  3. Benjamin Perks - A No 'Bullsh*t' Approach To Saving Children's Lives; At Scale

Benjamin Perks - A No 'Bullsh*t' Approach To Saving Children's Lives; At Scale

What if you could look back on your life and see that your work has made the lives of millions of children around the world so much better?  Ben Perks is a leader at UNICEF, an author and child rights advocate who spent his youth running away from violent care homes. His inspirational story is far from ordinary and proves that it just takes one person to see the potential in you, for you to believe in yourself. Ben is the cycle breaker and change maker who was told “Your job is to save children’s lives at scale” and rose to the challenge. He could either have turned his life into a victimhood of his younger years, or used his lived experiences to create a positive impact and change for children around the world. He chose the latter. In this episode, we discuss who inspired him to escape the life society would have conditioned him into. The inspirational leader who demanded “No b******t” and to focus on their real outcome - to save children’s lives at scale.  Not to mention the incredible work that is showing parents the skills to be able to meaningfully love their children, and in turn healing themselves. True proof that love heals. His book Trauma Proof explores how childhood trauma is not an insurmountable problem, it is in fact one that we can heal from globally through simple, scalable united actions. “What is our legacy? We now have this science that tells us if we can reduce childhood adversity, improve nurturing care, we can have much better outcomes and save a lot of money for the lives of the life cycle. And for society, that should be a no-brainer.” If one person can break the cycle, this podcast asks - can we all be cycle breakers? Take a listen, this is a powerful episode! #unicef #childhoodtrauma #generationalcyclebreaking #traumaproof #inspiringpodcasts Music: 'Spirit of Fire' - fiftysounds.com Share your reactions, questions, the insights you get from our episodes. Fixing the Frontline: Ron Taylor on the Social Care Crisis and the Power of EQ

From caring for his grandfather in the 1980s to managing 13 care homes across the north of Scotland today, this Unmuted episode guest delivers a masterclass in how EQ has been the vital core of delivering successful care. Ron Taylor is the Managing Director of the award-winning Parkland Care Homes and with over 30 years in this sector he pulls no punches regarding the “heinous” financial pressures it faces including a staggering 15% pay gap between social care workers and the NHS. He shares his thoughts on why the social care sector is the "lost cousin" of the NHS, how fixing "bed blocking" requires a total rethink of care funding and his manifesto for the government, including a £15/hour minimum wage for social care workers. Beyond the politics, we explore Ron’s unique leadership philosophy: why he recruits for Emotional Intelligence (EQ) over IQ, and how "servant leadership" allows his frontline managers to focus on what matters most—the residents. How a Hairy-Assed Farmer Became a Scottish Success Story

He thought he was indestructible, but when illness brought him to his knees it also served him with lessons of personal growth he never expected. Mike Forbes is former fly-fishing champion, in his own words a ‘hairy-assed farmer’ from Angus, and a man who looked a 10% survival rate in the eye and told it to sod off. This episode of the Unmuted podcast shares the bare faced resilience but also the unswerving humility of Mike’s spirit.  Mike started life as a second generation farmer who sees opportunities in challenges. When the pig farming business was in decline, he transformed a run down boathouse into a coveted luxury country resort. His real transformation occurred during his recovery from a rare leukemia. Faced with a 10% survival rate, Mike found faith through a series of events that have shaped him into a man who now expresses empathy, humility and transparency. For those of you who have visited Forbes of Kingennie Country Resort, the history of the location and man who made this place will likely astound you. For anyone who has faced a dark journey of their own, this podcast might serve as a beacon of light. An incredible story of an incredible man whose outlook on life is from a life well lived. #forbespfkingennie #mikeforbes #faithlikepotatoes #inspiringstories #scottishheroes Music: 'Spirit of Fire' - fiftysounds.com Share your reactions, questions, the insights you get from our episodes.
