    THE FAKE EXPERT PROBLEM: Can Your Firearms Instructor Explain WHY?

    A certificate can make someone an instructor. It does not automatically make them an expert. One of the most dangerous problems in firearms training is not lack of confidence. It is confidence without deep understanding. Psychologists call it the Illusion of Explanatory Depth: people often believe they understand something far better than they actually do—until they are forced to explain exactly how it works. That should make the firearms industry very uncomfortable. “Grip harder.” “Lean forward.” “Track the dot.” “Control recoil.” “Use biomechanics.” Fine. WHY? What is the actual mechanism? What evidence supports it? What changes when the shooter, equipment, environment, or task changes? And if the instructor cannot explain that without falling back on slogans, tradition, or “that’s how I was taught,” how deep is the knowledge really? In this episode of Tactical Edge: The Valortec Briefing, we take direct aim at shallow expertise, recycled doctrine, certification-driven authority, and instructors who know how to demonstrate a technique but cannot explain the science or reasoning behind it. This is not about knowing everything. It is about knowing the difference between understanding something and merely repeating it. A certificate proves you completed a course.
