Black Box Theory

Opening once locked doors and sharing a map to the maze. We're Malcolm and Thomas, two engineers who got into the room at one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Pretty quickly we figured out that nobody hands you the manual once you're inside. Black Box Theory is us working it out loud. Every week we get into what's actually going on, and we talk about it the way we would anyway: honestly, with receipts, and without pretending we have it all figured out. Some weeks that's a trillion-dollar IPO and what it really means for your money. Some weeks it's a Supreme Court ruling, a story taking over the timeline, or where the NBA is headed. Usually it's a mix of all of it, plus whatever we couldn't stop going back and forth about that week. The point is always the same. We want to understand how this stuff really works: who's winning, who's paying for it, and what you can do with that once you can see it. We're not financial advisors and we're not career coaches. We're two people a few years into figuring it out, sharing what we've learned and what we're still learning. If you're early in your career and tired of watching other people win without understanding why, you'll feel at home here. New episodes every week. What It Actually Takes to Build a Startup in College

The pitch deck makes it look clean. The build is anything but. In this clip, Jayson gets into the messy reality of getting Rooted off the ground. Jayson Johnson breaks down what it really took to develop Rooted, a campus live platform — including the part nobody warns you about: negotiating with a university and working through the bureaucracy to get something built on campus. He also gets into the co-founder side of it, how they collaborated and divided the work, and why who you build with matters as much as what you're building. If you've ever wanted to start something in college, this is the honest version. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Introduction to Rooted 00:30 — Challenges of Building Rooted 01:25 — Co-founder Collaboration 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Building a campus platform means navigating real university bureaucracy and negotiation • Co-founder collaboration and a clear division of work can make or break the build • The real startup story is messier — and more instructive — than the highlight reel — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. The next frontier isn't just being explored — it's being claimed. And the rules being written now will decide who gets a seat. In this clip, Jayson gets into it. Jayson Johnson shares his interest in space policy and why equitable space exploration matters — who gets access, who writes the rules, and how we avoid repeating old patterns of who gets left out. He also opens up about his aspirations for entrepreneurship and consulting in the space industry, and what it looks like to build a career at the intersection of engineering, business, and the future of space. It's a big-picture conversation about ambition, access, and the world we're building beyond this one. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Interest in Space Policy 01:04 — Equitable Space Exploration 02:07 — Aspirations for Entrepreneurship and Consulting 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Space policy will shape who actually gets access to the next frontier • Equitable space exploration means not repeating old patterns of who gets left out • There's real opportunity at the intersection of engineering, entrepreneurship, and space — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Beating Imposter Syndrome When Nobody Looks Like You

You finally get in the room — and then a voice says you don't belong there. In this clip, Jayson gets honest about that feeling and how he flipped it. Jayson Johnson shares his experience at a conference where imposter syndrome crept in, and how he turned it into fuel by seeing himself as a representative of his HBCU. He talks about what it's really like to compete and stand out in spaces where almost nobody looks like you — the pressure, the doubt, and the motivation that comes from knowing you're not just there for yourself. If you've ever felt like the only one in the room, this one will hit. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Imposter Syndrome and Representation 01:23 — Competing and Standing Out 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Imposter syndrome is common in underrepresented spaces — and it can be reframed as motivation • Representing where you come from can turn pressure into purpose • Standing out when nobody looks like you is hard, but you're rarely there for just yourself — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Every other post says AI is going to change everything. So is it real, or is it noise? In this clip we cut through it. They share their own personal experiences actually using AI, how it's showing up across different fields, and what it all means for the job market. The throughline: the hype is real enough that ignoring it is a mistake, and understanding and adapting to the technology is quickly becoming the difference between staying relevant and getting left behind. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Impact of AI Hype 00:49 — Personal Experiences with AI 01:37 — Applications of AI in Different Fields 03:19 — Implications for the Job Market 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • The AI hype is real enough that ignoring it is a real risk • AI is already showing up across fields in practical, everyday ways • Understanding and adapting to AI is becoming essential to stay relevant at work — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. What People Get Wrong About Black Greek Life

Scroll TikTok and you'd think Greek life is all strolls and probates. That's the highlight reel — not the whole story. In this clip we set the record straight. The conversation gets into the misconceptions and stereotypes around Greek organizations — including Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi — and how social media, TikTok especially, tends to spotlight one narrow slice of the culture while missing everything underneath it. They talk about the service, the scholarship, the networks, and the decades of impact that never trend, and why the broader contributions of these organizations deserve more than a viral clip's worth of attention. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Misconceptions and Stereotypes 01:20 — Impact of TikTok on Greek Life 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Social media often flattens Greek life into a stereotype and misses the depth • Organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi carry a long legacy of service and impact • The full story of these organizations goes far beyond what goes viral — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Jayson Johnson talks through expanding the team behind Rooted, including bringing on interns and friends from Howard University to help build it out. Then he shares what it's actually like to be a Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford — the access, the network, and the real benefits of a program built to develop leaders who want to make an impact. Grad School or Industry? How to Actually Decide

Two more years of school, or two years of paychecks? For a lot of engineers, this is the fork in the road — and there's no universal right answer. In this clip we break it down. Malcolm, Thomas, and guest Jayson Johnson get into the real decision between pursuing a graduate degree in engineering or heading straight into industry. They talk through the personal preferences and goals that should drive the call, the financial side that people love to skip, and how the current job market tips the scales one way or the other. Jayson took the grad-school route to Stanford — but they're honest that it's not the move for everyone. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Grad School vs. Industry 01:18 — Personal Preferences and Goals 02:22 — Financial Considerations 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • There's no one right answer — personal goals should drive the decision • The financial math (and debt) deserves as much weight as the prestige • The current job market can tilt the grad-school-vs-industry call either way — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Why Representation in Tech Actually Matters

You can't be what you can't see — and in tech, a lot of talented people never get shown the door, let alone how to open it. In this clip, Malcolm gets into fixing that. Malcolm breaks down why bridging the gap and creating real accessibility for underrepresented people in tech isn't optional — it's the whole point. He talks about the guidance and inspiration HBCU students and first-timers need to actually break into the field, and why representation and mentorship do more than check a box: they show people a path they didn't know existed. It's a reminder that getting in the room means nothing if you don't reach back and pull the next person in. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Bridging the Gap 01:20 — Creating Accessibility 02:44 — Importance of Mentorship 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Representation shows people a path they might never have seen otherwise • Accessibility and guidance are what actually get underrepresented students into tech • Mentorship turns "getting in the room" into pulling the next person in — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map.
