How Movement Helps Us Process, Regulate, and Heal

What if movement could do more than make your body stronger? Anchored Mind counselor Kelley Beecham joins Michael for a deeply personal conversation about the connection between movement and mental health. Kelley shares how fitness first became something relational, a way to spend time with friends, before taking on an entirely different role after a significant loss. In the midst of grief, when so much felt stuck in her mind and body, stepping toward a yoga mat or picking up weights gave her another way to process what she was carrying. Together, Kelley and Michael explore what can happen in our brains and bodies when we move, from energy, focus, and emotional regulation to the way we show up in our relationships. Michael also shares his own experience with ADHD, including the shame he once carried around his diagnosis and the role movement has played in helping him better understand and work with his brain. Exercise isn't a replacement for medication or counseling, but it can be a powerful part of caring for our mental health. If there's one thing to take away from this conversation, it's this: movement has to work FOR you. If it's not enjoyable, it's not sustainable. Kelley and Michael talk about starting small, paying attention to what your mind and body actually need, letting those needs change through different seasons of life, and reframing taking care of yourself as something that benefits the people you love, too. Kelley brings so much wisdom and relatability to this conversation, including answering some rapid-fire questions at the end you won't want to miss. Whether movement is already part of your rhythm or you're trying to figure out where to begin, this episode offers a whole new way to think about why we move.

Your Health Is More Connected Than You Think

What if feeling better isn't about finding one more solution, but understanding how all the pieces work together? Season 2 of the Anchored Mind Podcast begins from a brand-new space and with an expanded vision for what whole-person care can look like. Michael and Kristen reflect on Season 1, share what's ahead for Season 2, and talk about the idea at the center of it all: integration. Our mental health, physical health, relationships, nutrition, movement, and recovery aren’t meant to exist in isolation, and caring for ourselves shouldn't either. Then, they sit down with Precision Medicine Physician Dr. Christiana Paul for a fascinating conversation about longevity, precision medicine, and what it looks like to understand your health beyond simply putting out the latest fire. They explore why a nagging symptom or ongoing discomfort can be worth paying attention to, how seemingly separate systems in the body are deeply interconnected, and why understanding your individual biology, history, and patterns can provide a much clearer picture of what you need. Dr. Paul also shares why time, relationship, and coordination are so important to her approach to care, and how she helps people zoom out from a single symptom to better understand what's happening across the whole body. If you've ever felt stuck, wondered whether something you're experiencing is really “normal,” or wanted to understand your health on a deeper level, this conversation is a great place to start. Season 2 is all about bringing trusted experts and different areas of wellness into the same conversation. And we're just getting started!
