In this episode of The Harlequin Room, I tried initially to talk about self-discovery, impostor syndrome, and ego. Ironically, or maybe it’s direct causation, I’ve realised the inauthenticity of the format that permeates previous episodes. Therefore, and from here on out, I’ve decided to speak more candidly about my personal experience with the subject matter and am going to be attempting to be less didactic, leaning more into the open-diary aspect. Recently (read May; it is now August, but circumstances out of my control had gotten in the way of me first recording and then editing this episode), I’ve been mulling over the distinction between self-discovery and narcissism. In an honest attempt to embody humility, I think from time to time we can accidentally fall into self-deprecation. Or at least we want to distance ourselves from being perceived negatively as narcissistic, even by ourselves, which, while admirable, can (and this is ironic) lead to a lack of self-analysis. Here I try to look at how identity, confidence, ego, and self-doubt affect creative careers, ambition, and the misperception that everyone else knows what they’re doing. This episode covers: * Why self-discovery and narcissism can look similar, but lead in different directions * Discusses our supposedly “toxic” selves * Why you are not an imposter but merely a beginner who thinks they should already be an expert * The difference between performing confidence and building competence * Why the point of understanding yourself is eventually to look beyond yourself This isn’t a hustle sermon; it’s a reflective, comedic, coffee-table conversation This episode is for: - Creatives who feel lost, late, or quietly ambitious. - Artists balancing their identity with day jobs, expectations, and creative careers - Anyone dealing with impostor syndrome, self-doubt, anxiety, or confidence issues - People trying to grow without turning their entire existence into a self-improvement project The episode also includes: HR Breakdown: “Would you rather contribute to something vast like the pyramids you may never see finished, or create something smaller but beautiful, like a fountain or a sculpture in a quiet square, that you could complete yourself?” Monthly Recommendation * Book / Essay / Podcast: “How Eastern Wisdom & Neuroscience Unite to Unlock human potential | Dr. K” * Healthy GamerGG - Dr. K. is an interesting individual who is trying to unite eastern and western practices, both spiritual and medicinal/scientific.
