TBSA: the Burn Surgery and Critical Care Podcast

TBSAPod

Welcome to TBSA! This podcast arose as an idea between two docs: Luke and Jake. They have a passion for caring for burn patients, an appreciation of the unique pathophysiology of burn, and a desire to educate. During their training, they found that there were no podcasts dedicated to the care of burn victims. This podcast arose as an idea to leverage their passion and talents to help bridge this education gap to better prepare trainees to enter their burn rotations. For the person in active burn practice, this podcast will be a forum to provide up to date insights into burn care.

Episode 18: The Initial Goals of Care Conversation

Now that we have completed our walkthrough on the first 48 hours of the BICU stay, tag along with Luke and Jake as they navigate the hardest part of the ICU stay: discussing the goals of care with the patient's next of kin. We talk about how important it is to pass on a holistic view of what the patient's hospitalization will look like. Further, we discuss the necessity of involving the multidisciplinary care team early and often in order to ensure a cohesive message is presented to the patient's family. With the everchanging pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of burn patients, prophylaxis dosing can often feel like a moving target. Join us as we unpack the right drug, dose, monitoring, and timing for starting DVT prophylaxis. This issue is quite unique in burn patients.
