    Two players put $100 each on the table. First to three wins takes everything. But the game stops early with one player leading 2–1. So who gets the money? Splitting the pot based on the score feels fair—but mathematically, it isn’t. In Part 4 of the Slots & Locks History of Gambling series, Tim and Mello tackle the classic Problem of Points, a deceptively simple gambling puzzle that helped change the way humans think about uncertainty. The story takes us to France in 1654, where gambler Chevalier de Méré brought questions about wagering and chance to Blaise Pascal. Pascal then corresponded with Pierre de Fermat, and together their approaches—enumerating possible outcomes and reasoning backward from future results—helped lay the foundation for modern mathematical probability. The breakthrough was surprisingly simple: when an unfinished game is interrupted, the fair split shouldn’t be based on what has already happened. It should be based on each player’s probability of winning from that point forward. That shift—from looking backward at results to looking forward at possible outcomes—eventually helped create the language of expected value, house edge, risk, return, and mathematical expectation. And those ideas didn’t stay in gambling. They spread into insurance, finance, statistics, medicine, weather forecasting, engineering, sports analytics, polling, prediction markets, and artificial intelligence. Along the way, Tim and Mello look at why gambling became such a useful laboratory for uncertainty, why our instincts about streaks and “fairness” are often wrong, and why probability doesn’t care whether something feels likely.
