Zero Bucks Given #EP34 - Philip Mullins

Philip Mullins joins us for a wide-ranging and unapologetic conversation covering some of the most divisive issues facing Ireland today. Philip first became widely known on social media during the Covid era, where his outspoken and controversial views attracted both strong support and heavy criticism. In this episode, he reflects on that period, explains how his views developed, and addresses the public perception that has followed him ever since. The conversation turns to immigration, where Philip lays out his belief on how Ireland should respond to the current pressures around migration, housing, public services and integration. He discusses what he believes needs to change, why he feels many people are afraid to speak openly about the subject, and the reaction his opinions have received online. We also examine Philip’s criticism of mainstream media coverage in Ireland — not only what gets reported, but what he believes is sometimes overlooked, underreported or presented without enough context. Philip also responds directly to some of the labels and accusations aimed at him online, discusses the difference between criticism and censorship, and explains why he continues to speak publicly despite the controversy surrounding many of his opinions. Whether you agree with Philip Mullins or completely disagree with him, this episode offers an opportunity to hear his arguments in full and make up your own mind. Hosted on Acast. Zero Bucks Given #EP33 - Thato Montse

Reality TV, wine, controversy and the millionaire lifestyle — but how much of the story stands up when you look a little closer? In this episode of The Zero Bucks Given Podcast, we sit down with Thato Montse, entrepreneur, founder of Thato Wines and former cast member of The Real Housewives of Cape Town. Thato has built a public profile around business, wine, African heritage and an ambitious vision for the future. From launching Thato Wines in South Africa to developing plans for a vineyard and wine estate in her native Lesotho, she presents a story of entrepreneurship, determination and international ambition. But Thato's journey hasn't been without controversy. During her time on The Real Housewives of Cape Town, her wine credentials became a major talking point, with fellow cast members publicly questioning how involved she really was in making the wine bearing her name. Arguments became heated, accusations were thrown around and Thato quickly became one of the show's most outspoken and controversial personalities. We revisit those moments and ask what was reality-TV drama — and what, if anything, raised legitimate questions about the business behind the brand. We also look at Thato Wines itself. It is a genuine wine brand that has received industry recognition, including a 90-point result for one of its wines, and has previously been associated with South African retail distribution. But questions remain about the true scale of the operation, where the wine is produced, how extensive its distribution really is and how developed the new Lesotho wine-estate project currently is. Then there's the money. Thato has spoken confidently about her success and described herself as a millionaire. But what does being a millionaire mean? Rand millionaire? Euro millionaire? Business valuation? Property? Assets? Cash? With very little publicly available financial information surrounding Thato Wines or Thato's personal wealth, we wonder whether the public perception matches the reality. It's a conversation about image versus reality, personal branding, entrepreneurship and what happens when the claims surrounding a public figure are put under the microscope. Thato also discusses her move to Ireland, her experiences since arriving here, her future ambitions, the development of Thato Wines, Lesotho's potential as a wine-producing country and what she plans to build next. Is Thato Montse an underestimated entrepreneur building something genuinely groundbreaking? Has reality television created a distorted picture of her? Or are there fair questions still waiting to be answered? You decide. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Zero Bucks Given #EP30 - Elaine Mullally Part 1

In Part 1 of this special two-part episode of The Zero Bucks Given Podcast, we sit down with Elaine Mullally for an in-depth conversation about her life, her background and the journey that eventually brought her into the world of Irish politics. Before becoming known for her political campaigning and outspoken views on the direction of Ireland, Elaine's story began in Portarlington, County Laois, where she grew up in St. Brigid's Square with her parents and five sisters. She has lived and worked in Laois throughout her life, building a career spanning business, community development and public service. In Part 1, we go right back to the beginning. Elaine talks about her early life in Portarlington, the experiences that shaped her, her education and career, and the path that led her to become a business owner and an active figure within her local community. We explore Elaine's extensive business background, including establishing Clown Around Play Centre in Portarlington in 2008, as well as her previous work supporting start-up businesses through the Laois County Enterprise Board and helping establish a third-level education centre in the county. The conversation then turns towards politics. Elaine explains how her experiences as a business owner, mother and community activist began to influence her view of the Irish political system and ultimately pushed her towards becoming politically active. In 2023, Elaine became a founder and the first chairperson of Independent Ireland, before later leaving the party and subsequently standing as an Independent candidate in County Laois in the 2024 General Election. But how does someone go from running a business and working within their local community to entering national politics? What happened along the way? And what convinced Elaine that simply watching Irish politics from the sidelines was no longer enough? Part 1 focuses on the person behind the political figure — her childhood, family influences, career, entrepreneurship, community involvement and the events that ultimately introduced her to political campaigning in Ireland. Part 2 continues Elaine's story as we move deeper into her experiences in politics, campaigning and her views on some of the biggest issues facing Ireland today. Hosted on Acast. Stephen takes us right back to the beginning — growing up in County Mayo, his early love of sport and broadcasting, and the journey that eventually led him into a career behind the microphone with Midwest Radio. We hear about the highs, the setbacks, the opportunities and the years of work that brought Stephen all the way to Croke Park on July 26, 2026, where Mayo finally ended a 75-year wait for the Sam Maguire Cup, defeating Kerry in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final.
