    Fatphobia: The Movie! ("Shallow Hal")

    Of all the movies released in 2001, SHALLOW HAL is probably No. 1 on the list of those that could never be made again by a major studio, and that’s certainly a good feather in humanity’s cap. Alas, because they’re men, Josh and Slate did their best to defend whatever honor this movie has in the face of a force greater than Goop — Allison the unfettered hater!!! It stars Jack Black — arguably the 21st Century’s biggest movie story, which is a statement that certainly says something about humanity, too — and Gwyneth Paltrow, who has the good fortune (?) of being the subject of this week’s bonus feature. Spoiler: there’s coochie talk. As always, we try to decide if this movie matters in 2026, but this time with a bountiful helping of problematic comedians! LFG!!!!!!!     I Forgot to Tattoo the Title of This Episode ("Memento")

    Are you sure this podcast isn’t starting from the end? That it isn’t happening concurrently with the beginning? That what you’re listening to is reliable? That this isn't really about THE ODYSSEY?!?! MEMENTO often pops up in lists as a 2000 movie because that was the year of its festival release, but the movie didn’t hit movie theaters for the actual buying public until 2001 so Christopher Nolan’s first widely known flick is officially in our camp. And what a movie this is! Guy Pearce stars as Leonard, a guy who might be the most unreliable narrator to ever grace a movie screen. He’s trying to find the guy who killed his wife, but what he might find is something scarier than a murderer: the truth!     PEARL HARBOR is what happens if Michael Bay wants to make TITANIC and everybody around him says, ‘OK, you should definitely go for it bro!’” We kick off the back half of our year-long trek through 2001's cinema monuments with one of the most dreadful blockbusters of the 21st century. And we welcome back a special guest, Justin of “Unvarnished,” to help us parse through the history. If PEARL HARBOR’s greatest offenses were its historical inaccuracies, that’d be one thing. But the best performance in this movie comes from a character that could have easily been written out of the movie. It’s a Michael Bay masterclass, is what I’m trying to say. (This shit was nominated for FOUR Oscars and actually won one!!!)     My World's On Fire, How 'Bout Yours? ("Shrek")

    Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me. And they were correct. Honestly a great call. We’re battered but not broken after 25(!!!!!) mainline episodes of this “limited series” and have finally arrived at the halfway mark, and it’s a big boy — SHREK is on deck!!!!!! Does this swampy romp even need an introduction? SHREK won the first EVER Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and spawned a full-fledged franchise with spin-offs and everything. It’s a middle finger to Disney that somehow has as much heart as anything produced by the Mouse House (if not more). It’s probably singlehandedly responsible for keeping Smashmouth relevant forever. We try to answer some of those questions this week with our special guest Larry Treadway, lead singer of Tojo Yamamoto and a renowned aficionado in cinema that’s … less loved than most. Directed by longtime D-lister Nico Mastorakis and staring Nastassja Kinski, Nicollette Sheridan, Roger Daltrey and Huey Lewis, the film follows a paralyzed woman who stumbles upon a live-stream killer on the early internet. We dive into the film’s peak-Y2K aesthetic, the hilarious logistics of its technology, and how it captured a unique moment when the World Wide Web really did feel “wide.” In our bonus feature segment, we leverage Mastorakis’s “pedigree” to dig into the history of exploitation cinema.     This week we’re traveling across continents and deep into our feels with NOWHERE IN AFRICA (NIRGENDWO IN AFRIKA) Caroline Link’s sweeping 2001 drama captivated global audiences and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Academy Awards (an important distinction particularly for our show). Based on Stefanie Zweig's autobiographical novel, the film tells the story of a Jewish family fleeing Nazi Germany to start a new life on a remote farm in Kenya. We dive into the film’s exploration of cultural displacement, the nuanced portrayal of familial relationships through the lens of a young girl approaching adolescence and discuss what it “home” really means. We use this week’s bonus feature to highlight other prominent 2001 movies directed by women before a bigger discussion about Hollywood’s general treatment of female directors, especially how things have improved and how it could be better.     BONUS: This Movie Destroyed Me ("A.I. Artificial Intelligence" with Derek from the Glitterjaw Podcast Collective)

    Hi, Josh here. I put off watching A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE for a long time and immediately after watching felt like I had to talk about it. This might be my favorite movie of the year. This is a monumental collaboration between Stanley Kubrick (who conceived it) and Steven Spielberg (who wrote and directed it after Kubrick's death). Haley Joel Osment gives a performance of a lifetime as David, the first Mecha designed to act as a loving child. So much ensues, and it produces way more to feel and think about than I could've dreamed. Bonus episodes are always loose, but this might take the cake. It's honestly a lot of me rambling while Derek (NOT DOUG!!!) from the Glitterjaw Podcast Collective gracefully ebbs and flows through my poorly constructed word salad. Go check out all of his great work and that of Glitterjaw as a whole. I'm gonna be thinking about this movie forever, probably.
