215 BODIES IN UNMARKED GRAVES: How Did Their Families Not Know?

Imagine reporting your loved one missing—only to discover months later that they had already died and been buried in an unmarked grave. In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we take a deep dive into a disturbing story out of Mississippi involving 215 people reportedly buried in unmarked graves behind a jail, with families allegedly not being notified of their deaths. One of the stories at the center of the reporting is Dexter Wade, a 37-year-old man whose mother reported him missing. She spent months not knowing where her son was. She eventually learned that Dexter had been struck and killed by a police vehicle and buried in the same cemetery behind the jail—without her being notified. His body was later exhumed and given a proper burial. And the questions don't stop there. According to the reporting discussed in the episode, records identified 215 people buried behind the jail since 2016 whose families allegedly had not been notified. The story raises deeply troubling questions about how people who die in custody or under government supervision are treated—and whether families are being given the answers they deserve. Then we move into another complicated story involving a former San Francisco police officer who testified about his relationship with an alleged gang leader and a decades-old quadruple-murder investigation. The former officer described sharing information with the alleged gang member, warning him about planned raids, and operating in ways former law-enforcement officials interviewed for the story said crossed major boundaries. His testimony itself became an issue of credibility in the prosecution's case. We ask some difficult questions: What happens when the people responsible for enforcing the law don't follow the rules? Can a prosecution built around questionable police conduct still deliver justice? And how much should a jury trust testimony from an officer whose own conduct is being questioned? But this isn't all serious. We also talk about Wisconsin politics and David Crowley, representation in politics, AOC, the meaning of being “woke,” and why criticizing bad police officers isn't the same thing as being against police. And then there's another jaw-dropping story: 🎓 Penn State fraternity members accused in a cocaine-trafficking operation, including allegations that fraternity pledges were forced to cut and package cocaine as part of a hazing/indoctrination process. And, naturally, we bring it back to everyday life. ☕ Coffee ⚾ Milwaukee Brewers 🗳️ Wisconsin politics 🎙️ Podcast life 📦 Package theft 🐶 Chewy 🎵 Music 😂 Random conversations 🚨 Crime and justice That's Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle. WEED, WAR & WISCONSIN: Politics, Football & Real Talk

It's another day in the world of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, and this episode is a little bit of EVERYTHING. DVJ is heading into work, Michelle is still sleeping, coffee is being acquired, the car gets a much-needed wash—and somewhere along the way, we get into some serious conversations about what's happening in the world. 😂 We talk about Texas marijuana laws and the surprising consequences surrounding Delta-8, Delta-9 and other hemp-derived THC products. The conversation gets into just how serious the potential penalties can be in Texas—including extremely lengthy prison sentences depending on the amount involved. Then we turn to international news, including the latest developments involving Israel, Hamas and diplomatic discussions in Egypt. And of course, because this is Cold World, politics doesn't stay out of the conversation. We talk about Wisconsin politics and the governor's race, including who we're supporting—and what it means when someone says it's their first time voting. Then it's back to everyday Milwaukee life: ☕ Coffee runs 🥐 Cinnamon rolls & breakfast pastries 🚗 Car washes 🐶 Chewy's food 🍦 Ice cream 🏈 Football season 📻 Milwaukee sports talk 🏙️ Life in Milwaukee 😂 Random conversations that somehow turn into something completely different We also get into local Milwaukee coffee culture, including Collectivo, its local roots and the history behind the coffee we're drinking. And, naturally, football season is getting closer—which means DVJ is already talking quarterbacks, rookies and the upcoming NFL season. 🏈😂 This is Cold World. No perfect scripts. No polished-up conversations. Just DVJ & Michelle talking about life, politics, news, Milwaukee, sports and whatever else comes up. 🎙️ Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle 📍 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Listen. SHE DIDN'T PULL THE TRIGGER — BUT SHE WAS CONVICTED OF MURDER

In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we start with a disturbing Kansas City-area case involving the shooting death of Fairway police officer Jonah Oswald. Andrea Catherine was convicted of first-degree felony murder and several other charges after a 2023 incident that began with an alleged stolen vehicle and a police pursuit. Catherine was not accused of shooting Officer Oswald—but prosecutors successfully used Kansas' felony-murder law to hold her responsible for a death that occurred during the commission of a serious crime. That immediately raises some BIG questions: How far should felony-murder laws go? If you didn't pull the trigger, should you still be convicted of murder? Where does personal responsibility end—and accomplice liability begin? And does the punishment fit the crime? We dig into those questions and talk about just how complicated the criminal-justice system can become when someone dies during the commission of another crime. Then the conversation takes one of our favorite Cold World turns. 😂 We get into the current season of Big Brother, including the alliances forming inside the house and a heated discussion about whether race and racial stereotypes are influencing the way some houseguests are being treated. We talk about Black and Brown representation, stereotypes, colorism, identity and the assumptions people make about someone simply by looking at them. And then... ✈️ We're talking CALIFORNIA! DVJ & Michelle start planning a future California trip and debate Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Compton, Palm Springs, the redwoods, Alcatraz, the Pacific Coast Highway and everything in between. Do you fly? Do you drive? Could we handle a 40-hour road trip? And most importantly... Where are we taking Chewy? 😂 The conversation gets into past road trips, Atlanta, navigation disasters, OnStar, driving anxiety and the reality of trying to travel when you're not completely comfortable behind the wheel. We even revisit Route 66 and the idea of turning the trip into a true road-trip adventure from Chicago toward Santa Monica. And because this is Cold World, we somehow end up talking about: 🌿 Cannabis laws and dispensaries 📹 Flock license-plate readers 🚗 Driving and road safety 🏈 Football 📺 Big Brother 🎵 Music ☕ Coffee 🐶 Chewy 📺 Old-school soap operas 😂 And whatever else comes up We also talk about taking a much-needed break from the nonstop news cycle and why sometimes you just need to step away from CNN and everything happening in the world for a minute. That's Cold World. True crime. Race. Culture. Politics. Travel. Pop culture. And two friends having very real conversations about all of it. 🎙️ Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle 📍 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Listen. Share. Subscribe. WHO REALLY WAS ON THOSE BOATS? Venezuela, Trump & The Questions Nobody Wants Answered

They called them terrorists. But what do we actually know? In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we take a hard look at the controversial U.S. military strikes on boats connected to Venezuela—and the questions surrounding what happened in the Caribbean. The Trump administration said the boats were carrying Venezuelan “narco terrorists” and drugs, and that the people aboard were connected to the Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua. The government released video of one of the strikes and said 11 people were killed. But then investigators started digging deeper. The episode examines reporting that identified people killed in the strikes with very different backgrounds—including fishermen, a bus driver, laborers, a former military cadet and people with criminal histories. Investigators also found evidence that some of those killed were involved in drug smuggling. And that's where things get complicated. There's a HUGE difference between saying someone participated in drug trafficking and saying that person was a terrorist combatant who could legally be killed by the U.S. military. We talk about that distinction—and the much bigger question: Could these people have been arrested instead of killed? The episode also examines the controversy surrounding a second strike in which two people who reportedly survived the initial attack were subsequently killed. The Pentagon defended the second strike, while reporting about an alleged order that there should be “no survivors” was disputed. We're not here to tell you what to think. We're asking you to look at the evidence, question the official narrative and decide for yourself. Because when the government says: “Trust us. They're terrorists.” That's exactly when the public should be asking: “Show us the evidence.” Then we take the conversation in another direction with a powerful discussion about race, racism and the myth that Black and Latino Americans are “taking people's jobs.” We talk about employment statistics, economic inequality, immigration and the contradictions behind blaming people of color for economic problems. And because this is Cold World, we don't stay serious the entire time. 😂 We also talk about: ☕ Coffee and everyday life 🏈 Football season ⛽ Gas prices and Wisconsin road trips 🏙️ Milwaukee 🐶 Chewy and all his treats 🍕 Food, shopping and what we're cooking 🎙️ The podcast and our amazing listeners ❤️ Supporting local Black and Brown businesses We even spend time highlighting Milwaukee-area Black-owned businesses, restaurants and community organizations, including Alice's Garden and the America's Black Holocaust Museum. WALMART, DRUNK DRIVING & TRUE CRIME?! Just Another Day in Cold World

Grab your keys and come ride around Milwaukee with us! 😂 This episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle is a little different. There's no perfectly planned studio conversation this time. Instead, you're coming along for the ride as we run errands, head to Walmart, stop at El Rey, talk about food, pets, Milwaukee neighborhoods, shopping, hotels, football season and whatever else comes up along the way. And trust us... A LOT comes up. We even give you a little preview of Michelle's next true-crime story about Diane Downs, the infamous 1980s case involving the shooting of her children. We're not giving away the whole story—you'll have to listen to the upcoming episode for that one. 👀 But one conversation in this episode gets surprisingly serious: 🚨 DRUNK DRIVING IS VIOLENCE. We talk about why society often talks about shootings and other violent crimes differently than deaths caused by intoxicated drivers. When someone chooses to drive drunk, their vehicle can become a weapon—and the consequences can be just as devastating. A person can be driving home from a Brewers game, heading home from work or simply going about their day when someone else's decision changes everything in an instant. That's one of the reasons we use DUI and traffic-stop clips on Cold World. They're not there simply for laughs. There's a message behind them. We want people to think about what can happen when someone gets behind the wheel impaired—and hopefully make the decision to call a friend, get a ride or find another way home. And then... 😂 We go right back to talking about laundry detergent, dryer sheets, Walmart, cocoa butter, pets, food, hotels, Big Brother, Milwaukee's South Side, tacos, football season and everything else that happens when DVJ & Michelle are just being themselves. That's what makes Cold World different. Sometimes we're talking about serious crime. Sometimes we're talking about something happening in the world. And sometimes we're literally riding around Milwaukee arguing about dryer sheets and what we're having for dinner. 😂 Real conversations. Real life. No script. 🎙️ Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle 📍 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Listen. Laugh. Think. Share. WHEN YOUR CAR BECOMES A WEAPON: The Deadly Cost of Drunk Driving

What happens when a choice made behind the wheel destroys an entire family? In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we're talking about something that doesn't always get treated with the seriousness it deserves: drunk driving and the lives destroyed by it. We open with a powerful conversation about why we include DUI-related audio and arrest clips on the podcast. Even when some of the moments sound humorous or bizarre, the reason behind them is serious. Drinking and driving can turn a vehicle into a weapon. A car can weigh thousands of pounds. One decision can change—and end—multiple lives in seconds. We then discuss the heartbreaking Wisconsin case involving four siblings who were killed by an intoxicated wrong-way driver on Highway 10 in Waupaca County. Daniel, 26. Fabian, 23. Lillian, 14. Daniela, 9. Four people who were simply living their lives were gone just days before Christmas. Their family was devastated, and the loss reached far beyond the immediate family and into the community. The driver, Scott Farmer, had a revoked driver's license and was driving with a bottle of vodka that was reportedly more than half full. He later pleaded no contest and was found guilty of OWI and four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. We talk about the family's call for the maximum sentence, the Justice for Gonzales campaign, and the painful reality that no sentence can bring those four people back. But this episode isn't only about crime. We also take you along for some of the everyday Cold World conversation—talking about Milwaukee, laundry, going to the zoo, the podcast itself, our listeners around the world, politics, and what it means to remain an independent podcast that is simply trying to share information, tell real stories and have honest conversations. And speaking of our listeners... 🌎 You guys are EVERYWHERE. From Milwaukee and Madison to Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles—and from Austria, India and Malaysia to Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Kenya, Iraq, Australia and beyond—we take some time to give our listeners a huge shout-out. We're independent. We're not pretending to have all the answers. We might get things wrong sometimes because we're human. But one thing we promise: We're going to keep having the conversations. Because this is a cold world... and it's always crime time. 🎙️ Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle 📍 Milwaukee, Wisconsin 🔥 HASHTAGS #ColdWorld #ColdWorldPodcast #ColdWorldWithDVJAndMichelle #DVJAndMichelle #ColdWorldCrimeTime #TrueCrime #WisconsinTrueCrime #WisconsinCrime #MilwaukeePodcast #Milwaukee #Wisconsin #DrunkDriving #OWI #DUI #DrunkDrivingAwareness #DontDrinkAndDrive #ImpairedDriving #RoadSafety #WrongWayDriver #WaupacaCounty #JusticeForGonzales #VictimsMatter #CrimeAwareness #CriminalJustice #FamilyTragedy #RealStories #TrueCrimePodcast #IndependentPodcast #MilwaukeeWisconsin #PodcastLife #PodcastCommunity

PULLED OVER AT GUNPOINT: When AI & Police Get It WRONG

What happens when technology meant to help police catch criminals gets it WRONG? In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we dive into a disturbing Wisconsin case involving a woman who was pulled over at gunpoint after an outdated license-plate alert connected her vehicle to a Milwaukee homicide. The woman, Amber Newell, was driving on I-94 in Brookfield when multiple officers surrounded her vehicle with guns drawn and ordered the occupants out. She was handcuffed and detained before police determined that the vehicle was no longer wanted. According to the report discussed in the episode, the problem wasn't that the Flock camera malfunctioned — an outdated alert had not been removed from the system. And that's where our conversation really begins. We talk about Flock cameras, AI-powered license-plate readers, surveillance, privacy and police accountability. These systems can potentially help solve crimes, but what happens when the technology makes a mistake? And who pays the price when that mistake results in someone being stopped at gunpoint? We also discuss concerns about officers allegedly misusing surveillance systems to track people for personal reasons — and the bigger question of how much information law enforcement should be able to collect about ordinary citizens. Then the conversation takes us around the world. 🇯🇵 We compare aspects of Japan's policing and criminal-justice system with the United States, including firearm use, pretrial detention, crime rates and different approaches to law enforcement. 🇲🇽 We discuss the case of a Texas law-enforcement officer accused of killing three people in Mexico and the circumstances surrounding his arrest while allegedly attempting to leave the country with his young son. 🎵 And then we shift gears with powerful cultural moments, including Nina Simone, Bob Marley, Black identity, culture and the importance of knowing where you come from. And, of course, there are plenty of those classic Cold World moments — music, food, Milwaukee, random conversations, humor and the kind of back-and-forth that makes it feel like you're sitting right there with DVJ & Michelle. Technology. Crime. Race. Policing. Culture. Accountability. Sometimes the biggest question isn't “What happened?” It's: “What happens when the system gets it wrong?” 🎙️ Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle 📍 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Listen. Follow. Share.
