    Time is Cruel ("Donnie Darko")

    DONNIE DARKO might be the quintessential cult film. It struggled to make it to cinemas, proceeded to make next-to-nothing, spent the next 2-3 years gathering a small but mighty following driven by a few cineplexes, culminating in a controversial Director’s Cut release on DVD! If not Jake Gyllenhaal’s breakout role, his turn as the titular Donnie Darko is certainly among the ones most associated with a man whose name is impossible to spell right on the first try. He’s flanked here by a phenomenal supporting cast — Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and Seth Rogen are just a handful of the people in small but memorable roles here — as well as his real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal as … his sister. DONNIE DARKO is a peculiar movie that’s kinda hard to explain, especially if you’re watching the (superior) theatrical cut. It involves time travel, the depiction of which in cinema is the subject of this week’s bonus feature. Always a good time, right??!! Finally: does DONNIE DARKO still matter in 2026?     I Am Not What I Am ("O")

    In 2001, Tim Blake Nelson reimagined William Shakespeare’s OTHELLO as O, an angst-filled teenage drama that plays out in and around a bunch of rich kids’ pursuit of a state basketball championship. O sat on Miramax’s shelf for over two years following the tragedy at Columbine before Lionsgate finally brought it to theaters. We break down Mekhi Phifer’s powerhouse performance as athletic prodigy Odin “O” James, Josh Hartnett as the despicable hater Hugo, and Julia Stiles as a younger variant of a character similar to the one she plays in the much more widely seen surprise hit from earlier in the year, SAVE THE LAST DANCE. Martin Sheen is their coach, cause why not? In our bonus feature segment, unpack Shakespeare on screen and the art of modernizing the Bard.     It's Maskin' Time! ("Vanilla Sky")

    At least for another week, VANILLA SKY probably holds the title of “Strangest Movie in which Tom Cruise has Starred.” We’re onto you, DIGGER! The world’s most famous scientologist plays David, a magazine publisher whose life seems ridiculously difficult; I mean, he has a sexy actress (Cameron Diaz) fawning over him and he can’t shed her from his life! Don’t feel too bad for David, though, cause soon he’ll f**k over his best friend Brian (Jason Lee) and hook up with his budding companion, Sofia, portrayed by Penelope Cruz just as the character is in ABRE LOS OJOS, the 1997 Spanish movie from which VANILLA is adapted. Wait, none of that sounds too weird? Don’t worry, the masks come out soon enough. Director Cameron Crowe has had quite an eventful life, and we dive into that and his filmography in this week’s bonus feature before closing on the weekly question, “Does this movie matter?” Open your eyes!!!     Jabs and Slaps ("Osmosis Jones")

    OSMOSIS JONES was the penultimate movie in a string of box-office stinkers for Warner Bros. Animation, contributing to that operation’s theatrical output going to zero for about a decade. But why? We dive into that as we enter the miserable body of Frank (Bill Murray) in this week’s episode. The movie, a live-action/animated hybrid, truly stars Chris Rock as the titular Osmosis “Ozzy” Jones and David Hyde Pierce as Drix, a cold pill, as a buddy duo trying to save their locale from a lethal virus. For this bonus feature segment, of course, we go DEEP into the COVID-19 pande … SLAP Oh, forgive me, I mean, we’re talking about “The Greatest Night in the History of Television.” Does OSMOSIS JONES matter in 2026?     Diane Lane Day (Double Feature: "The Glass House" and "Hardball")

    For the first and only time in the main series, we have a double feature: THE GLASS HOUSE and HARDBALL, the two studio releases that came out in the days following September 11, 2001. THE GLASS HOUSE stars Leelee Sobieski, Stellan Skarsgard and Diane Lane. HARDBALL stars Keanu Reeves, a host of children (including a super young Michael B. Jordan) and, somehow, also Diane Lane. She was determined to bring America entertainment in one of its darkest hours! 9/11 happened. It was tragic and you’ve been reminded of everything associated with that day and the aftermath many times over in the last few days. We reflect on that a bit during this week’s bonus segment, which is more precisely dedicated to something we’re better at excavating: pop culture relics that happened to be in the zeitgeist on that day!     We clocked the biggest collective whiff in our draft way back at the start of the show. Thankfully, we had a built-in means to rectify it in a deserving manner: LEGALLY BLONDE is our de facto “winner’s choice” episode! Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a fashionista and quick-witted college co-ed who gets dumped and decides to chase her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School. Once there, though, we all discover that she might be just what the frumpy institution needs. Jennifer Coolidge, Luke Wilson and Moonie the dog are among the co-stars in one of the century’s most iconic comedies.     It's September 1, so you know what that means: time to board the Hogwarts Express! Today we’re discussing HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE and, given the weight and volume of all there is to discuss, we welcomed two guests for the first time. Hadley Balser is a journalist and recent college grad, and TheSecondBatgirl is a podcaster and general expert on all things fandom (she also once was a moderator for a Harry Potter fan site — remember those?!) Yes, we talk about J.K. Rowling’s bigotry against transgender people, and the impact that’s had on how folks engage with Harry Potter. If you don’t want to hear that, grow up.
