Our Brazen Altar | Exodus 38:1-31

Exodus 38 finishes the work of the courtyard: the altar of burnt offering, the bronze laver, the hangings of the court, and a full inventory of the gold, silver and bronze that went into the tabernacle. Elder Arturo Tejeda reads the whole chapter and works through it in large sections, closing out a book the church began preaching in August of 2024. Along the way he stops at details easy to pass over: the laver made from the polished mirrors of the women who served at the doorway of the tent of meeting, the curtained court that fenced God's people into one nation and would one day be enlarged, and the tonnage of metal given freely by a people who had carried it out of Egypt as plunder. The last third of the sermon returns to the brazen altar. It stood at the entrance where no worshiper could miss it, always burning, smeared with blood, and bronze because bronze endures fire. That altar pointed forward to Calvary, where Christ bore the judgment and was not consumed, so that no one comes to the Father except through him. In this sermon Exodus 38 continues the construction begun in chapter 35, now in the court where everyone could seeBezalel finished the gold work first, then turned to the bronze items of the courtyardEverything that touched the consecrated altar was made holy, and the offerings were brought by faithThe laver was made from the mirrors of the serving women, ordinary women devoted to gathering and worshipThe priests saw their own dirt as they washed, as the word of God shows us our blemishesThe enclosed court pictured a confined Old Testament assembly that Isaiah 54 promised would be enlargedThe inventory lists roughly a ton of gold, three tons of silver and two tons of bronze, given willinglyThe metals came from the spoils of Egypt, so God supplied from their enemies what he asked them to giveThe brazen altar stood at the door, perpetually burning and bloody, the place of substitutionary sacrificeHebrews 10 shows the one offering of Jesus Christ accomplishing what yearly sacrifices never couldBronze resists fire, picturing the one who endured God's judgment without being consumedChapters0:00 Two years through the book of Exodus2:08 Reading Exodus 38 aloud7:04 Bezalel and the altar of burnt offering9:51 The bronze laver and the serving women15:33 The court and the Old Testament assembly20:22 Taking our service to God seriously23:08 Inventory of gold, silver and bronze29:02 Where the metals actually came from30:35 The brazen altar described in detail36:20 Substitution at the place of sacrifice41:31 Hebrews 10 and one sacrifice for all time44:25 Bronze, judgment and the power to endure46:04 Jesus Christ our brazen altar49:40 Closing prayer Scripture: Exodus 38:1-31 · Exodus 27 · Exodus 35 · Isaiah 54 · Exodus 29 · Leviticus 9 · Leviticus 16 · John 14:6 · Hebrews 10:1-18 · 1 Peter 2:24 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. The Ark, the Table, the Lampstand and the Altar | Exodus 37:1-29

Exodus 37 records Bezalel's construction of the furniture for the tabernacle — the ark with its mercy seat, the table for the showbread, the golden lampstand, and the altar of incense. Pastor Bobby Lugo walks through the chapter piece by piece, asking of every cubit and ring and gold molding the same question: what does this tell us about who God is? The sermon begins by pressing the point that God is not confined to a building. The tabernacle was the place where He dwelt among His people then; Jesus is the dwelling place of God now, and the Spirit indwells all who believe. From there the sermon takes each item in turn — the jar of manna, Aaron's budded staff and the tablets of the covenant kept in the ark; the blood sprinkled on the atonement cover once a year; the twelve loaves renewed each Sabbath; the perpetual flame; the incense that pictures the prayers of God's people. The second half turns to Christ as the fulfillment of all of it: the bread of life, the light of the world, the one who comes in to eat with us, and the great intercessor whose prayer in John 17 reached everyone who would believe. The sermon closes where the church closes every week, coming boldly to the throne of grace — the same word used for the mercy seat. In this sermon The house of God is not a building; God dwelt in the tabernacle, then in Jesus, and now by His Spirit in His churchBezalel, called the Leonardo da Vinci of the Hebrews, built the ark himself according to the instructions of Exodus 25The ark held the jar of manna, Aaron's budded staff from Numbers 17, and the tablets of the covenantThose three items show God as provider, ruler and covenant keeperMartin Luther's German translation gave us "mercy seat" for the atonement cover, capturing the theology of Leviticus 16The table of showbread marked Israel as set apart for service and bound to God by a covenant mealThe lampstand burned perpetually in a tent that would otherwise be pitch black, picturing God as the giver of light and lifeStrange incense was forbidden; God determines how He is to be worshiped, and Psalm 141 and Revelation 8 tie the incense to the prayers of the saintsJesus speaks tabernacle language when He calls Himself the bread of life and the light of the worldChapters0:00 The house of God is not a building2:08 Why people do not feel at home with God7:29 Reading Exodus 37 together11:56 The ark of the covenant built first14:51 Manna, Aaron's staff and the tablets22:39 The atonement cover and the mercy seat28:03 The table and the twelve loaves31:54 The lampstand burning in the darkness36:33 The altar of incense and the prayers of the saints40:40 What the tabernacle tells us about God42:15 Where is God's dwelling place today47:11 Jesus the bread, the light and the intercessor53:51 Coming boldly to the throne of grace56:12 Closing prayer before communion Scripture: Exodus 37:1-29 · Genesis · Exodus 25 · Exodus 16:32 · Numbers 17 · 2 Timothy 3:16 · Leviticus 16 · Leviticus 24 · 1 Samuel · Genesis 1 · 1 John 1:5 · Exodus 30 · Psalm 141:1 · Revelation 8:3 · John 6 · Revelation 3:20 · John 1:4 · John 8:12 · John 17 · Matthew 28 · Hebrews 4:16 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. A Building in Progress | Exodus 36:8-38

Exodus 36:8-38 walks step by step through the actual construction of the tabernacle — the curtains, the clasps, the acacia boards, the silver sockets, the veil. Pastor Bobby Lugo takes up the question most readers ask at this point: why does the Holy Spirit give us all these details? His answer is that behind the construction stands the architect, and the architect is God. Israel did not invent a house for God; God gave the pattern in Exodus 26 and supplied the materials, the craftsmen and the skill to carry it out. From there the sermon follows what he calls God's building project through the whole Bible. The materials grow more precious the nearer one comes to God's presence, and the veil with its woven cherubim says two things at once: God wants to dwell with his people, and sinners cannot casually walk in. John 1:14 says the Word tabernacled among us, Jesus points to the temple of his body in John 2, and at the cross in Matthew 27 the veil is torn from top to bottom. The last stretch brings it to the church. Through the Spirit, God's people are now his dwelling place, living stones being fitted together, which means each believer is still under construction. Pastor Bobby Lugo closes with Philippians 1:6 and Revelation 21:3, urging patience and grace toward one another until the day God dwells with his people forever. In this sermon Exodus 36 picks up the tabernacle construction interrupted by the golden calfThe tabernacle is the most remarkable structure ever built because God designed itIsrael builds exactly according to the pattern God gave in Exodus 26, not their imaginationGod supplied the pattern, the materials, the craftsmen and Bezalel's skillBronze, silver and gold grow more precious the nearer one comes to God's presenceCherubim woven into the curtains mark God's presence, as in the garden in GenesisThe veil declares both that God wants to dwell with his people and that he is holyJohn 1:14 says the Word became flesh and tabernacled among usIn John 2 Jesus speaks of the temple of his body, which the disciples understood only after the resurrectionThe torn veil at the cross and the church as living stones, a building still in progressChapters0:00 Where Exodus has brought us2:40 Hearst Castle and a fascination with building6:39 God is the architect of the tabernacle9:15 God's building project in three stages11:23 Reading Exodus 36:8-3816:32 Built by revelation, not imagination19:26 God supplied the materials, skill and pattern21:38 Cherubim, metals and drawing near with reverence25:31 The veil: God is holy, sinners cannot enter28:07 John 1 and the Word tabernacled among us33:31 Destroy this temple and I will raise it38:17 The veil torn at the cross44:21 The church as God's dwelling place48:19 Living stones and unfinished works59:39 Revelation 21 and closing prayer Scripture: Exodus 36:8-38 · Exodus 26 · Deuteronomy 8 · Genesis · John 1:1 · John 1:14 · John 2:16-22 · Matthew 27:50-51 · Hebrews 10:19-22 · Ephesians 2:19-22 · Philippians 1:6 · 1 Corinthians 6:19 · 1 Peter 2:5 · Revelation 21:3 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. Grace Comes Before Obedience | Exodus 35:30-36:7

Pastor Bobby Lugo finishes Exodus 35 and opens the first seven verses of Exodus 36, where God names Bezalel and Oholiab, fills them with his Spirit for every kind of craftsmanship, and the people bring so much for the tabernacle that Moses has to tell them to stop giving. The sermon argues that this outpouring is not the work of people who suddenly became good. It comes right after the golden calf of Exodus 32, after Moses interceded and God renewed the covenant. The same gold once melted into an idol is now carried in for God's dwelling place. Grace always precedes obedience, and the sermon sets that order against legalism, which says obey and perhaps God will accept you. From there Pastor Bobby Lugo traces the pattern through Scripture: God supplies what he commands, giving wisdom, skill, materials and even the willing heart. Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 show gifts given by grace for service, Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36 promise a new heart, and John 1 shows the Word tabernacling among us. The tabernacle was a shadow; Christ is the reality, and the church is now the dwelling place of God by his Spirit, headed for the day when God dwells with his people in a new heavens and new earth. In this sermon A call to pray for Brother Arturo and his family after the loss of his NanaMoses must restrain the people from giving because the materials are more than enoughBezalel and Oholiab are named and filled with the Spirit for wisdom, skill and teachingThe flow of Exodus 32 to 35: sin, mercy, forgiveness, covenant renewal, obedienceLegalism says make yourself worthy; the gospel says Christ has made you righteousGod does not merely give commands, he supplies what the command requiresRomans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 on gifts given by one Spirit for serviceJeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36 promise the law written on the heart and a heart of fleshThe gold once used for the golden calf is now given for God's sanctuaryJohn 1:14 uses tabernacle language: the Word became flesh and dwelt among usEphesians 2 describes the church built together into a dwelling of God in the SpiritChapters0:00 Prayer for Brother Arturo and his family1:07 The context: more than enough given4:58 Reading Exodus 35:30 through 36:78:19 God calls Bezalel by name9:22 From the golden calf to covenant renewal13:28 Legalism compared with the gospel16:50 God supplies what he commands19:37 Gifts given by grace for service26:50 A new heart that wants to obey34:57 The tabernacle was a shadow of Christ38:13 I will build my church44:55 The church as God's dwelling place49:14 Does obedience still matter?54:59 Closing prayer Scripture: Exodus 35:30-35 · Exodus 36:1-7 · Exodus 32:1-6 · Exodus 32:30-35 · Exodus 33:12 · Exodus 34 · Romans 12:1 · Romans 3 · Romans 12:3-8 · 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 · Ephesians 4:7-11 · Jeremiah 31:33 · Ezekiel 36:26-27 · Philippians 2:12-13 · John 14:15 · 1 John 4:19 · Exodus 25:8 · John 1:14 · John 2:19-21 · John 14:6 · Matthew 16:18 · Ephesians 2:19-22 · 1 Corinthians 3:16 · 2 Corinthians 6:16 · 1 Peter 2:4-5 · 1 Timothy 3:15 · Ephesians 4:31-32 · Titus 2:11-12 · Revelation 21 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. A Willing Heart | Exodus 35:1-29

Exodus 35:1-29 repeats much of what Yahweh had already told Moses in chapters 25 through 30, but with a key difference: the verbs shift from command to accomplishment. Pastor Bobby Lugo walks through the two preliminary commands given before construction begins, the Sabbath and the call for materials, and then through the list of those who actually brought what they had. The sermon dwells on the phrase "whoever is of a willing heart." God is not imposing a tax on Israel or laying a heavy yoke on them; He draws His people by kindness and leaves the amount to their own judgment. The congregation goes out from Moses' presence, and those whose hearts were stirred come back at once with gold, yarn, acacia wood, spun goat's hair, onyx stones and spices. The background is the golden calf, so this giving is the fruit of mercy received and restoration granted. From there the sermon asks whether the Sabbath, a sign carrying the death penalty, is the greatest commandment, and turns to Matthew 22 where Jesus answers with Deuteronomy 6. The Ten Commandments are traced out as loving God and loving neighbor, with the closing point that neither is possible without a renewed heart, which comes through the gospel. In this sermon Exodus 35 repeats chapters 25 through 30, but the verbs change from command to past tenseTwo preliminary commands come before construction: the Sabbath and the materialsChapter 31 gave the Sabbath as a sign that Yahweh is the one who makes Israel holyIsrael is not to set aside one sign of holiness in order to erect anotherThe new prohibition on kindling a fire keeps them from an early start on the work, and calls for trustThe contribution is voluntary: a king who does not burden his subjects with taxesPaul's teaching that God loves a cheerful giver, and that giving is measured by what a person hasThose whose hearts were stirred came and brought immediately, after the golden calf and the second set of tabletsMen, women skilled at spinning, and the rulers each gave out of what they hadMatthew Henry on the wealth plundered from Egypt being devoted back to GodJesus in Matthew 22 answers from Deuteronomy 6, and the first four commandments show love for God, the last six love for neighborThe ability to love God and neighbor comes from a renewed heart, and renewal comes through the gospel of Romans 1:16-17Assurance rests on the promise of Genesis 3:15, fulfilled in the one who has comeChapters0:00 Welcome and where we are in Exodus2:19 Reading Exodus 35:1-296:03 Prayer before the sermon7:14 The Sabbath command from chapter 3110:34 No fire kindled on the Sabbath12:10 A contribution from a willing heart14:51 God loves a cheerful giver17:03 The people go home and return with gifts20:26 The golden calf and godly sorrow23:44 Men, women and rulers all contribute28:33 Is the Sabbath the greatest commandment29:36 Jesus answers the lawyer in Matthew 2235:26 A renewed heart through the gospel40:32 Assurance in Christ and closing prayer Scripture: Exodus 35:1-29 · Exodus 31:12-17 · Exodus 25 · 2 Corinthians · Matthew 22:34-40 · Deuteronomy 6:5 · John 3 · Romans 1:16-17 · Genesis 3:15 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. The Fading Glory and the Face of Christ | Exodus 34:29-35

Exodus 34 closes with Moses coming down Mount Sinai carrying the two tablets, unaware that the skin of his face is shining from having spoken with God. This sermon works through verses 29 to 35, setting the scene against the golden calf and the renewal of the covenant, and asking what that strange, borrowed brightness was meant to teach Israel. The argument is that Moses only reflected a glory that came from outside him, and that the glory faded and had to be veiled. Matthew 17 shows Jesus on a mountain with a face shining like the sun, glory that belongs to him as the eternal Son, while John 1:14 says that glory took on flesh and came down to us. Paul's commentary in 2 Corinthians 3 then names the law as a ministry of death that nonetheless came with glory, and contrasts it with the greater and abiding glory of the ministry of the Spirit. The application turns on one word: behold. Believers are not told to transform themselves but to look intently at Christ, and the Spirit does the transforming, from glory to glory. The sermon ends with the already and not yet, glorified in Christ now, waiting to see him face to face, and a plain warning against answering conviction with resolutions to try harder. In this sermon God is glorious whether or not our eyes are opened to see itThe renewed covenant comes to a people fresh from the golden calfWhy the two tablets were likely two copies of the same covenantThe Hebrew behind "his face shone" and Michelangelo's horned MosesMoses reflected a glory he did not possess and had to veil itThe shining face marked Moses as the mediator with God's authorityMatthew 17: Jesus radiates the glory that Moses only reflectedThe Father silences Peter's three tabernacles: listen to him aloneJohn 1:14 and the gospel as God coming down, not man climbing up2 Corinthians 3: the ministry of death and the surpassing ministry of the SpiritThe veil is removed in Christ, not by works or informationBeholding Christ, and the Spirit transforming us from glory to gloryChapters0:00 Created to behold the glory of God3:59 Context: covenant renewed after the calf5:35 Reading Exodus 34:29-358:12 The two tablets of the testimony11:24 Why medieval art gave Moses horns13:03 Moses reflects glory he does not possess17:34 The veil and the fading brightness22:30 Matthew 17 and the transfiguration28:20 John 1:14, the Word became flesh31:31 2 Corinthians 3 and the ministry of death38:20 The veil removed in Christ43:06 Beholding with unveiled face48:45 Already glorified, not yet face to face51:24 Behold Christ instead of trying harder57:22 Closing prayer Scripture: Exodus 34:29-35 · Matthew 17:1-8 · John 1:14 · 2 Corinthians 3:7-18 · 2 Corinthians 4:6 · Romans 8:30 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. Authentic Worship and the Renewed Covenant | Exodus 34:18-28

Exodus 34:18-28 sets out what God requires of Israel after the golden calf: keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, redeem the firstborn, rest on the Sabbath, appear before the Lord three times a year, and bring the first of the first fruits. Having spent the previous verses telling Israel what not to do, God now tells them what to do instead. The sermon argues that these commands are not a new covenant but a reiteration of Exodus 20, given because Israel is a stubborn people heading into a land full of foreign worship. Numbers 25 and the incident with Phinehas show how quickly the warning was ignored, and the New Testament warnings about apostasy in 1 Timothy, Hebrews and 1 John are held up alongside it. A distinction is drawn between a lapse or season of doubt and a final, willful turning away. The closing section works out how these ordinances come to the church. Christ is the Passover lamb, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep, and the fulfillment of the feasts, and the Lord's Supper is where the church now feeds on him. The call is to sweep out the old yeast, tear down present-day idols, and honor the Lord's Day. The Covenant of God and a Stiff-Necked People | Exodus 34:10-17

Exodus 34:10-17 comes immediately after the golden calf, when Israel had broken the covenant in the most flagrant way imaginable, and God says, "Behold, I am going to make a covenant." This sermon asks why God would renew his promise with such a people, and answers that the reason lies not in Israel's worth but in God's character and in the promise he had made to Abraham centuries earlier in Genesis 15. From there the sermon shows that God's mercy never means indifference to sin. The same God who renews the covenant commands Israel to tear down the altars, smash the pillars, cut down the Asherim, and make no covenant with the people of the land, because those idols will become a snare. Paul makes the same argument to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 10, telling believers who already knew doctrine and shared the Lord's table to flee from idolatry and to let Israel's failures in the wilderness serve as a warning. The application turns personal: work, money, sports, entertainment, comfort, family, and personal preference can all take the place that belongs to God, and the Lord's Day often exposes which of them rules the calendar. But the sermon insists the answer is not trying harder. It is Christ, the rock in the wilderness, the true seed of Abraham, the faithful Israelite and better mediator of a new covenant in his blood. In this sermon Exodus 34 follows the golden calf, Israel's most treacherous act of rebellionGenesis 15 and the promise that Abraham's descendants would be enslaved and then deliveredIsrael's redemption from Egypt as the fulfillment of a promise made centuries beforeMoses as the author of the Pentateuch, writing Israel's history during the wilderness journeyGod renews the covenant with a people who could not keep itThe command to destroy altars, pillars, and Asherim rather than manage themGrace in the Old Testament, and the false split between a God of law and a God of gracePaul in 1 Corinthians 10: the rock was Christ, and these things were written for our instructionThe Corinthians' argument that an idol is nothing, and Paul's warning about the table of demonsCalvin on the heart as an idol factory, and how good things become ultimate thingsThe Lord's Day as a means of grace, not a negotiable appointmentWhat Christian parents teach their children by what they rearrangeChrist tempted and obedient where Israel grumbled and failedIsrael rejecting God at Sinai and rejecting him again at the cross for BarabbasChapters0:00 Introducing a stiff-necked people2:08 Five things to watch for3:29 Reading Exodus 34:10-176:14 Back to the promise to Abraham11:16 Israel's redemption fulfills God's promise12:52 Behold, I am going to make a covenant15:04 Tear down their altars and idols19:26 Paul's warning in 1 Corinthians 1028:25 Flee from idolatry33:25 Where are our golden calves36:13 The Lord's Day exposes our idols45:09 God is faithful, we are weak46:47 Christ the better mediator55:47 Three closing applications Scripture: Exodus 34:10-17 · Genesis 15:12-16 · Exodus 34:6-7 · 1 Corinthians 10 · Exodus 32 · John 1 · Acts 3 · Luke 22:20 · Hebrews 9:15 · Galatians 3 About Mercy and Grace ChurchMercy and Grace is an expository preaching church in National City, California, committed to preaching Christ, and him crucified, by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone.
