    40 Years Later: What I Was Really Longing For.

    Forty years ago, Kathie and I said "I do." But for me, this anniversary means so much more than celebrating four decades of marriage. When I was five years old, my mom dropped me off for my first day of kindergarten right here in Northfield and left to begin a new life. My world changed that day. And from a very young age, there was one thing I deeply longed for: Someday, I wanted a family. In this episode of Hope Within Reach, I share the unlikely story of how Kathie and I met, what these 40 years have meant to me, and some of the joy, mistakes, reconciliation, grief, and Hope our family has experienced along the way. This isn't a story about a perfect marriage or a perfect family. And it's not meant to measure your story against mine — whether your marriage ended, never happened, or looks nothing like you hoped. This is about looking back and seeing the faithfulness of God — even through circumstances I never would have chosen.     Ditch to Ditch

    Ditch to Ditch: The Journey That Brought Me HomeA 180-day Navy deployment around the world ended with a Red Cross message that changed everything: my dad had suffered a stroke. In 1987, while serving aboard the USS Emory S. Land, I found myself in the middle of a season that seemed to change everything at once. A tragedy next door forced Kathie and me to leave our home. A serious car accident followed. Then came an unexpected friendship with two Minnesota neighbors who, amazingly, had ties to the very same Navy ship. Not long after that, I left on a 180-day deployment around the world — “Ditch to Ditch,” through the Suez Canal and back through the Panama Canal. And near the end of that journey, a Red Cross message reached me: My dad had suffered a stroke. There I was, thousands of miles from Minnesota, trying to find out how he was doing—and wondering when I would be able to get home. This episode is about distance, friendship, faith, family, and one unforgettable moment when I finally walked into my dad’s hospital room wearing my Navy uniform.
