How Modern R&B Has Drifted Away From The Church

Modern R&B didn't just appear out of nowhere. Long before today's biggest artists, the Black church shaped the sound, emotion, and vocal traditions that would define generations of R&B. From Aretha Franklin and James Brown to Michael Jackson, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, Frank Ocean, and beyond, gospel music left fingerprints all over the genre. But as fewer Black Americans grow up in church, a new question emerges: What happens to R&B when its original foundation becomes less central to Black life? In this episode of The Breakdown, Jordi Polycarpe traces the evolution of modern R&B through the Great Migration, gospel music, soul, the church, and the artists who transformed those traditions into one of the world's most influential genres.
