Surviving Post-Combat Darkness: Beating PTSD, Addiction, and Writing 'Moon Child'

In this episode we sit down with Anthony Dyer, retired U.S. Air Force Special Missions Aviator and author of 'Moon Child.' We discuss Anthony's upbringing in Sylva, North Carolina, his military career, the impact of 9/11, and the emotional toll of combat. Anthony shares his journey of writing as a cathartic process to cope with his experiences and the importance of close air support in military operations. He offers advice for young veterans and reflects on the significance of fatherhood and personal growth. About Anthony Dyer: Anthony Dyer hails from the small Appalachian town of Sylva, North Carolina and served in our military for over 20 years. Enlisting in July 2000, Dyer’s extensive military career began as a weapons loader on F-15E Strike Eagles before he realized his goal of becoming a Special Missions Aviator on the AC-130H Spectre gunship. Driven by a desire to leave a lasting impact after 9/11, he deployed to combat zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, and East Africa with the 16th Special Operations Squadron, where he provided critical close air support and participated in high-stakes rescue missions. Dyer’s debut book, Moon Child is a memoir that bridges his Appalachian upbringing with his intense life in special operations. Born from a therapeutic need to process the "silence that followed" his service, the book explores themes of trauma, addiction, and the search for identity beyond the uniform. His work serves as a call to break the stigma around mental health for veterans and others seeking redemption. Salty's Live Music: Independent Artist Lily Vakili on Music-Life Balance, Album Release & Tour Plans

In this episode we sit down with independent artist Lily Vakili, who shares her multifaceted journey from being an attorney to pursuing her passion for music. Lily discusses the profound impact of her family on her songwriting and artistic expression.  We go deep into the challenges of balancing music with personal responsibilities, the release of her new album 'Oceans of Kansas', and the importance of live music experiences. Lily also reflects on her musical influences and her upcoming East Coast tour, emphasizing the need for genuine connections in the music industry. This episode is proudly sponsored by Band Groupeez, a live music service connecting music lovers with independent musicians and local venues. Access your local music scene now at https://bandgroupeez.com About Lily Vakili: Lily Vakili is an artist defined by her unrelenting curiosity and devotion to storytelling. Born in Honduras and raised across multiple continents, from Thailand to Puerto Rico to Iowa, Vakili has lived a life steeped in diverse cultural textures and human experience. Her journey to music has been unconventional: before taking the stage, she was a dancer, actor, lawyer, and mother. That personal complexity now fuels her art, giving rise to songs that pulse with authenticity and emotional intensity. Over the past decade, Vakili has released five studio albums, each one expanding her boundary-pushing approach to rock and roots music, earning her recognition as a fiercely original voice in the independent music scene. Her latest album, Oceans of Kansas, marks the most intimate and adventurous chapter of her career. The record unfolds like an emotional map, blending blues, balladry, and rock with poetic vulnerability. Inspired by a visit to Kansas’s prehistoric fossil beds, Vakili uses the metaphor of an ancient inland sea to explore memory, transformation, and resilience. Songs like “Okoboji,” “Hold On They Say,” and “One Human Being” showcase her gift for balancing grit with grace, merging raw storytelling with a timeless, human touch. This fall, Vakili brings Oceans of Kansas to life on tour, performing with an ensemble of seasoned musicians whose chemistry elevates her electrifying live shows. To our local Georgia folks- Lily takes the stage at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA, on November 16 2025. With her new album Oceans of Kansas, and current tour Lily’s momentum is building towards a flourishing music career. Check out her music, tour stops and show her some love at the links below! 7. Salty's Live Music: Indie Artist Cat Ridgeway On Songwriting, Live Performances & Collaboration

Salty's Live Music: Indie Artist Cat Ridgeway On Songwriting, Live Performances & Collaboration

On this episode of Salty’s Live Music we had indie artist Cat Ridgeway and guest-host Gina Boykin (Live Music Junkiez) on for an in-depth conversation about independent music and Cat’s journey as an indie artist. Cat shares her path from a young musician to touring artist, discussing her energetic live shows, songwriting process, and the importance of collaboration. Cat reflects on her experiences at music festivals, her family’s influence on her career, and the connections she has made in the industry. Cat emphasizes the significance of melody in music, the challenges of navigating audience expectations, and the necessity of adapting to the challenges of being an independent artist, particularly in the realm of social media. She offers valuable advice for aspiring musicians, encouraging them to stay true to their artistic vision while being open to learning and growth. About Cat Ridgeway: A skilled lyricist and melodist, Ridgeway is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, harmonica, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano, mandolin, and bass - sometimes playing three instruments at once!   Ridgeway, along with the revolving members of her touring band, The Tourists, create a sweaty, energetic, exciting party with each live show. With Sprinter, Ridgeway’s 2025 album release, she draws the listener in as she strives to understand life’s trials and emerge with a better sense of perspective and self. Ridgeway, along with Mike Savino (Kishi Bashi, Tall Tall Trees), played multiple instruments on the album. Mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Foo Fighters) and mixed by Dan Molad of Lucius and Coco (JD McPherson, Here We Go Magic), Sprinter features all-star players including Claude Coleman, Jr. (Ween) and Josiah Wolf (WHY?) on drums, and Adam Schatz (Sylvan Esso, Japanese Breakfast) on sax, among others.   Her first single “Epilogue,” is a stomp and holler-esque punk rock explosion hinging off a recklessly played, overdriven banjo.  Named Orlando’s “Best Singer-Songwriter” three years running and “Best Rock Act” twice by Orlando Weekly, Ridgeway has played many notable stages and festivals (30A Songwriters Festival, Okeechobee Music and Arts Fest, and House of Blues Orlando), supporting and sharing bills with acts like Lucy Dacus, Sylvan Esso, Houndmouth, and Arcade Fire, among others.  With her new album Sprinter, Ridgeway is poised to catapult herself onto the national stage.
