Episode 17. The Courage to Begin Again

Today we’re talking about something that I think every woman will experience at some point in her life. Beginning again. Starting over. Starting fresh. Turning the page. Walking into a chapter you didn’t necessarily plan for. And let’s be honest… Sometimes starting over sounds exciting. And sometimes? It sounds absolutely terrifying. Because beginning again usually means leaving something behind. A relationship. A career. A friendship. A version of yourself. A dream that didn’t work out. A life you thought you were going to have. And sometimes, beginning again happens because we choose it. And sometimes, life chooses it for us. Either way, we’re standing there asking: “Okay… now what?” And that’s what I want to talk about today. Because maybe you’re listening to this episode and you’re in the middle of your own beginning again. Maybe you got divorced. Maybe your children grew up and your role changed. Maybe you’ve spent years taking care of everybody else and suddenly you’re asking, “What do I want?” Maybe you left a job. Maybe you lost someone. Maybe you moved. Maybe you’re rebuilding financially. Maybe you’re rediscovering yourself. Or maybe nothing dramatic happened at all. Maybe you just woke up one day and realized: “I don’t want to live the way I’ve been living anymore.” And that realization can be the beginning of something beautiful. But it takes courage. Because beginning again requires us to believe that there is something on the other side of what we already know. And today, mi jefa, my lady bosses, that’s what we’re going to talk about. The courage to begin again. And your permission slip today is: Give yourself permission to start over—even if you’re scared.

    Episode 16. Rest Isn’t Weakness

Welcome back to La Jefa Unfiltered, where we have real talk, real life, and real growth. If you’re listening while you’re driving, walking, cleaning the house, sitting at your desk, or maybe you’re hiding in your car for five minutes of peace… Yes, mi jefa. I’m talking to you. Because today’s conversation is one, I think so many women need. We’re talking about rest. And specifically: Rest isn’t weakness. Let me say that again. Rest isn’t weakness. Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned that being productive meant being valuable. That if we weren’t doing something, we were falling behind. That if somebody needed something and we were available, we should help. That if there was laundry to fold, dishes to wash, emails to answer, children to take care of, work to finish, family to check on… We kept going. And going. And going. Until we were exhausted. And then, instead of saying, “I need rest,” we said: “I’m just tired.” “I’ll rest later.” “Let me finish this first.” “I have too much to do.” “Everybody needs me.” And sometimes we don’t even recognize how tired we are because we’ve become so accustomed to functioning while exhausted. So today, I want us to challenge that. Because rest is not something you earn after you’ve done enough. Rest is something you need because you’re human. And today’s permission slip is simple: Give yourself permission to rest without guilt.

Episode 15. Rediscovering the Woman You Used to Be

Today, we’re going to have a conversation that I think so many women need to hear.  We’re talking about rediscovering the woman you used to be.  And I want to clarify something right from the beginning.  When I say “the woman you used to be,” I’m not talking about going backward.  I’m not talking about becoming the younger version of yourself again.  I’m talking about remembering the parts of you that got lost somewhere along the way.  The woman who laughed more.  The woman who dreamed.  The woman who had hobbies.  The woman who had opinions and wasn’t afraid to express them.  The woman who had goals that had absolutely nothing to do with taking care of everybody else.  Because sometimes life happens.  We become someone’s wife.  Someone’s mother.  Someone’s daughter.  Someone’s caregiver.  Someone’s employee.  Someone’s best friend.  Someone everyone depends on.  And somewhere in the middle of all those roles, we can look up one day and realize…  “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”  And if you’ve ever felt that way, mi jefa, I want you to know something.  You’re not broken.  You’re not lost forever.  And you don’t have to completely reinvent yourself.  Maybe you just need to start coming home to yourself again.  So grab your coffee, your water, whatever you’re drinking today, and let’s talk about it.  Because today’s permission slip is:  Give yourself permission to rediscover who you are.

Episode 14. Healing Loudly: Taking Up Space Without Apologizing

Welcome back to another episode of La Jefa Unfiltered. I’m your host, Janet, and as always, I am so grateful you’re here spending a little part of your day with me. If you’ve been listening these past few weeks, you know we’ve been on a healing journey together. We talked about romanticizing your healing era, creating routines that nurture you instead of drain you. Then we talked about the power of saying no, because healing often begins with protecting your peace. Last week, we gave ourselves permission to rediscover who we are, especially after life, relationships, motherhood, careers, or simply time have caused us to lose pieces of ourselves. Today, we’re continuing that conversation because healing isn’t something you check off a list. It’s layered. Every lesson builds on the last, and every season asks something different of us. Today’s episode is called “Healing Loudly: Taking Up Space Without Apologizing.” Because once you start healing, something interesting begins to happen. You stop settling. You stop questioning your worth. You stop asking for permission to exist as your authentic self. You begin to realize that shrinking yourself never protected your peace—it only made you invisible. Healing isn’t just about recovering from what hurt you. It’s about becoming the version of yourself that no longer feels the need to apologize for taking up space. And that can feel uncomfortable. Especially if you’ve spent years making yourself smaller to keep other people comfortable. So today, we’re talking about what it looks like to stop shrinking yourself in your relationships, your career, your friendships, and even within your own family. Because healing isn’t meant to make you quieter. It’s meant to make you freer. So grab your coffee, your tea, or take me along on your walk, and let’s have an honest conversation. Let’s get into it.

Episode 12. You Don't Have to do it All

Before we dive into today’s episode, I want to start with something from the heart. First, I want to acknowledge that the past month has been incredibly difficult for me and my family. As many of you know, my dad underwent open-heart surgery, and during that time, life looked very different than it normally does. There were moments filled with uncertainty, fear, exhaustion, and a lot of emotions that I didn’t always have the words for. Like many eldest daughters, I immediately shifted into caretaker mode. I focused on my family, on helping where I could, on supporting my parents, and on making sure everyone around me was okay. But something else happened during this season. I was forced to practice what I preach. I had to give myself permission to pause. Permission to step away. Permission to rest. Permission to put family first. Permission to prioritize my mental and emotional well-being. That’s why Episode 12 took a little longer to arrive. Not because I didn’t care. Not because I wasn’t committed. But because sometimes the strongest thing we can do is recognize when we need to slow down. As women, as Latinas, as Jefa’s, lady bosses and especially as eldest daughters, we’re often taught that our value comes from how much we can carry. How much we can handle. How much we can sacrifice. But today’s conversation is about challenging that belief. Today’s episode is called: “You Don’t Have to Do It All.” We’re talking about the pressure of being the eldest daughter, the unofficial family manager, the fixer, the caretaker, the strong one, and why learning to rest isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. So, grab your cafecito, or a glass of your favorite wine, take a deep breath, and let’s have an honest conversation.
