The Archetype Effect Podcast

Rosalind Cardinal

Power isn't just about position. It's about how safe you feel to speak, lead, influence and fully inhabit who you are. Hosted by leadership consultant, executive coach and creator of the Women's Leader Archetypes, Rosalind Cardinal, The Archetype Effect explores the hidden psychological patterns shaping women's experience of leadership, work and influence. Through thoughtful conversations on power, organisational politics, leadership psychology, archetypes, the nervous system and Political Intelligence, Ros gives language to experiences many women have felt but rarely been able to explain. This isn't a podcast about becoming a different leader. It's about recognising the invisible forces shaping how you lead—and discovering what becomes possible when power no longer feels like performance. Whether you're leading a team, building a business, navigating organisational politics, coaching others, or stepping into greater influence, each episode offers practical insight grounded in psychology, lived experience and more than three decades of leadership consulting and executive coaching. Together we'll explore: • Women's leadership and authentic power • Organisational politics and Political Intelligence • The Women's Leader Archetypes • Leadership psychology and the nervous system • Confidence, authority and influence • Workplace relationships and difficult conversations • Executive coaching and personal growth Because leadership isn't just about what you do. It's about how it feels to do it. Welcome to The Archetype Effect. Where recognition changes everything.

The Move That Usually Works: Have You Really Tried Everything?

Listening noteThis episode explores the familiar approaches we rely on when navigating workplace challenges, and what happens when those approaches stop producing results. As you listen, consider a situation where you've been putting in more effort without seeing much change. You don't need to find the answer immediately. Sometimes noticing the pattern is the beginning of something different. Episode overviewHave you ever reached the point where you've tried everything to resolve a problem at work, but nothing seems to change? You've had the conversations. Gathered the information. Refined your approach. Perhaps you've even started questioning whether you're the problem. But what if you haven't actually tried everything? What if you've tried everything you would normally think to try? In the opening episode of Season 4 of The Archetype Effect, Ros Cardinal explores a subtle distinction that can change how we navigate difficult workplace situations: the difference between trying harder and trying something genuinely different. Through an illustrative coaching conversation with Sarah, a capable professional struggling to gain support for a workplace proposal, we explore how the strengths that have made us successful can become our default responses when things get difficult. Sarah is analytical, thoughtful and persistent. When her proposal stalls, she does what she's always done well: gathers more evidence, strengthens her argument and anticipates objections. But despite all that effort, nothing moves. As the coaching conversation unfolds, a different possibility emerges. Perhaps the obstacle isn't the quality of Sarah's proposal. Perhaps there are competing priorities, unspoken concerns or decision-making dynamics she hasn't yet understood. The challenge isn't to abandon her strengths. It's to recognise when she's relying on them automatically, and consider what else the situation might require. This is the beginning of developing range: having more than one way to respond, and the awareness to choose deliberately. Because a different approach won't always change the outcome. But it might change what you can see. And sometimes, that's where new possibilities begin. Sarah is a composite character drawn from recurring coaching patterns. Her dialogue is an illustrative scenario, not an actual client recording. What you'll learnWhy the strengths that have made you successful can sometimes limit the possibilities you see.How to recognise when you're trying harder rather than trying something genuinely different. Why several different actions can still be variations of the same underlying approach. How assumptions about workplace decisions can keep us focused on solving the wrong problem. What developing range means, and why it doesn't require abandoning your natural strengths. How to explore alternative approaches while recognising workplace power dynamics and risks.A practical three-question experiment to help you identify and test a different move. Reflection promptsThink about a workplace situation where you've been working hard but making little progress. What approach do you keep returning to, even when it isn't producing results? What assumptions might be shaping how you're interpreting the situation? What might you discover if you approached it with curiosity rather than another attempt to persuade, explain or resolve? What one small, safe experiment could help you see something differently? You don't need to solve the whole problem. The invitation is to recognise the pattern and consider what else might be possible. Companion Field GuideThe Move That Usually Works — Season 4, Episode 1 The companion Field Guide takes you through the episode's practical experiment, with space to identify your usual approach, explore three alternatives, choose a different move and reflect on what you discover. In Episode 2, we'll explore four different orientations to workplace situations, and how recognising our preferences can help us expand the choices available to us. Season 4 Trailer: Political Intelligence, Influence and the Power of Choice

What happens when the way you've always got things done at work stops working? Perhaps you're someone who gathers evidence, anticipates problems, builds relationships or challenges decisions. You've developed ways of navigating workplace situations that have served you well. But what happens when the approach that usually works isn't what the situation needs? In Season 3 of The Archetype Effect, we explored the hidden rules of work — the informal dynamics of power, influence, perception, permission and relationships that shape organisational life. Season 4 takes the next step. Once you can see the terrain, how do you choose how to move through it? What to expect in Season 4Join Ros Cardinal as we explore Political Intelligence — not as office politics, manipulation or learning to play games, but as a way of understanding ourselves, reading organisational situations and expanding the choices available to us. Because developing greater influence doesn't necessarily mean changing who you are. Sometimes it means recognising the approaches you naturally rely on, understanding what a particular situation requires, and developing more ways to respond. Across 12 episodes, we'll explore recognisable workplace experiences, the patterns that shape how we navigate them, and what becomes possible when we develop greater behavioural range. This season is about moving beyond simply recognising the hidden rules of work towards making more deliberate choices about how we navigate them. A new rhythm for Season 4New episodes every second Wednesday. Each episode will have a companion Field Guide featuring a practical experiment to try in your own working life. The fortnightly rhythm gives you time to take the ideas beyond the podcast: Listen → Reflect → Experiment → Notice → Continue Because Political Intelligence becomes meaningful when we begin applying it to the meetings, conversations, decisions and relationships that shape our working lives. Coming next: Episode 1 — The Move That Usually WorksHave you ever reached a point where you felt you'd tried everything to influence a situation, but nothing seemed to change? What if you'd tried several different things — but they were all variations of the same kind of move? That's where our Season 4 exploration begins. Season 4 launches Wednesday 28 October 2026, with new episodes every second Wednesday. Understand yourself. Understand the system. Choose how you lead.
