are not a defendant. We collaborate with yacht brokers every day, we participate in the MLS platforms, and we built our firm specifically to move away from several of the practices this case is about. We use a set fee rather than a percentage commission, we let sellers decide what co broker compensation they offer instead of mandating it, and we use a buyer representation agreement so a buyer knows exactly who is working for them.
