"Live Free or Die" | Deuteronomy 30:15-20 | Guest Preacher: Patrick Seamars | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on December 28, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by guest preacher Patrick Seamars. In Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Moses places God’s people at a decisive crossroads: life and death, blessing and curse. The passage isn't presenting a neutral spiritual space, but a clear call to covenant faithfulness. Life with God is portrayed as the result of loving Him, walking in His ways, and holding fast to His word. The sermon begins by connecting this ancient choice to modern assumptions about freedom. While cultural slogans like “Live Free or Die” emphasize autonomy and self-determination, Scripture reveals that true freedom is found not in independence from God, but in joyful dependence upon Him. Every person is already moving toward one of two paths, and even passivity is itself a form of decision. As the text unfolds, the danger of divided loyalty becomes clear. Turning away from the Lord doesn't usually happen in a single moment, but through gradual drift — where lesser loves slowly take His place. Idolatry often appears in ordinary forms — comfort, success, control, politics, pleasure, or self-reliance — yet each ultimately demands allegiance and shapes the direction of the heart. The call of Moses is therefore both urgent and gracious: choose life by turning to the Lord. Obedience isn't presented as a means of earning salvation, but as the pathway of covenant life for those who belong to God. In Christ, this call finds its deepest fulfillment, as Jesus Himself becomes the true life-giver who calls His people to abide in Him. The sermon closes with practical exhortation toward faithful discipleship: daily engagement with Scripture, commitment to the local church, and vigilance against spiritual drift. True life is not found in independence from God, but in enduring communion with Him through Jesus Christ. Whether you are wrestling with temptation, spiritual apathy, or competing loyalties, Deuteronomy 30 calls us to examine what we are ultimately serving — and to choose life in the Lord. "The Promise Arrived in Swaddling Cloths" | Luke 2:8-14 | Advent 2025 | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on December 21, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. In Luke 2:8-14, the birth of Jesus is announced not in a palace or before religious elites, but to shepherds watching their flocks in the dark. Advent confronts our assumptions about where God’s glory is revealed. The first witnesses to the incarnation are ordinary, overlooked people — those the world tends to ignore but whom God chooses to draw near. The angel’s announcement of “good news of great joy” reveals that the coming of Christ isn't merely sentimental comfort — but divine intervention for a fallen world. The Savior is born not into luxury but into humility, wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in a manger. From the beginning, the incarnation carries the shape of the cross. Jesus is not only born as King, but as the One who has come to save His people through sacrifice. The sign given to the shepherds — a baby in swaddling cloths — points to both His humanity and His mission. The humility of the manger anticipates the humility of the cross, where Christ will lay down His life for sinners and break the power of sin and death. The angels’ proclamation of “peace on earth” isn't a vague feeling of goodwill, but the announcement of reconciliation between God and sinners through Jesus Christ. Luke 2 reminds us that Christmas isn't simply a celebration of Jesus’ birth, but the unveiling of God’s plan of redemption. The One born in Bethlehem is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, bringing true peace to all who trust in Him. Whether you are weary, anxious, or longing for hope, the birth of Christ declares that God has drawn near in grace and that salvation has come in the person of Jesus. "The Promise Fulfilled – Surprised by Joy" | Luke 1:26-38 | Advent 2025 | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on December 14, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. In Luke 1:26-38, the announcement of Jesus’ birth comes not as a distant theological idea, but as the fulfillment of a promise that has been unfolding since the beginning of Scripture. Advent draws our attention to the long wait of God’s people — through Abraham and Sarah’s impossible circumstances, through Israel’s repeated failure and longing, and through the promise given to David of an everlasting kingdom. The waiting is not in vain — it's filled with God’s steady faithfulness across generations. When the angel Gabriel appears to Mary in Nazareth, the story reaches a decisive moment. The promised Savior isn't arriving through human strength or political power, but through divine grace. Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit, named “Jesus” because He will save His people from their sins, and declared to be the fulfillment of the covenant hope given to David — a King whose reign will never end. Mary’s response is striking not because she is extraordinary by the world’s standards, but because she is ordinary. Her willingness to believe God’s word, even in confusion and uncertainty, reveals the nature of true faith: trusting God’s promise when the outcome is beyond human explanation or control. Her honest question isn't unbelief, but the beginning of obedient faith shaped by grace. Advent, therefore, isn't only about anticipation — but about fulfillment. In Christ, God keeps every promise He has spoken. The longings of the human heart, the history of Israel, and the hope of the covenants all converge in Jesus — the Son of David, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world. Whether you are wrestling with waiting, uncertainty, or weakness, Luke 1 reminds us that God’s promises are not delayed or forgotten. They are fulfilled in Christ with perfect wisdom and perfect timing. "The Promise Preserved" | Genesis 12:1-3; 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Isaiah 9:2-7 | Advent 2025 | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on December 7, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. Advent reminds us that waiting is the unfolding of God’s faithfulness. In Genesis 12:1-3, 2 Samuel 7:12-16, and Isaiah 9:2-7, Scripture traces a single promise through centuries of uncertainty, failure, exile, and hope. At every stage, God isn't improvising history — He's faithfully preserving His redemptive plan. The promise begins with Abraham, where God calls one man and promises to bless all nations through his offspring. Despite human weakness, delay, and barrenness, God demonstrates that His promises do not depend on human strength but on His covenant faithfulness. What seems impossible becomes the stage for God’s power to bring life where there was none. The storyline continues with David, where God promises an everlasting kingdom and an enduring throne. Even through human sin, political instability, and the unraveling of Israel’s monarchy, God assures His people that His covenant will not fail. The hope of a righteous and eternal King becomes central to Israel’s expectation. That hope seems to fade in exile, when judgment falls and the kingdom collapses. Yet it is precisely there that Isaiah speaks with clarity and light: a child will be born, a son will be given, and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. In Jesus Christ, the promises made to Abraham and David find their fulfillment and preservation. Advent, then, isn't merely anticipation — it's confidence in a God who keeps His word across generations. Jesus is the promised Seed, the rightful Son of David, and the eternal King whose Kingdom cannot fail. In Him, every promise of God finds its “Yes” and “Amen.” Whether you are in a season of waiting, uncertainty, or discouragement, this passage reminds us that God's promises aren't fragile. They are preserved, fulfilled, and secured in Christ alone. "The Promise in the Garden: Hope from the Beginning" | Genesis 3:1-15 | Advent 2025 | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on November 30, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. Why does Christmas matter? The answer begins long before Bethlehem. In Genesis 3:1-15, immediately after humanity's fall into sin, God makes a promise that echoes throughout the entire Bible: a coming Deliverer will crush the serpent and bring redemption to His people. What appears at first to be a story of rebellion and judgment becomes the opening chapter of God's plan to save sinners through Jesus Christ. Advent invites us to remember both the brokenness of our world and the hope found in God's promises. The fall explains why suffering, fear, death, and sin continue to shape human experience. It reveals humanity's desperate need for rescue and our inability to save ourselves. Yet even in the midst of judgment, God speaks words of grace. The promise of the woman's offspring points forward to the Messiah who would come to defeat Satan, conquer sin, and restore what was lost. From Eden to Bethlehem, Scripture tells one unified story of redemption. Jesus Christ is the promised Seed, the second Adam, and the Savior for whom God's people waited. His birth is not merely the beginning of a new story but the fulfillment of a promise made at the dawn of human history. Through His sinless life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection, Christ accomplishes the redemption that Genesis 3 anticipated. Advent is therefore more than a season of nostalgia or holiday tradition. It's a celebration of God's faithfulness and an invitation to place our hope in the One who has already secured victory over sin and death. Because Christ has come, believers can face a fallen world with confidence, knowing that God's promises never fail and that the final victory belongs to Him. Whether you are walking through joy, sorrow, uncertainty, or longing, Genesis 3 reminds us that the hope of Christmas begins with God's promise and culminates in Jesus Christ. "Extravagant Worship and Petty Betrayal" | Mark 14:1-11 | The Gospel of Mark Series | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on November 30, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. What is Jesus worth to you? Mark 14:1-11 confronts that question through two radically different responses to Christ. As the shadow of the cross draws near, some are calculating His value in silver while another offers Him extravagant devotion. The religious leaders are determined to eliminate Jesus, carefully plotting how to remove Him without provoking the crowds. Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, joins their plans and begins looking for an opportunity to betray his Master. Their actions reveal a sobering reality: it is possible to be near Jesus, familiar with His teaching, and yet remain untouched by genuine love for Him. In striking contrast, a woman in Bethany enters with an alabaster jar of costly perfume and pours it upon Jesus. What many around her view as waste, Jesus calls beautiful. Her act of worship is marked by sacrifice, devotion, and faith. While others fail to grasp what is happening, she recognizes the significance of the moment and honors Christ with something precious. Her example challenges every believer to consider whether Christ truly occupies the highest place in our hearts. The passage also points beyond the woman herself to the Gospel. Her lavish offering foreshadows the even greater sacrifice that Jesus is about to make. While she pours out costly perfume, Christ is preparing to pour out His life for sinners. The value of her worship is ultimately rooted in the infinite worth of the One she worships. Mark 14 invites us to examine our own response to Jesus. Will we treat Him as useful only when convenient, or will we recognize His surpassing worth and gladly surrender everything to Him? True worship isn't measured by appearances but by hearts that treasure Christ above all else. "Not One Stone Upon Another: The End of an Era" | Mark 13:1-37 | The Gospel of Mark Series | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on November 16, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. Can Jesus be trusted when the world around us feels unstable? In Mark 13:1-37, Jesus delivers one of His most challenging and often misunderstood teachings, not to encourage speculation about the future, but to strengthen the faith of His disciples. Standing before the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, Jesus makes a shocking prediction: not one stone will be left upon another. What seemed permanent and untouchable would soon be swept away under God's judgment. For the disciples, this raised urgent questions about the future. For Jesus, it became an opportunity to prepare His followers for the trials, persecution, deception, and upheaval that would accompany the end of an era. Throughout the Olivet Discourse, Jesus warns against false messiahs, fear-driven reactions, and misplaced confidence in earthly institutions. His concern isn't that His people learn to decode every headline, but that they remain faithful when circumstances become difficult. The destruction of Jerusalem would prove that Christ's words never fail, even when His predictions seem impossible at the time they are spoken. At the heart of the passage is a profound encouragement: the same Jesus who accurately foretold judgment also promises to preserve His people. His sovereignty extends over nations, history, suffering, and the future itself. Because His words are trustworthy, Christians can face uncertainty without panic and hardship without despair. The chapter concludes with a simple but urgent command: stay awake. Faithful disciples are not called to speculation, but to watchfulness, perseverance, and obedience. In every generation, believers are called to trust Christ, remain steadfast, and continue the work He has given them until He comes. Whether you are wrestling with questions about prophecy, concerned about the future, or seeking confidence in uncertain times, Mark 13 points us to the One whose promises never fail and whose Kingdom cannot be shaken. "Give Back to God What is God’s" | Mark 12:13-44 | The Gospel of Mark Series | Hillside Baptist Church

Preached on November 9, 2025 at Hillside Baptist Church in Pembroke, New Hampshire by Alex Musard. What does God actually require from us? In Mark 12:13-44, Jesus answers that question by exposing misplaced allegiances and calling His followers to wholehearted devotion. Through a series of challenges from religious leaders, He reveals that faithfulness isn't merely about religious activity, political opinions, or outward obedience — it's about belonging entirely to God. The confrontation begins with a question about taxes and Caesar, but Jesus quickly moves beyond politics to something far deeper. If a coin belongs to Caesar because it bears his image, what does it mean that human beings bear the image of God? His words challenge us to consider not merely what we should give God, but whether we recognize that our lives already belong to Him. As the chapter unfolds, Jesus continues exposing shallow religion and calling people to deeper faith. He defends the reality of the Resurrection against the skepticism of the Sadducees, demonstrates the authority of Scripture, and points His listeners to the living God who reigns over both life and death. In a world often consumed with the temporary, Christ directs our attention to eternal realities. Jesus then summarizes God's law with breathtaking simplicity: love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. This isn't a call to external rule-keeping but to a life transformed by genuine love for God. True obedience flows from a heart captured by the greatness and goodness of the Lord. The chapter concludes with the striking contrast between self-promoting religious leaders and a poor widow who quietly gives all she has. While others seek recognition, she demonstrates a faith marked by trust, sacrifice, and wholehearted devotion. Her example reminds us that God measures faithfulness differently than the world does. Mark 12 invites us to examine where our allegiance truly lies. Everything we have and everything we are ultimately belongs to God. The question is whether we will hold those gifts tightly or joyfully render them back to the One whose image we bear.
