    Would You Sleep in a Lifesize Dog Bed?

    Would you spend $700 on a toaster that only makes two slices of bread? What about $680 on a Gucci dog bowl? Or hire your own paparazzi just to make strangers think you're famous? Apparently, people pay for these things. And some start to sound surprisingly reasonable. We're Rachel and Stephen Scroggins, the married hosts of Resurface Podcast. In Episode 45, we're putting our judgment to the test. First, we play Guess the Price, featuring a potato sent through the mail, a human-sized dog bed, a designer pet bowl, and a Dolce & Gabbana toaster. We try to guess what they cost and why anyone would buy them. Then we discover businesses offering professional line sitters, fake paparazzi, scent marketing, mermaid entertainers, and even DNA testing to identify whose dog left a mess. Finally, we ask what we'd pay to outsource in our own lives: phone calls, laundry, chores, car maintenance, errands, technology problems, or our calendar. But we can only choose two. We also catch up on life, including our housing situation, our dogs, and why we're selling our camera to upgrade our microphones. Somewhere along the way, Stephen worries about offending artificial intelligence, and our conversation takes a few unexpected turns.     We Invited ChatGPT to Co-Host Our Podcast

    We invited ChatGPT to co-host our podcast and gave it one job: try to start an argument between us. It roasted both of us, called out our ridiculous excuses, and somehow ended up playing couples therapist. We're Rachel and Stephen Scroggins, the married hosts of Resurface Podcast, and for Episode 44, we decided to let artificial intelligence join the conversation. Armed with everything ChatGPT already knows about us (which is probably far too much), we challenged it to find something we could actually disagree about. It didn't hold back. From who's really late when we're leaving the house, to stealing each other's food, to Rachel's habit of interrupting Stephen's stories, ChatGPT had plenty to say. It delivered some surprisingly good insults, assigned winners, and occasionally made us question why we'd invited it in the first place. But the most interesting part wasn't something we planned. Without us telling ChatGPT which disagreement to pursue, it brought up a household issue that we genuinely don't see eye to eye on. What started as another round of roasting eventually turned into an impromptu session of AI couples therapy. And, much to our surprise, some of its advice wasn't half bad. So, can ChatGPT actually cause an argument between a husband and wife? Is AI any good at understanding marriage? And should we ever let it co-host another episode? You'll have to tell us.     Special Needs Parents React to Toy Story 5 | Episode 43

    Toy Story 5 takes on kids' screen time, technology, and imaginative play. But what happens when a screen isn't just entertainment, but something a child with disabilities genuinely needs? In Episode 43 of Resurface Podcast, Rachel and Stephen react to Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5 and its surprisingly complicated message about children, tablets, friendship, and growing up. As parents of three children, including a five-year-old daughter with significant disabilities, we have a different perspective on the screen-time debate. We talk about the struggle to balance imaginative play with technology, the changes we've noticed in our own children when screens are limited, and the reality of relying on devices more than we'd like. For our daughter Mila, screen time has sometimes been a necessity during overwhelming seasons of caregiving. We've also watched technology help her learn, develop skills, and participate in activities that might otherwise be inaccessible. That brings us to a side of the screen-time conversation that often gets overlooked: disability, accessibility, and inclusion. What does it mean when a tablet makes it possible for a child to sit through a doctor's appointment, visit a restaurant, or participate in the community? And what happens when the world expects children with invisible disabilities to adapt to environments that aren't designed for them? We don't have all the answers. We're trying to find a better balance ourselves.     I Graded My Parenting as a Mom | Internet Mom Advice

    How does a real mom measure up against the internet’s parenting standards? Rachel is finding out the hard way. In Episode 42 of Resurface, Rachel turns online parenting advice into an Internet Mom Report Card and grades herself on everything the internet says a good mom is apparently supposed to do: perfect morning routines, creative lunches, developmental activities, enrichment, screen-time limits, gentle parenting, an organized home, quality family time, Pinterest-worthy memories, and more. Somehow this involves Fortnite raising a child, questionable lunch expectations, toy rotation, bribery, yelling, screen-time loopholes, secretly burying children's artwork in the trash, and the increasingly important question: where exactly are parents supposed to find the time to do all of this? This isn't a parenting-advice episode. It's a parenting comedy about what happens when you stack every supposedly reasonable parenting standard on top of every other supposedly reasonable parenting standard and expect one actual human mother to meet all of them. Rachel does surprisingly well in a few categories. She fails spectacularly in others. Then everything gets added up for the final Internet Mom Report Card.     The Postpartum Mental Illness No One Is Talking About | Postpartum OCD | Episode 41

    Rachel lived with severe OCD during pregnancy, after childbirth, after pregnancy loss, and for years without knowing what it was. In Episode 41, Rachel shares her experience with postpartum and perinatal OCD, intrusive thoughts, contamination OCD, and the fear of telling anyone what was happening inside her head. Stephen knew about these thoughts at the time, but after having a stroke at 37, he no longer remembers parts of that period — so some of what Rachel tells him now feels almost new. Rachel traces her OCD from childhood intrusive thoughts to contamination fears during pregnancy with Ariana, then to darker intrusive thoughts after becoming a mother. She explains why she once believed the devil was attacking her, what happened when she finally told Stephen, and how the OCD returned severely after miscarriage and pregnancy loss. The conversation also addresses why people with perinatal OCD may be afraid to tell a doctor or psychiatrist, including fears about being judged or having a child taken away. Later, Rachel and Stephen discuss harm OCD, unwanted sexual intrusive thoughts, and pedophilia-themed OCD. Some of the themes discussed were part of Rachel's experience and some were not. Stephen uses a hit-and-run OCD example to explain the cycle of checking, Googling, replaying events, monitoring reactions, and seeking reassurance — and why OCD's demand for certainty is never fully satisfied. They also discuss postpartum OCD versus postpartum psychosis, why a podcast cannot diagnose what someone's thoughts mean, and OCD recovery. Rachel says her OCD today is in 99.9% remission. This episode grew out of the larger maternal and postpartum mental health conversation surrounding the Lindsay Clancy case, but it is not an analysis of her case.     Would You Save Your Spouse or the Dog? | Married Couple Comedy

    Would you save your spouse or the dog if your house were on fire? In Episode 39, Rachel and Stephen play “Wives or Husbands,” a game built around marriage hypothetical questions and which spouse is more likely to do what. It begins with familiar arguments about driving, directions, man flu, mental load, selective hearing, and passive-aggressive sighing. Then the questions become considerably less reasonable. The dog, hamster, baby books, and children all make Rachel’s fire-rescue list. When she asks whether Stephen would save her, a normal relationship question becomes a serious discussion about a charred wife, skin grafts, and whether Rachel was already beyond saving. They also uncover a five-year family secret. Rachel ran out of gas after insisting that zero miles did not mean empty, called AAA instead of Stephen, and recruited the children to make sure he never discovered she had been wrong.
