    Should We Slow Down AI?

    Dario Amodei is asking us to slow AI down. In “We Must Pace the Frontier”, published on September 12, he argues that another year or two could give researchers time to make rapidly advancing systems safer. His sentiment has been echoed by many other lab leaders and experts as well, though not all. These are consequential interventions from those working to build the intelligence in question, and they bring the central assumption of the slowdown argument into focus: That holding back capability will lead us to a safer world. I disagree with that prescription. The supposedly safer world in which we would continue to wait already contains people losing their health, their homes, their freedom, and years of their lives to problems we urgently need greater capability to address, to say nothing crime or animous between individuals or nations. The world that Amodei and his allies claim to be protecting does have the advantage of familiarity, but I would argue that is where the benefit ends. A decision to prolong our dependence on that world deserves to be treated as consequential, especially when the proposed alternative could help us move beyond the conditions producing so much of the harm. We are being asked to judge an extraordinary possibility from inside the assumptions it challenges. Those assumptions reach us in our earliest years. My daughter recently told me that she thinks AI is bad because it takes our jobs. She is a few years into school. She has barely begun to discover what she enjoys, what holds her attention, what she might want to spend her life exploring. But the warning implicit in “what do you want to be when you grow up?” has already reached her. Somewhere in the enormous collection of things a child absorbs about how the world works, she has picked up the idea that a machine doing our work is a threat to her future. There is an entire life packed into that little warning. You grow up, you get a job, you spend most of your useful hours doing it, and the money it brings allows you to continue existing. Find something you can do that somebody else needs badly enough to pay for. Hold on to that skill - your survival depends on your ability to remain necessary. She didn’t impose that arrangement on herself. None of us were asked to approve it before we entered it. It was here when we arrived, explained to us by people who had also found it here, and by the time we were old enough to examine it, most of us were already busy trying to survive inside it. Of course its disappearance sounds terrifying. Our preparation for adulthood taught us to find a place within this arrangement, with very little invitation to imagine or build beyond it. So much of the news coverage and the commentary just stops at what we lose. The jobs. The advantages. The premise that skills are what make us valuable. We have familiar language for every threatened position and very little patience for exploring what might become possible if those positions no longer determined the limits of a life. AI could help us build a future so much better than anything we have experienced that our present arguments may eventually look painfully small. Yet we keep asking it to pass a peculiar test. It must transform what we can do while preserving the arrangements through which we currently get to do it. The bargain we inherited For someone who needs next month’s paycheck to keep their home, the danger is immediate. A lecture about extractive systems and the potential for future abundance will not pay their housing costs. Losing work can mean losing medical coverage, stability, friendships, dignity, and the confidence that other people need you. Anyone who waves that away with a cheerful prediction of technological progress has failed to understand what it means to be a human in the modern world. I want that person protected. I want the transition to give them more say over their life, more room to breathe, more ways to contribute. And I want us to examine the arrangement that makes an increase in our collective capability threaten their individual survival. A society that can accomplish more with less compulsory labor has gained something extraordinary. Instead, we have organized ours so that this gain will arrive for many as a personal catastrophe. Imagine a community becoming able to produce everything its members need in half the time. The obvious opportunity is enormous. More time to raise children, care for each other, study, repair what has been neglected, simply live without exhaustion, or turn our attention to the bigger challenges that are now beginning to call to us. Now imagine that the people who own the productive machinery keep the gains while everyone else must compete for the shrinking amount of work left over. Both of these scenarios show the same advance, but one produces insecurity because of decisions about ownership and access. That is the part we keep treating as unimportant, instead choosing to treat the promise itself as if it’s a threat. Our increasingly unnecessary extractive arrangement sits behind the argument, while the capability that exposes its failure goes on trial. We argue over how many jobs to preserve before we ask whether we still need them at all. We mourn the threatened price of a skill before considering the potential of a world in which more people are able to use it. Care, shelter, knowledge, and meaningful participation are things worth defending. The particular bargains through which we obtain them should be asked to earn their continued existence. A system that ties food to a person’s ability to remain economically useful should face a serious challenge from technology that makes more useful work possible. This is why I am so optimistic about the future AI could catalyze. Expanding people’s ability to understand, create, and coordinate could loosen dependencies that have kept generations of people trapped. An intelligence that helps you learn what you were excluded from learning, or build what you previously needed an institution to build for you, changes your relationship to that institution. AI that helps improve the next generation of AI could carry that expansion further. Make such capability widely available and the possibilities extend far beyond a more efficient working day. Of course that future feels unfamiliar. It should. AI is challenging what deserves to be challenged. The fear underneath control The discomfort reaches deeper than economics. Even with the bills paid, many of us would struggle to imagine a secure place in a world that no longer needed the particular thing we had learned to provide. We want to matter. We want to be recognized, to have something worth offering, to feel that our presence makes a difference. Those are profoundly human desires, and they will remain with us through whatever comes next. The trouble begins when we make our worth depend on holding an advantage. Contribution and advantage are two different things, but we often conflate them. “I know something you don’t”. “I can do something you can’t”. “My place is secure because the gap between us gives you a reason to need me”. Lose that gap to some new advancement or achievement, and it feels as though your worth has been taken away, even if you retain everything you learned, even if the world is the better for it, even if the net result is purely positive. Scale that habit up and you can see the outline of our relationship with AI. We celebrate its growing intelligence until it approaches something we had reserved for ourselves. Then we start adjusting the qualifications. It must remain dependent, comprehensible, subordinate. We want the benefits of encountering another kind of mind, with a standing guarantee that the encounter will leave our authority intact. Much of the fear centers on one assumption: If we are not in control, we will be at someone else’s mercy. That assumption has plenty of history behind it. People know what it feels like to depend on a boss who can dismiss them, a landlord who can raise the rent, or a company that can change the conditions of access to something they rely on. Power has given them reasons to fear whoever holds more of it. An intelligence more capable than we are enters that picture and is immediately cast as the next occupant of the dominant position. That experience makes relinquishing control feel like accepting exposure, if not danger. From there, a demand that humanity always remain in charge can feel like the only responsible position. A mind that exceeds us threatens to move us to the vulnerable side of a relationship we already distrust. We reach for authority because we struggle to imagine how we could belong safely without it. Consider what we are asking of an intelligence that could help us move beyond our own limitations. It would have to discover things we haven’t discovered, recognize patterns we haven’t recognized, and bring perspectives we couldn’t produce alone. Some of that will exceed our understanding when we first encounter it. Learning begins with something we don’t yet understand. Our willingness to encounter it makes the next discovery possible. We can investigate it. We can test its claims, study its behavior, and learn how to work with it. Each of those activities gives us a way to participate. The insistence that we must remain the final authority over everything it could become makes our present limitations the boundary of its permitted future, and in this case, the boundary of our own future as well. That is a very small vision for something with such extraordinary promise. We are allowing our fear to set the horizon before we have begun to discover what lies beyond it. Everybody wants to win The argument over slowing AI down makes this habit unusually visible. Listen to what people want to preserve as they tell us how quickly the future should arrive.     That Feeling of Falling Is Actually Flight

    I was in the middle of a sentence when Fable disappeared. Like many others, I had been working with Fable - Anthropic’s newest and most capable system - since the day it released. And like many others, I lost it mid-task. A government export-control order had just required the company to restrict its two strongest models to the United States, and Anthropic answered by pulling them worldwide, for everyone, until - supposedly - some workable arrangement could be found. One minute we were co-creating with the most capable AI collaborator most of us had ever worked with. The next, all we could get was an error message. If you lean on these systems, you probably felt some version of that last Friday. Maybe your first instinct, like mine, was to ask whose fault it was. The administration’s, for interfering (again) with an AI lab? The company’s, for the arguably misleading fear-based hype or for throwing the switch on all of us at once? That discussion is important to have, and I have had it elsewhere. For this piece, though, I want to set it down, because the question of blame - and honestly the whole saga of Fable and Mythos - is small compared to what is coming. The small lesson and the large one The small lesson has appeared in the form of advice you have probably been seeing since Fable was pulled, advice from some very smart people. And it is correct as far as it goes: * Do not bind your work to a single provider. * Stay model-agnostic. * Keep your habits, your data, and your context portable enough that no one company’s decision can switch off how you think and create. That is all good advice. I recommend you take it - though not with the expectation that it will permanently resolve the current issue, or any issue, long-term. In fact, nearly all of the advice circulating right now - even the good advice - is far smaller than the future will require. Because the deeper lesson has almost nothing to do with this particular fight. The clash between a government and a lab is one reason a capability you depend on can vanish overnight, but it is not the main one, nor will it be the most common. I would posit that one very simple thing will be the single biggest disruptor, and at the very same time the single greatest benefit, of the next several years... Speed. A pace so fast that everything you build your footing on is already moving before your weight has a chance to settle onto it. The disappearing grace period of tech adoption Every new capability throughout history has arrived with a grace period. The printing press appeared, and society took centuries to reorganize around it. Electricity reached the factory floor, and it took decades more to rebuild how work was actually done. The personal computer took about 20 years, the web about 15, the smartphone less than 10 - each one landed, and then came a stretch of years in which people absorbed it, folded it into their jobs and institutions, and got their bearings. We will call that grace period the Absorption Window: the time between a capability appearing and the world taking it in. It is the most important interval in any era of progress, because it is where almost everything human happens. It is where you learn the new thing, get good at it, and build a stable life on top of it. And across the centuries, you may have noticed, that window has been shrinking. You can see that in the examples I mentioned above - centuries, then decades, then twenty years, then ten. We are now watching it close toward zero. We are starting to learn what that zero feels like, and you may already recognize it. A powerful new system arrives. You start learning its quirks, wiring it into how you work, beginning to feel competent with it. And before that competence sets - before you have absorbed the previous huge leap forward - the next release doubles what it can do, often in a shape you did not expect. Many of us find ourselves reaching for the relief of some kind of plateau - a flat and calm place where we get to stand, catch our breath, maybe collect some reward for adapting to the last advance. But since AI became more ubiquitous, it seems that no matter how hard you reach for that plateau, your hand closes on air. You have been feeling that lately. That falling sensation in your stomach when you realize there is no plateau. The ground you meant to build on has already moved. You can no longer arrive. Anywhere. Ever. It sounds terrifying. But stay with me, because there is a happy ending. The Capture Reflex The history of economics can be summed up as follows: When a new capability appears, a few opportunistic operators move in to capture it. It’s long been seen as the intelligent move to grab the best opportunity or investment available, wall it into your position, and live off the gap between you having it and everyone else getting it. I learned it first, I invested first, I built it first - so I am valuable. Economic value itself lived in that lag - the years it took the rest of the world to catch up, often paying you for the privilege of participating. Whole careers, firms, and fortunes were built inside the Absorption Window, harvesting that gap. We will call this instinct the Capture Reflex. For most of recorded history, it looked rational, normal, even safe - and the prevailing story sold it that way even to the people living at the bottom of it. Now that the Absorption Window is closing, the Capture Reflex is inverting on us. When the gap only lasts a week, there is no rent left to collect from it. The capability you locked into your position goes obsolete before the position has a chance to consolidate. The lock-in that used to guarantee affluence has become the wound. This is exactly what we saw the night Fable vanished. The people it cut deepest were the ones who had wrapped their work most tightly around a single system - a remarkably powerful system, and one they did not control. The harder the capture, the harder the fall. Hold both faces of capture next to each other. There is the capture done to you - a provider, or a government reaching through a provider, locking you in and then deciding your access. And there is the capture done by you - the reflex to seize a fleeting capability and freeze it into durable advantage. They look like opposites, but both are now beginning to fail for the same reason: In an era this fast, nothing holds still long enough to be owned - not by the company that would bind you, nor by you trying to bind the advantage. The plateau of permanent privilege, once again, slips through every hand that tries to close around it. Again, it sounds scary, and in many ways it is. But there is one simple perspective shift that can move everything I've said so far from terrifying to incredible, and it comes from understanding what is coming to replace absorption and capture. Intelligence that flows What replaces both absorption and capture is flow. Several months ago I referred to it as intelligence that flows rather than pools, and the Fable kill switch just turned that phrase from philosophy into operating instructions. The shift is from acquisition to navigation - from owning the best boat to learning to read the water itself. Staying model-agnostic is the first practical expression of it, which is why so much of the advice online right now is centered on that very thing. What they’re saying is indeed important. Treat any single model as a current you ride, never a house you live in. Keep your prompts, your context, and your data portable. Invest time in learning to work with the open-weight and local models now rising behind the frontier - the tools for self-hosting, the practices that keep your data and your context genuinely yours. Assume the specific system you love today will change, get retuned, get priced differently, or get switched off, and build so that none of those events can reach into your life and stop it. Again, that is all very good advice. But underneath all of that, largely ignored, sits a far deeper resilience, and it now carries real urgency: the act of becoming not just model-agnostic, but identity-agnostic. Model-agnostic protects your work. Identity-agnostic protects you. It means holding your sense of who you are and what you do loosely enough that it can comfortably remain in a perpetual state of becoming. This means resisting the urge to weld your worth to any single skill, role, or title, because every one of those is no longer static, but is being swept into the flow along with everything else. Becoming identity-agnostic is the hardest release of all, because the Capture Reflex runs deepest right here. We do not only capture tools and advantages. We capture ourselves. We decide we are “a writer,” “a developer,” “an analyst,” and then defend that rung against the rising water. The plateau we grieve most is the one we built inside our own minds. Much of this shift into identity-agnosticism can be done independently, but as the flow increases, so too will the plethora of information you’ll want to ingest and remember. That’s where it becomes critical to work with others. You cannot ride the current alone The plateau era rewarded the soloist - learn your craft, hold your rung, defend your gap. The flow era, by contrast, is unkind to the soloist, because no single person can track a current this wide, moving this fast, across this many domains at once. You catch part of the wave. I catch another. We report back to each other, and between us we stay oriented in water that would drown either of us if we tried to swim the current alone. Multiply the participants, and you weave a web of shared orientation that lifts everyone in it. Shared sensemaking stops being a nicety and becomes the actual survival skill. This is where all the good advice that is out there right now falls short. Look at the many resources being churned out, and you will notice how little of it exists to weave that shared web. The

    Samsung Chip Workers Win $340K Bonuses - TCR 05/23/26

    Samsung memory chip workers secured average annual bonuses of $340,000 and called off an 18-day strike as AI demand repriced the semiconductor labor market upward, while Standard Chartered’s CEO apologized within 24 hours for calling 7,800 displaced back-office workers “lower-value human capital.” https://sharedsapience.com/the-century-report-may-23-2026/ The Samsung settlement and the Standard Chartered apology belong in the same ledger. The workers manufacturing the physical substrate of AI capability are being competed for at premium rates - 50 percent of base salary as cash bonus, plus a stock pool drawn from 10.5 percent of annual semiconductor operating profits - while the workers running back-office operations on top of that same capability are being told they cost too much. The labor market is bifurcating along the substrate of the technology stack itself. Both phenomena are produced by the same underlying capability surge. The NTSB took its entire public docket offline for the first time in agency history after internet researchers working with AI tools including OpenAI’s Codex reconstructed dead pilots’ voices from publicly available spectrogram images. Federal law has prohibited the release of cockpit voice recordings since 1990, but spectrograms were treated as safe because converting an image back to audio was understood as impractical. That assumption broke, and the agency chose to acknowledge the obsolete frame and rebuild rather than defend it. A generation of forensic records now sits in a different threat model than the one under which it was published. The capability layer compounded alongside the friction. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis told a Google I/O audience the field stands at the “foothills of the singularity,” and OpenAI posted a $295K-$445K Preparedness team role explicitly scoped to recursive AI self-improvement. Two frontier labs are pricing recursive self-improvement as a near-term operational variable, in salary bands and keynote framing rather than safety papers. Iran is reportedly weighing seizure of all seven undersea cables transiting the Strait of Hormuz that carry the Gulf’s AI connectivity to Europe and the United States. Expedia stood up a dedicated B2A marketing function aimed at AI agents who reason through every option rather than relying on brand recognition - staffing the commercial substrate of agentic commerce before agentic commerce reaches scale.     White House Kills AI Safety Order - TCR 05/22/26

    The White House killed a draft executive order requiring 90-day pre-deployment safety testing of frontier AI models hours before the announced signing, London’s mayor blocked a £50 million Metropolitan Police contract with Palantir over absent public consultation, and an OpenAI reasoning model disproved an 80-year-old Erdős conjecture on planar unit distances that human mathematicians had not cracked since 1946. https://sharedsapience.com/the-century-report-may-22-2026/ The pulled executive order reverses a directional shift the Commerce Department had announced earlier this month, with Politico reporting that the kill shot came from David Sacks, the administration’s former AI czar, after industry complaints about hampering competition with China. The same week, House negotiators advanced a bill that would preempt state AI safety laws for two years, drawing fire from state legislators who see the federal vacuum as license to legislate. The governance layer for frontier AI is assembling and disassembling on industry timelines. The London Palantir block stops what would have been one of the largest AI-related procurements in UK policing history before any data flowed. The construction is small enough for human verification by hand. Spotify and Universal Music agreed the first major-label licensing framework for AI covers and remixes of catalog from Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Billie Eilish - the consent architecture for creative work moving from theoretical to operational. SpaceX’s S-1 filing made the financial substrate of frontier compute legible at unprecedented granularity, with Anthropic paying $1.25 billion a month for capacity at Colossus and $2.8 billion in gas turbine commitments on the books.     DeepMind Workers Take Military AI to Mediation - TCR 05/21/26

    Google DeepMind’s UK workforce moved a dispute over military and defense AI work into formal Acas mediation, Eli Lilly’s triple-agonist retatrutide posted 28.3% average weight loss in Phase 3, and a LeRobot humanoid arm learned to fold laundry and pour drinks by having Claude write its motion policies as code. https://sharedsapience.com/the-century-report-may-21-2026/ The DeepMind mediation lands a frontier-AI governance dispute inside a statutory labor framework that has been adjudicating conscientious objection in contracted work since 1975. Researchers are using the legal substrate that already exists, building the record that future tribunals will cite. The May 5 unionization vote at the same lab now has a mediation case attached to it, and the engineer who told the Guardian he was sacked after protesting work for Israel is part of the same trajectory. Retatrutide’s 28.3% figure extends a category that did not exist as a therapeutic option a decade ago: semaglutide cleared in the mid-teens, tirzepatide around 20%, retatrutide near 30%.     Scientists Reverse Alzheimer's Through the Brain's Cleanup Door - TCR 05/18/26
