20 Bible Verses for Unbearable Suffering

Some suffering is bearable. Some — chronic pain, deep grief, violent trauma and abuse endured by believers around the world — feels unbearable. In this seventh episode of our series on suffering, Dave Scherrer steps back from teaching and offers something more powerful: Scripture itself. This is a "less me, more Scripture" episode — twenty hand-picked verses of solace, covering God's promises of restoration, suffering's power to produce character and hope, Christ's own suffering with and for us, and the future hope of a world with no more tears or pain. Wherever you are in your own suffering, let this list be a place to land. Visit us at https://100foldministries.org

Hearing About Suffering From the Horse's Mouth

Too often, the gospel we hand a new believer is all upside — forgiveness, joy, peace, the Holy Spirit — with none of the fine print. In this sixth episode of the suffering series, Dave Scherrer points out that Jesus never worked that way. To follow Him is to become His bond servant, bought at a terrible cost, and to expect that the world will hate you for it — there's no bait and switch. Dave walks through Jesus' own hard sayings, from the rich young ruler to "the first will be last," before reading one of C.S. Lewis's most piercing passages from The Problem of Pain: that pain is God's "megaphone to rouse a deaf world." A sobering, clarifying episode that sets up the series' next conversation — what it means to suffer well. Visit us at https://100foldministries.org

Suffering as an Instrument of God's Love

In part two of a series on the theology of suffering, Dave Scherrer asks the question underneath the question: if God is love, why does He allow suffering at all? Dave reminds us that God is in the business of redeeming "Ta Panta" — all things — to Himself, and things only need redeeming if they're broken. Suffering entered the world through sin, and Dave walks through Genesis 3:16-19 to trace how guilt, pain, toil, and death became part of the human story. But God didn't stay distant — He entered our suffering Himself in Jesus Christ, and through His death and resurrection is making a way to a world where suffering will be no more (Revelation 21:4). Dave closes with a vital distinction: Christian hope isn't wishful thinking, but a confident expectation anchored in God's unchanging love and Kingdom plan. Visit us at https://100foldministries.org

A Theology of Suffering: The Book of Job

Why does God allow suffering — and does He actually understand what we're going through? In part one of this two-part study, Dave Scherrer turns to the book of Job, widely regarded as one of the oldest books in the Bible, to explore the hidden heavenly backdrop to Job's suffering and his eventual silence before God's sovereignty. Dave shows how Job's story points us toward trusting God's Kingdom plan even without answers, then turns to Romans 8:28 for the promise that God works all things for our good. He closes with what he believes is Christianity's unique answer to the problem of evil: a God who entered our suffering Himself, and answered the question "Do you understand?" at the cross of His own Son. When Does It Become Suffering?

Dave Scherrer gets unusually personal in this episode, sharing his own long list of "things I wish were different" — years of surgeries and chronic pain, the loss of both parents and his wife's parents in one season, donating a kidney to his wife Susan, and later walking with her through a brain hemorrhage. And yet, Dave says, none of it has ever felt like suffering to him — because of perspective. He turns to the Apostle Paul's own catalog of hardships in 2 Corinthians 11, which Paul called a "momentary light affliction." Perspective is what moves our hardships from complaint to purpose, and gives us strength to persevere. Part three of a series on suffering. Visit us at https://100foldministries.org

    Joseph's Lesson for Our Suffering

Joseph's story reads like a movie — betrayal, slavery, false accusation, imprisonment — and yet Scripture keeps insisting "the Lord was with him." In part two of our series on suffering, Dave Scherrer walks through Genesis 37-50 and pulls out four things Joseph's hardest years teach us about suffering well: that God's presence never actually leaves, that hardship can be part of a bigger plan, that integrity under pressure is both protective and restorative, and that real forgiveness is possible on the other side of real pain. It all lands on one of the most quoted lines in Scripture — "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" — and a hope-filled reminder that there are Kingdom offerings waiting to be claimed in our own suffering. Suffering Is a Big Idea

Suffering isn't a pleasant subject — but Jesus talked about it often, and Dave Scherrer believes learning to suffer well is part of the secret to glorifying God. In this series opener, Dave gets our terms straight before we go any further: What is suffering, anyway? Is a stubbed toe suffering? A breakup? Ten years of chronic pain? The loss of a child? Dave wrestles honestly with where pain ends and suffering begins, landing on a working definition — suffering is pain that goes so deep it touches the whole person: mental, physical, social, and spiritual. He closes with a vital caution: be very careful measuring another person's pain, because comparison is a slippery slope toward judgmentalism. Part one of a new series. From Orphan to Heir — What Annie Teaches Us About the Kingdom | Kingdom Offerings

What if a Broadway musical tells the story of your spiritual inheritance better than you realized? In this episode, Dave Scherrer delivers on his promise from last week — a "Cracker Jack" illustration of what it means to have your status raised in the Kingdom of God. The story of Annie — moving from a miserable orphanage under a hateful housemother to the mansion of the wealthiest man on earth — is a vivid picture of what happens when God adopts us as His own. Our hard-knock life of darkness is transformed by the brightness of the Son coming up tomorrow. Dave unpacks Romans 8:17, 1 Peter 1:4, and the Greek word for "heirs" — those who receive their allotted possession by right of sonship. He makes a remarkable claim: this doctrine of co-heirship is the only theology of any mainstream religion that entertains such a concept. All the wealth the King has, all the power He wields, all the influence He carries — we inherit as our own. And here's the line that will stay with you: "As long as the King lives. And our King lives forever!" === CHAPTERS === 0:00 Introduction — The Promised "Cracker Jack" Illustration 0:30 Annie: From Orphanage to Mansion 1:15 Hard-Knock Life to the Sun Coming Up Tomorrow 2:00 Romans 8:17 — Sharing in His Sufferings and His Glory 2:45 The Only Theology That Makes You an Heir 3:30 The Greek Word for "Heirs" — By Right of Sonship 4:15 Ta Panta — Christ Inherits the Whole Cosmos 5:00 Co-Heirs: What Belongs to Jesus Belongs to Us 5:30 Head High, Chin Up — Walking Worthy 6:15 Preview: The Worthy Walk 6:30 Closing — Peace === CONNECT WITH US === Website: https://100foldministries.org Subscribe to the Newsletter: https://100foldministries.org/subscribe Email Dave: dave@100foldministries.org === SCRIPTURE REFERENCES === Romans 8:17 — We share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory 1 Peter 1:4 — An inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade, kept in heaven Psalm 2:7 — You are my Son; today I have become your Father Hebrews 1:2 — The Son has been appointed heir of all things Ephesians 1:6 — Accepted in the Beloved === ABOUT THIS PODCAST === Kingdom Offerings is the podcast of 100 Fold Ministries, where Dave Scherrer unpacks the offerings of Scripture with a special emphasis on the Gospel of the Kingdom.
