Gas Cars Are Back — And EV Charging Is Getting Expensive

Gas-powered cars are NOT going away as fast as automakers once promised, and this week on The Drive with Lauren and Karl, we dig into why. Cadillac is delaying the end of several gas models, Honda is shifting the CR-V toward hybrids, Volkswagen is bringing back big gas-powered SUVs, and Audi is doubling down on large gasoline-powered SUVs. Meanwhile, EV charging costs are raising some serious questions about the claim that electric vehicles are always cheaper to operate. Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer break down what’s really happening in the automotive industry, including one EV charging mistake that cost a Chevrolet Bolt driver $414 to charge, why public fast charging can rival the cost of gasoline, and whether falling gas prices could completely change the EV cost equation. We also have some good news from California. Leno’s Law has passed the California legislature with overwhelming support, potentially eliminating annual emissions testing for 1976–1985 vehicles. But there are still restrictions attached that could limit how owners use these classic cars. Plus, Lauren and Karl explain the difference between start-stop technology and keyless start, reveal the longest-lasting vehicle brands according to a massive iSeeCars study covering nearly 395 million vehicles, and discuss the growing problem of rear-camera recalls affecting millions of vehicles on American roads. On this episode:Gas-powered cars are making a comebackEV charging costs vs. gasolineA $414 EV charging billLeno’s Law and California’s classic carsStart-stop vs. keyless startThe longest-lasting car brandsMillions of vehicles affected by rear-camera recalls The Drive with Lauren and Karl brings you automotive news, industry trends, new vehicles, technology, consumer issues and the stories that matter to drivers. California’s New Car Taxes Are Coming — Plus the BMW M3 & BRABUS BODO

California is coming after your car again — with new tire rules, mileage tracking and another potential $900-a-year vehicle tax. But that’s not all on this week’s The Drive with Lauren and Karl. Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer break down the biggest automotive stories of the week, including California’s latest anti-car moves and what they could mean for drivers across the country. We also take a look at the new 2028 BMW M3 and how BMW is changing one of its most iconic performance cars, plus an exclusive interview with Constantin Buschmann, CEO of BRABUS, about the incredible new BRABUS BODO, named after the company’s founder and his father. Then we ask a question every driver wants answered: Will the Venezuelan oil deal actually bring down gas prices, and if so, when? Fall driving is also here. Lauren and Karl discuss cold-weather driving, leaves and slippery road conditions, and what you should know when choosing tires for the season. And we expose the truth behind California’s new tire rules and the growing push toward automatic mileage tracking. California may be leading the charge, but other states are watching — and some are already considering similar policies. On this episode: • California’s new tire rules • The truth about California’s tire law • New vehicle mileage tracking requirements • California’s latest gas tax • The potential $900-a-year cost to drivers • Will gas prices fall after the Venezuelan oil deal? • Preparing your car for fall and winter driving • The new 2028 BMW M3 • Exclusive interview with BRABUS CEO Constantin Buschmann • The new BRABUS BODO Subscribe to The Drive with Lauren and Karl for the latest automotive news, new cars, consumer issues and the stories affecting drivers and car owners. 👉 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to stay up to speed with The Drive! https://thedrivecarshow.com/ 👉 Follow us on social media: Join Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer for the ride—follow us on X and FB @thedrivecarshow Syndicated Radio show on both AM, FM and Podcast platforms. 👉 Follow Lauren Fix on: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarCoachReports YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@car-smarts Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carcoachreports X: https://www.x.com/laurenfix FB: https://www.facebook.com/Car.Coach.Reports Website: https://carcoachreports.com/ 👉 Follow Karl Brauer on: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@KarlBrauerCars Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karlbrauer X: https://x.com/karlbrauer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KarlonCars Website: https://www.karlbrauer.com/ #TheDrive #LaurenFix #KarlBrauer #carguys #CarPodcast #AutoNews #CarTalk #AutomotiveRadio #CarShow #AutomotiveExperts #CarReviews #News #AutoIndustry #CarCulture ©Automotive Aspects, Inc., 2026. $756 MILLION IN CARS! Genesis GV90, McLaren 788, Hybrid RV & Lamborghini Revuelto SV

The Drive with Lauren and Karl – Episode 47 | Monterey Car Week, $756M Auctions & Lamborghini Revuelto SV Monterey Car Week delivered massive car reveals, record-breaking auction prices and some seriously rare machinery, and Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer break it all down in Episode 47 of The Drive. Lauren and Karl kick off the show from Monterey Car Week with a look at the biggest reveals, including an exclusive interview with Nolan Gray, Product Manager for McLaren Americas, discussing the new McLaren 788 HS and where this high-performance machine fits into McLaren’s 720, 765, 750 and 788 lineup. Then it’s auction time. Monterey Car Week auctions generated a staggering $756 million in sales, with modern supercars accounting for more than half of the total. A 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe shattered the record for an American car at $42.9 million, while a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport reached $18.7 million, setting a new Corvette auction record. A 1996 McLaren F1 GTR also made history at $34.7 million, becoming the most valuable British car ever sold at auction. But the auction results weren't all about million-dollar supercars. Lauren and Karl examine what happened to more common 1950s and 1960s classics, many of which sold below condition-appropriate expectations. What does that tell us about today's collector-car market? The conversation then shifts to something that affects far more drivers: used-car affordability. New iSeeCars data reveals which cities and states have experienced the biggest increases in used-car prices since 2019. Salt Lake City, Atlanta and Charlotte saw increases of more than 46%, while Rhode Island, Utah and Florida led the states, with increases approaching 50%. Lauren and Karl also take a first look at the all-new 2028 Genesis GV90, the brand’s flagship full-size electric luxury SUV. With more size, power, technology and luxury than any Genesis before it, the GV90 is targeting some serious competition, from Mercedes-Benz and BMW to Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The show continues with an interview with Mitch Johnson of Harbinger, Head of Electric at Jayco, about the new Jayco Embark, bringing electrification into the motorhome world. And we finish with Lamborghini. Lauren and Karl sit down with Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, to discuss the Revuelto Miura 60° Homage, a limited-production V12 celebrating 60 years of the legendary Miura. Only 99 examples will be produced, making this a serious piece of Lamborghini history. From multimillion-dollar collector cars to the future of electric luxury SUVs and RVs, Episode 47 of The Drive with Lauren and Karl covers the cars, technology and industry stories that matter. Used Cars Are Up $9,000! Are Exotic Car Auctions Rigged? + 2027 Toyota Tundra + More

On The Drive with Lauren and Karl, Episode 46 takes a deep dive into some of the biggest stories affecting drivers, buyers and car enthusiasts right now. We start with a growing issue that goes far beyond Flock cameras: the expansion of vehicle surveillance technology and what it could mean for privacy, constitutional rights and everyday drivers. How much of your driving history is being collected, who has access to it, and where does the surveillance state go next? Then Lauren and Karl break down the latest iSeeCars used-car affordability study, and the numbers are not encouraging. The average price of a three-year-old used vehicle has jumped 38%, or more than $9,000, since 2019. A $20,000 budget once gave buyers access to nearly half of the 1- to 5-year-old used-car market. Today, it reaches just 11.4%. What used to be a relatively new vehicle for $20,000 may now mean an older car with significantly more miles and potentially higher maintenance costs. The show also takes a close look at the 2027 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia, including the new Trail Hunter package and upgraded TRD Pro trims. Lauren and Karl discuss the changes and are joined by Jack Ferguson, Engineering Manager for Toyota Performance Products, for an exclusive interview about the 2027 Tundra TRD Pro. Then we head into the world of Ford Custom Garage with Matt Simpson, Executive Director of Customization, who explains the Ford Performance parts, upgrades and customization options available to owners who want to take their vehicles to the next level. Finally, Lauren and Karl investigate a controversial question surrounding the exotic car market: Are auction prices always telling the real story? They examine suspicious bidding and pricing activity on online auction sites and discuss why some of today's sky-high exotic-car valuations may not accurately reflect what these cars are actually worth in the real-world market. From privacy and affordability to performance trucks, factory customization and exotic-car valuations, Episode 46 of The Drive with Lauren and Karl covers the stories that matter to people who actually own, drive, buy and sell cars. Flock Cameras, Car Theft & EV Incentives: The Drive with Lauren & Karl

Are your car, money and privacy being protected, or are you paying more while getting less? Lauren Fix and Karl Brauer tackle some of the biggest issues facing drivers in Episode 45 of The Drive. First, the debate over Flock surveillance cameras heats up. Flock’s CEO says the technology has already passed Fourth Amendment scrutiny, but legal experts argue the constitutional questions are far from settled. Then Karl takes the Ford F-150 Tremor off-road, including a run up Saddleback Mountain. Is the Tremor the sweet spot between the FX4 and Raptor? Lauren and Karl break down its off-road equipment, Trail Turn Assist, Trail 1-Pedal Drive, locking rear differential, 33-inch tires and the big question: EcoBoost V6 or V8? California is also back in the EV incentive game with a new taxpayer-funded program aimed at first-time EV buyers. But what about higher charging costs, insurance premiums and the monthly car payment? Lauren and Karl examine who really benefits. Car theft is getting smarter, and more expensive. Signal-boosting attacks have been stealing vehicles for years. Lauren explains how she actually paid a dealer to disable the key-fob programming on her 2018 Dodge Demon to help prevent this type of theft. Now Ford is reportedly offering protection through a monthly subscription. Is preventing theft becoming another feature you have to pay for? Karl also reviews the Mercedes-Benz CLA 350, and it delivers a major surprise. Nearly 400 miles of range, more than 300 miles at an 80–85% charge, a premium interior, impressive driver-assist technology, three screens and a 0–60 time of just 4.5 seconds. Is this the EV that finally gets the formula right? And finally, Lauren and Karl review the Chevrolet Suburban Diesel and explain why diesel remains such a compelling choice for towing, long-distance driving and everyday SUV duty. In this episode: • Flock cameras and the Fourth Amendment • Ford F-150 Tremor off-road review • V6 vs. V8 torque and towing • California's new EV incentive program • Signal boosters and vehicle theft • Ford's potential anti-theft subscription • Mercedes-Benz CLA 350 review • EV range and real-world charging • Chevrolet Suburban Diesel review • Why diesel still matters Subscribe to The Drive with Lauren and Karl for automotive news, new-car reviews, industry investigations and straight talk about what matters to drivers. #TheDrive #LaurenFix #KarlBrauer #CarNews #CarReview #FordF150 #MercedesCLA #ChevroletSuburban #CarTheft #EV #AutomotiveNews

This week, Ram brings back the legendary TRX with a supercharged 777-horsepower HEMI V8, making it the most powerful Ram truck ever built. Is this the return of American performance enthusiasts have been waiting for? Then the conversation shifts overseas as Mercedes-Benz reportedly turns to China's Geely for hybrid engine production. Will luxury buyers accept a Mercedes powered by a Chinese-built engine, or does the three-pointed star still stand for German engineering? The team also examines the growing questions surrounding Lucid Motors. After massive quarterly losses, layoffs, and bankruptcy rumors that sent its stock on a roller coaster ride, is the EV startup running out of time, or will Saudi backing keep it alive? Next, Lauren, Karl, and Michael discuss the steep decline in sales for Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW in China despite expanding their EV lineups. What does this mean for the global auto industry and the future of electric vehicles? Modern vehicles are becoming more intrusive than ever. Subaru's latest EyeSight system is warning drivers, vibrating the steering wheel, and even taking control when it thinks you're not paying enough attention. As more automakers adopt similar technology, are we improving safety or giving up too much control? Finally, we preview one of the biggest automotive events of the year, Monterey Car Week, including The Quail, the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, celebrations of the Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari F40, Japanese GT legends, and the 100th anniversary of Route 66.
